i would say the padding is about half an inch thick, but not present on the panel with the zip (which includes the ends). it will wear out on the ends eventually, i bought this one to replace a similar stand bag. it's decent protection, good for stands and even a tripod going in the back of your vehicle. but it isn't a tripod travel case, which should be rigid if it's going to be put in someone else's hands.
