FUJIFILM X-T20 overview

  • 1Description

Blending a familiar form factor with a heightened feature-set, the silver X-T20 from FUJIFILM is a sleek mirrorless camera designed for multimedia shooters. Utilizing a 24.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS III sensor and X-Processor Pro image processor, high-resolution stills can be recorded with notable sharpness and clarity due to the sensor's organic layout and omission of an optical low-pass filter. The sensor and processor combination also avails an extended sensitivity range to ISO 51200, a 14 fps continuous shooting rate when working with the electronic shutter, and the ability to record UHD 4K or Full HD 1080p video. When working with moving subjects, continuous autofocus performance has been optimized for improved moving subject tracking and overall accuracy, and Advanced SR Auto mode can also be used for fully automated shooting with intelligent scene recognition. Additionally, the retro-inspired camera body design incorporates a tilting 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD as well as a 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder, and physical dials are available for quickly and intuitively adjusting exposure and shooting settings.

24.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS III Sensor
Utilizing FUJIFILM's unique, randomized pixel array, the 24.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS III sensor affords a high degree of image quality and sharpness due to the omission of an optical low-pass filter. Versus conventional pixel patterns, the X-Trans design more closely mimics the organic nature of film in order to produce nuanced colors and smooth tonal transitions, while also reducing moiré and aliasing.
X-Processor Pro
Aside from benefitting the low-light performance with an expandable sensitivity range to ISO 51200, the X-Processor Pro also contributes to fast performance throughout the camera system, including a start-up time of 0.4 seconds, shutter lag time of 0.05 seconds, shooting interval time of 0.25 seconds, and a continuous shoot rate of 14 fps when working with an electronic shutter, or 8 fps with a mechanical shutter.
UHD 4K and Full HD Video
Accessible via the drive dial on the top plate, the X-T20 supports both recording in both UHD 4K/30p and Full HD 1080/60p resolutions. Film Simulation modes can be used during recording to give a distinct look to footage, and video can also be output via HDMI to an external recorder or monitor, and a mic jack is featured for working with an external microphone.
Body Design
  • The rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD touchscreen allows for intuitive operation, focus point selection, and menu navigation, and its tilting design benefits working from high and low angles.
  • High-resolution 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder allows for bright, clear eye-level monitoring with a frame rate of 54.54 fps for smooth monitoring in a range of lighting conditions.
  • Dedicated shutter speed, drive mode, and exposure compensation dials for direct, intuitive control over exposure and shooting settings.
  • The physical exposure compensation dial now features a C position to permit an expanded +/- 5 EV range when working with the control dials.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi allows for direct wireless sharing of files as well as remote camera control from a linked mobile device.
  • Built-in pop-up flash is available for additional illumination, and a hot shoe is featured for working with an optional external flash.
91-Point Autofocus System
Utilizing both contrast- and phase-detection methods, the hybrid autofocus system employs 91 total points, which can be divided into 325 total areas for a high degree of focusing accuracy in a variety of lighting conditions. Approximately 50% side-to-side and 75% top-to-bottom of the frame is covered by phase-detection points in order to provide fast AF performance to suit working with moving subjects.

When working with autofocus, you can choose either single-shot AF-S mode or continuous AF-C mode, and each can be used in conjunction with Single Point AF, Zone AF, or Wide/Tracking AF settings. Additionally, AF-C Custom Settings let you choose from five AF-C presets depending on how your subject is moving, and the AF algorithm has been optimized for improved subject tracking and overall accuracy.
Film Simulation Modes
Taking advantage of FUJIFILM's vast history in traditional film-based photography, the X-T20 integrates several Film Simulation modes, which can be used for photos or videos, to mimic the look and feel of some of FUJIFILM's classic film types. A refined Classic Chrome mode is designed to deliver muted tones and a deep color reproduction, similar to that of a dated slide film. Pulling from their more contemporary line of transparency films, Provia offers natural-looking tones for everyday shooting, Velvia produces a more dramatic and rich tonality with deeper color saturation, and Astia gives less contrast for a softer depiction of skin tones. Mimicking their negative films, Pro Neg. Std. gives smooth image tones that are suitable for accurate color renditions, while Pro Neg. Hi produces a more dramatic feel with the ability to draw color out of a variety of lighting conditions. In addition to the colorful benefits of these Film Simulation modes, there are also monochrome modes that simulate the look of traditional yellow, green, and red black and white contrast filters, as well as an Acros mode that can also be paired with colored filter effects. A sepia mode is also available for producing an inherently nostalgic look.
Other Camera Features
  • Advanced SR Auto mode can be used for fully automatic shooting with scene recognition to permit on-the-fly shooting in a variety of settings.
  • Interval Timer shooting lets you record an infinite number of consecutive frames with 1 second to 24 hour intervals, and a 1 minute to 24 hour starting delay.
  • Multiple Exposure mode lets you shoot two consecutive overlaid frames, and the first frame will be shown on the rear LCD to aid in alignment for the second exposure.
  • In-camera 180° panoramas can be shot by simply panning the camera about the scene.
  • Advanced Filters: Toy Camera, Dynamic Tone, Miniature, High Key, Soft Focus, Pop Color, Low Key, and Partial Color (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple).

