Canon 600EX II-RT overview

  • 1Description

Do wireless flash the right way by picking up this Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT Essential Wireless Two Flash Kit from B&H. It features two flagship Speedlite 600EX II-RT flashes, which are equipped natively with 2.4 GHz radio systems, along with the ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter, which provides excellent control over the flashes when they are off camera. This setup supports Canon's E-TTL / E-TTL II metering system.

  • 2 x Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT

Complete with built-in radio transmission wireless functionality, the Speedlite 600EX II-RT sits at the top of Canon's on-camera E-TTL / E-TTL II compatible flash lineup with a powerful guide number of 197' at ISO 100 and 200mm. This revision improves continuous flash performance by 1.1-1.5x, or up to 2.0x with optional battery pack, simplifies the menu system for faster operation, and includes a specially designed bounce adapter, a hard color filter, and an updated soft case. The two-way 2.4 GHz radio system provides added reliability and a range up to 98.4' among up to 5 groups with a total of 15 individual Speedlites. This system also does not need direct line-of-site like traditional optical-based transmission and will work through obstacles.

For added coverage and functionality, the flash's zoom head can reach from 20-200mm, with the option for wide 14mm coverage when the built-in diffusion panel is used. Also, the unit can tilt from -7 to +90° and rotate 180° either left or right for complete bounce capabilities. On the back of the 600EX II-RT is a backlit dot-matrix LCD panel that displays the status and allows users to easily access and change settings. Additionally, the flash is durable with a redesigned contact construction and improved dust and water resistant sealing.

Other capabilities of the 600EX II-RT include a stroboscopic mode as well as high-speed, first and second curtain sync settings for more control over your image's final look. The flash is powered by 4 AA batteries and has a port for an optional external power pack. The rated recycle time is 0.1-5.5 seconds, but can be sped up to 0.1-3.3 seconds in Quick Flash mode. It comes with a bounce adapter, a hard CTO filter set, a mini stand, and an updated soft case that holds the flash and accessories.

  • Canon ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter

The Canon ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter can help you take full advantage of all the features on Canon's Speedlite 600EX-RT and 430EX III-RT flashes. The ST-E3-RT makes complex lighting setups simple by facilitating radio-controlled, two-way wireless transmission up to 98.4' away, among up to five groups or fifteen individual Speedlites. It has controls similar to the Speedlite 600EX-RT, including multiple flash metering options, and a variety of flash modes. Compact design with highly reliable construction combined with a clearly laid-out information panel and buttons with back lighting make this an indispensible tool for advanced professional flash photography. The ST-E3-RT represents the next generation in wireless flash systems.

Note: Because it does not have an optical transmission function, the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT is not compatible with earlier Speedlite models such as 580EX II.

Canon 600EX II-RT reviews

Speedlite 600EX II-RT Essential Wireless Two Flash Kit is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Vast improvement over 580EX + PocketWizard I purchased this to replace a combination of 580EX II's and PocketWizards. The new 600's work great! You turn them and the transmitter on, and they fussing around. Also, no more bags, shields, and all the other hoops you have to jump through to get the PW's to work consistently with the 580's. These have helped to simplify my travel bag and I have one less thing to fuss with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful, reliable lightweight kit with consistent lighting. I upgraded from a non Canon brand that was not made well and was unreliable. I use the lights in umbrellas for fine art and documentary portraits. The flashes recycle quickly. I am able to get ratios easily. The flashes and the transmitter are consistent and powerful for their size and weight. They make it easier for me to carry to locations as they are much smaller and lighter than studio lights that I used to ease. I am able to use lighter light stands and easily get everything as a carry on on an airplane. Canon technical support is also a plus when buying their equipment. I could not figure something out and called them and they clearly communicated what to do with a flash that resolved the problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon superb quality as always. Bravo Canon. Incredible portable lights and radio transmitter. Ran into some delays on Auto Chanel. Best to scan and assign a specific Chanel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use right from the box I took these lights and the wireless remote straight out of the box to take Senior High pictures of my niece. The shoot was in Oregon where most shoot locations were in dark locations and/or had dark backgrounds. I used one flash on a stand behind the subject, and the other to add front lighting, and the remote unit on the top of my Canon 7D MarkII worked every time. The backlight helped separate the subject's dark hair from the forest backgrounds and add color and light to the setting, and the other light was hand-held. Everyone was pleased with the out-of-camera images. The only issue to point out is that the instructions for the remote control unit came only in the Japanese language so I wasn't able to take full advantage of that lighting change control given I only had a couple of hours to try to figure it out on my own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOrks great! Just used the kit to take portraits of the cast of a musical. I used it with soft boxes. The speadlitesrespond every time. No more misfires that I used to get from a 3rd party speedlite kit. one of the advantages of using the canon kit is that you can control all the flashed directly from the back screen of the camera and since mine is a touch screen it is so easy to dial in the power and the zoom of every speedlite.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice kit if reliability matters Before buying this or any other flash system you should give careful consideration to what your expectations and requirements are relative to your budget. This is not an inexpensive kit and there are many other options available that may work well enough for you without breaking the bank. I have a set of radio triggers I've been very pleased with and have used with a pair of Canon 550EX speedlites to add radio triggering to those older IR wireless system units. For the most part, the radio triggers have served me well and allowed me to delve into off camera flash with no restrictions on placement of the remote speedlites due to the IR system limitations. The two 550EX speedlites themselves have been work horses, especially considering I bought both of them years ago used for around $250 each and they still work well and look good. In a time when throw-away products are all too common I appreciate those that hold up over time and have proven reliability. When initial cost is spread over years of use it translates to real value. I wanted to have speedlites with built-in radio triggers when I decided to upgrade those 550EX speedlites after buying a 5D MK4. Since the manufacturer of the existing radio triggers also offers alternatives to the Canon 600Ex II-RT at a considerably lower cost I looked into them and gave them serious consideration. More than a few people were having problems with certain aspects of the build quality, inconsistent flash exposure, batteries going dead when the units were supposedly shut off, zoom head getting stuck, etc. I shoot weddings and reliability is critical. If reliability isn't a major part of your decision making then you may be happy with the cheaper alternatives to this kit, but for me there were too many risks involved to take chances with. I don't know if I will come to regard these as highly as I do the old 550EX speedlites but they were the best choice for me at the time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the wireless feature I sold my old RF flash to buy the radio. I used it for a friends retirement part and placed the flash on either side of the room. No setup required. Turn on the flash and the wireless function and it just works. I sold my radio triggers as well because it wasn't reliable 90% of the time. Great deal thank you B&H for the fast delivery. It all came together.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Emphasis on essential. Canon has a great flash unit here! And this package is absolutely wonderful. Two flashes controlled wirelessly, simply. You dont't need to be a rocket scientist to operate the system either. The transmitter is set up like the flash units so the faces are familiar and intuitive. Love it!
