Libec HFMP overview

  • 1Description

The Libec Hands-Free Monopod combines with an included tripod base to create a versatile support system while recording with a video camera, camcorder, or DSLR. The base features fold-out legs that when deployed, produces a 17.3" spread, forming a stable, free-standing platform that allows the monopod and camera placed on it to swivel 360° and be tilted 20° in any direction.

A foot-activated latch is positioned between the legs and the bottom of the monopod. Pressing and releasing the latch unlocks it, enabling the swivel and tilt movements for smooth angle or perspective adjustments. After recording a subject at a desired angle while gripping the monopod as well as the attached camera or a separately-available video head, the monopod can be returned to the upright position and locked into place by again pressing and releasing the latch.

When configured with its tripod base, the Libec Hands-Free Monopod supports up to 17.6 lb and measures 28.9" when folded. The monopod consists of three sections which utilize flip locks for fast deployment, and can be positioned for a minimum height of 29.1" to a maximum height of 69.3". A rubber cover along the top section provides a secure and comfortable grip while moving the monopod, and rubber feet on the base's legs help to enhance stability on a wide variety of surfaces.

Tripod or monopod heads, as well as cameras, lenses, or sport optics that are directly compatible with a 3/8"-16 mount can be connected to the top of the Libec Hands-Free Monopod. It is constructed from aluminum-alloy for durability while remaining lightweight, has an integrated wrist strap, and includes a shoulder bag with a drawstring closure.

    Libec HFMP reviews

Hands-Free Monopod is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Get a Sirui instead I grabbed this thinking it might be an upgrade from my Sirui. It's much heavier than the Sirui, which would be ok if it was sturdier, however it's not. The monopod sways a lot more than I'd like. It doesn't feel like it will fall over, just that there's a lot of movement that you have to try and keep under control. The centre column spins, so when you put a fluid head on top you have to try and hold the pole still whilst allowing the fluid head to do the panning. It doesn't work well and has ruined shots. The foot activated pedal to switch between locked / free moving is the only good thing about this monopod. Unfortunately the bad outweighs the good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is good! I just received my HFMP, and I'm very pleased with it. I have a range of monopods, from Manfrotto, Sirui and others, so I have a lot of experience with this form of support. For video, this is a great solution. Solidly constructed, large easy-to-open feet, and a very effective foot-operated lock-on lock-off feature. The flip levers for height changes is faster than the rotating-collar style, and the HFMP extends to a very effective full height. For video, I always use a levelling base in conjunction with a tilting video head (Manfrotto MVH500AH for example). When using a monopod unlocked, it really is just a 'stick' to add stability, and to relieve fatigue in longer 'take' situations (recording a meeting or press conference for example) - if you don't have a levelling head between the monopod and the video head, then you have to maintain side to side 'level' yourself, which is basically impossible - with a lockable levelling head (several available at B&H - Novoflex, Sunwayfoto etc) you keep the benefit of support and stability, but add the required flexibility to change angle or direction quickly and fluidly without unwanted tilting. Further, the feet on the HFMP are big enough to be able to confidently use it as a small to medium LED light stand in a tight spot (the total footprint being so small). So, have your LED on the HFMP, and a diffuser screen on a regular lightstand, without the feet clashing with each other (a common problem in tight interview situations. Highly recommended.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 3 stars preview The material is great and strong. When you get the loose the base, monopod is not stable. Not provide a smooth pan as I expect.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Ok but better options out there I compared this to my Sirui and it's inferior in every way except for the quick engage of the lock. It wobble more when the foot is locked, has no way to tighten the pan down and use a true fluid head on top, and is overall kind of cheap feeling.