    FUJIFILM X-T20 reviews

X-T20 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Silver) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Will buy a second one as soon as I sell my Nikon D750. My first encounter with Fujifilm camera, was a photo posted by a friend, who is a professional photographer. I was impressed. I contacted him asking which camera he had used, and was informed he had just bought the X T2. I pre-ordered the X T20. Its not dust and water proof, but that is not a concern for me. The key components are the same, so it will get the same results, and for few dollar difference I can have two cameras. Michael D

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional picture quality I bought this to use with the lenses I have for my X-Pro1, and enjoying it immensely. I take photos at local car shows and being in my 70s and with a bad back I was having problems getting shots at a lower point of view with my X-Pro 1. The tilting LCD monitor on the X-T20 makes such photos much easier. I'm still getting used to the touch screen, which I believe I will really use a lot in the future. The small body and buttons on the camera take a little getting used to, but I don't see any major problems. All in all it is what I expected from reading the reviews and am very happy with the camera and the very superb picture quality. I might consider getting a grip for it, but for now I really like the light weight and small size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A total winner Wanted a second Fuji body to go with my X-T2. Turns out I am living this lighter, smaller body with the touch screen. Using it more than its big brother

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Upgrade from X-Pro 1, Especially for the Price I am a big fan of this camera after using it for a couple weeks. Coming from the X-Pro 1, I was a bit skeptical about losing the optical view finder. But the electronic one on the X-T20 is a huge improvement over the last generation of X series cameras. Of course, it would be nice to get the X-Pro 2, but I couldn't justify spending nearly double the money for the same sensor. The small form factor of the XT-20 is also a plus; it still feels very solidly built.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome compact APS-C So far, so good. Really digging it! Due to it's small size, I feel like I am a college kid again rocking a Nikon FG and a roll of Kodachrome. It's really compact. If you got big hands or the huge lenses, I would try before you buy. With the 18-55 or any of my primes, feels great in hands. I got the leather Fuji case to help balance my bigger lenses such as the 18-135 and it works well. I switched over to the Sony A6300 for awhile and while it took phenomenal pictures, I felt as if I was using a computer and not a camera. Going back to Fuji I feel at home again as the control interface is superb. It's no lie that the Fuji's have soul... very tactile in operation. Very much like a vintage film camera. As far as image quality, it's first rate for APS-C. Beautiful Fuji colors and the lenses are in my opinion the best next to Leica. The JPEGS are so good, I find I do not shoot RAW much anymore unless I am in a dicey situation exposure wise. Video is probably better with the Sony (I am still experimenting with Fuji video), but looks pretty good on Fuji, too.It would be nice to have a firmware update enabling the Log settings of the Sony.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything I wanted and more My first Fujifilm product and I couldn't be happier. I struggled to find an in-depth review with candid opinions rather than just stats/facts while I was considering this camera and after purchasing, I feel compelled to write something comprehensive. Now let me start by saying that I'm a professional photographer and I generally do all my work photography with large, full-frame DSLR cameras, but I was in search of a camera that is small, powerful, and fun to shoot with. There are plenty of reviewers out there who do dynamic testing of all the technical specs, so I'll just be giving my candid, honest opinion of this camera as a happy consumer. If you're looking for the short answer: Buy this camera. If you're looking for a small, high quality, fully functional mirrorless camera that's loaded with tons of features, that's customizable, and reasonably priced, then this is the one. Did I mention all the wonderful glass available from Fuji? Long answer: (Examples were taken with the x-t20 and the xf 35mm f/2 R WR.) Image quality - This 24mp aps-c sensor is fantastic. It's sharp and clear, and renders image quality even at higher ISO settings. The colors on this camera are also fantastic. I shoot RAW so definitely comes out of the camera pretty flat (which is what I'm looking for), but it has high quality color information. High enough resolution that cropping is an option if needed without too much quality sacrifice. Noise is a slight issue at higher ISO, more than my Full-Frame I'm used to but barely, and it can be easily managed with some basic noise reduction in post-processing. I generally shoot below ISO 1600 where noise is no issue at all, but even up to levels of 3200 or 5000 quality loss due to image noise is acceptable. So this is a great camera for use in low light, especially when used with Fuji's fast primes like the 35mm f/2 WR that I use. Dynamic range is something to talk about on this camera for sure. It has fantastic dynamic range when shooting RAW and can be adjusted nearly a full 3 stops without too much degradation in quality. When shooting a photo such as the attached photo through a gazebo into a bright exterior scene with the sailboat and rainbow, you can expose for the bright