Genaray Contender overview

  • 1Description

The Genaray Contender LED Focusing Spot Light is a compact, daylight-balanced light fixture that features dense-matrix LEDs with an output of 5400 lux and a CRI greater than 95. Featuring an adjustable light beam, the Contender offers 25 to 55° beam focusing. It's also dimmable from 100 to 10% brightness. An LCD screen displays your current settings. Ideal for location and event lighting, the Contender has a 100-240 VAC power adapter for worldwide use but can also provide about 3 hours and 45 minutes run time with the included battery module and two L-series batteries.

Removable barndoors provide control over the light spill, allowing you to control and shape the light. The provided tungsten filter converts the output to 3200K and an included filter holder enables using your choice of diffusion or gels with the fixture. The Contender ships with a ball head mount and a carrying case.

Modular Design
A removable module holds two L-series batteries and is easy to attach. The fixture requires two L-series batteries to generate the necessary voltage to function.
Adjustable Beam Angle
The adjustable focus mechanism provides a beam angle from a 25° spot to a 55° flood. This makes it ideal for faces as well as backgrounds.
Flicker-Free
The Contender's LED array emits a constant flicker-free beam that's perfect for shooting video in slow motion. It eliminates the strobing effect commonly seen in videos that are shot without flicker-free lights.

    Genaray Contender reviews

Contender LED Focusing Spot Light with Battery Module Kit (Daylight) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid all-around I had already switched most of my video lighting over to LEDs, the one thing missing was a bright spotlight for those times when you need something really hard and directional. This Contender LED from Genaray definitely does the trick. It's bright, solidly built, and easily adjustable. Works off of a power supply or the two big batteries it comes with. Also comes with a convenient carrying case. The light is bright enough that you'll definitely want to use some diffusion (not included) if you're using it directly on talent and don't want to blind them. Something else to know is that the light has a relatively quiet but still audible fan noise that can be picked up by mics if it's too close. And finally, it's very compact and lightweight, which makes it another good addition to my mobile kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Compact Constant Light Source I come from using speedlites for portability and wanted to add a constant light source to my kit. The contender fit the bill for me. Small, well constructed, and packaged in a nifty case for ease of said portability. It's a breeze to use right out of the box. Flip it on and adjust output from 10% to 100%. Comes with a ballhead and gels and runs on battery or plug it in to a power source. I used it for a spot of background light and also as a key light. Some pics are attached of both uses. Wanted to show set up but 2 image limit, so... As a key light power was at 20%. It was placed camera right and a little behind the subject. You don't want someone looking directly into this thing. A reflector was just left of the subject for fill. I'm looking forward to playing with gels and more dramatic use as a key light. Very pleased so far...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great addition to my kit This has been a great addition to my kit. The light has a broad range of power, and I love that it is LED so I do not have to worry about the lights temperature. I love the easy to use gels it comes with and the collapsable barn doors. The carrying case it comes with makes it easy to store and transport as well. I am very happy with this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing Light for size and flexibility Recently purchased a single light package (does come in a kit of 3 lights as well) - and have used only on one paying photo session both indoors and outdoors at night. I purchased as replacement to my travel strobe so I can use in Europe on the streets. When evaluating this product - I will split my comments in 'Quality of light' and 'Quality of produce'. Quality of Light: Pros - Strong even light, daylight balanced, flicker free and equivalent to about a conventional 300w bulb at full power. Comes with an very well designed travel case, well padded - and with a bit of redistributing of parts can hold 2 extra batteries. Cons - Color Balance is not variable or even changeable and the narrowest spot, still seems a bit to large, it would be nice to narrow down more. Quality of Produce Pros - Metal construction, light weight, compact size, no heat generated, excellent dimmer control from 10%to 100% (click stopped). Runs off batteries! Cons - Has fan, which is very quite, but might be an issue in film with sound recording during extremely quite scenes. Color Temperature is fixed - tangents achieved by filter (supplied), would have to make costume filters for anything between 5,500 and 3,000. Barn doors are plastic!, might not hold up if heavily used on location - and only rotate about 90 degrees. The barn door assembly also holds the Warming filter - with filter in, barn doors to not rotate. The clip for holding on the barn doors is weakest link in whole product, look very vulnerable to breakage (poor design). With batteries installed, the centre of gravity shifts and might be prone to tipping on smaller stands. Recommendation - definitely!, this is an amazing little light and is great for those shooters that travel - really packs a bunch for the dollar value. Removed one star only for plastic barn door and clip design.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wanted to love it, but end up returning it I've been looking for the perfect Fresnel light, that has great light quality (high CRI), is reliable, battery operable and light enough that I can travel with. This light almost came to be the perfect light and at the rebated B&H price, it was a lot of value for the money, but ultimately it fell short for my needs. Pros: (well made, bright, great value) - Well made. The shell is metal constructed (with some plastic for the focusing ring) and combined with the inner heat sink, it has a very solid-built feel to it. - Great value, there is almost nothing in the market that comes close to the price/value of this light (I bought it when it was rebated). Ability to focus from flood to spot (this is where it fell short for me). - Bright. This light is using over 50 watts of power so it's bright. Battery and AC power operable. You can plug this light to the wall or power it from the provided two batteries, it's very versatile. cons: (noisy fan, heavy for travel, limited spot range) - Fan noise. The heat sink has a fan and you can hear the fan indoor. I turned this light on when I got it, and instantly got bummed out with the fan noise. I Put a Sanken lav mic on and I could hear the fan noise. (this is one of the reasons I returned it). Now, if you're putting this far from your talent (more than 6-8 feet), the noise might not be an issue. Just be mindful it's there, especially if the room echos. - Limited spot focusing. This lens can only do 25 degree of spot. That seems limiting. There are even many LED panels that can do 25 degree. Granted they're not a single source light so they're harder to control. However, having the spot option gives your light more reach. In case you want to place it farther or do other stuff with it. I wish it would go to 15 degree (closer to Apurtures 20s that do 17) or even 20. But 25 degree of spot makes this not as powerful and flexible. Basically you put this to 25 degree spot put a blue gel on it and then place it next to the Luxi Viola with a blue color dialed in shine both on a wall and at best, this light might be 1/2 or 1 stop brighter. Which is not that much given how much heaver it is. - Weight. This light is well made. But it's on the heavier side. Not super heavy, but if you are like me, looking for something you can travel with (take on a flight), without paying a lot of extra luggage fees, this light kind of limits you. You can take this light, but leave something else behind. So it makes this light a bit unpractical. - Lastly, I think this light is a bit over engineered. There is a battery module that detaches and attaches from the middle. They engineered this pipe fitting (nicely manufactured) that you can remove and the put back in the middle. It adds an unnecessary level of complexity to the product that makes it bulkier, a bit heavier and more prone to malfunction and failure. One more thing, in the photos, there is a CTB gel. But this kit only comes with a CTO gel. Again, you do get two batteries, charger, a ball head and a nice case. All in all a great value, but with a few key shortcomings.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Noisy I like everything about this except the fan noise has been audible every time I've tried to use it with audio recording. So it creates a headache for sound and thus i've avoided using it at all costs. I didn't realize it until outside my 30 day return window so now i'm stuck with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2 thumbs up I needed a small, focusable LED fresnel to be able to add patterns to backgrounds on interviews. Works great. I bought 2.