part of the scene and still draw amazing detail out of the shadowy dark region of the photo. See for yourself after some adjusting with Adobe Light Room (Lr). Another example photos attached is to show the clarity and contrast capabilities. This black and white image is of the Portland Maine Customs House. Design - This camera is designed to be similar to the old film SLR cameras of the past and I'll say, I have been missing my Pentax k-1000 and this camera looks and even feels a bit like shooting with that again which was fun. Above all, photography needs to be fun, and using this camera has definitely been exactly that. I read a review somewhere that said this camera simply has soul, and that reviewer is right! Manual adjustment knobs are all great to have and with the small size of the camera and the precise adjustments available on modern cameras, they have found a way to combine the full stop adjustments on the physical dedicated shutter speed knob and then add the thumb dial to fine tune your exposures. The articulating screen is a great addition. It doesn't fully articulate like some other screens I've used and it leaves a little to be desired when shooting verticals but I know they solved that with the x-t2 and they simply had to loose that feature in the interest of size. No weather sealing is another compromise to keep cost/size down and I'm fine with it. It still has a solid construction. Also, many xf lenses are in fact weather sealed still, and usually my lenses are what I worry about with dust and moisture. battery life is short but the camera comes in the box with two batteries which is generous of Fujifilm and having two batteries has left me with plenty of power for a day of shooting, the key is to turn the camera off between photos, and this is made possibly by my next point. The on switch wraps around the shutter making it easy to access and it has become reflex for me to now turn on, compose, focus, shoot, and turn off all in one smooth process. The reason I can do this is because there is practically zero lag in the startup. I believe Fujifilm claims a .4 sec startup to be exact but it fast enough that I don't notice any startup time. In fact, it feels like it turns on faster than it wakes up if its asleep, so for me it's actually better to turn it off between subjects. If you turn off often, you will have no power issues. The touch screen is a nice addition, and all the touch-to-focus and touch-to-shoot are fast, accurate, and effective. This is the first electronic view finder (EVF) that I've used and I'm immediately sold on the concept. I always liked my mirrors and optical view finder (OVF) and mirrors to look directly through the lens (TTL), but this is a great alternate solution for shooting on bright sunny days. I'd have to say my favorite thing about the construction of the camera body is that there is a long list of buttons on the body that can be customized to specific features that suit you best. The list of customizable options and buttons was longer than I expected and it will take me quite a while to fine tune all these options but long term, the camera will be so well suited to me, it'll be hard to shoot any other camera body. There is a custom menu option as well where you can keep a short list - favorites if you will - of most used menu settings and keep them all in one place which immediately becomes your default menu screen when you press the menu button. I can't believe I'm actually saying this but, the pop-up flash is a nice addition. This is a travel and every-day camera for me so there will be some situations where I need to capture a memory and an on-body pop-up flash will be a fair sacrifice in light quality to ensure that the photo doesn't get missed altogether. Size is perfect to me. I know that some think it's too small but this camera is specifically designed to be travel worthy so I find the size just right. The rubber grips actually proved a decent grip as well. Holding this camera will not be super easy for those with big hands, but then again, if you want a big camera, then this camera wasn't designed for you. This camera is designed to be travel size and still a powerful camera and it is both of those things. Conclusion: This will not be replacing my full-frame DSLR but it will be going everywhere with me and in some cases it just might even be my secondary camera for some work gigs. It's making my day-to-day photography more fun and because of that, I bring it more places, which in turn is allowing more photography opportunities. I recommend this camera to anyone leaning towards it. Thanks for reading, Hope this helps

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The XT20 is a definite joy to use and highly recommend it. I bought this camera as a backup for my XT2 . The fact is that I'm uing this XT20 far more than my XT2, I've been a Nikon user for the past 40+years and I'm having fun using this camera as a reminder of the old days of my FM Nikon. Fuji did an outstanding job with this product and the fact that I have all the Fuji prime lenses makes this camera a go to camera more than my other Fuji XE2S and XT2 cameras. I like the ergonomics specially having small hands and very simple to use and it brought back fun into photography.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome camera but had to clean the lens contacts on the bod Love this camera, however when it arrived i had problems with my lenses focusing and communicating well with the camera. B&H tech dept suggested cleaning the contacts on both the lens and the camera body. Ended up being something not visible to the naked eye on the body contacts. I gently cleaned it off with an eraser head as suggested and it started working perfectly!
