Leica M10 overview

  • 1Description

Embracing their filmic heritage without losing sight of contemporary needs, the Leica M10 blends a pared-down physical design with enhanced imaging capabilities to produce an elegant and intuitive tool for still photography. Utilizing a redeveloped 24MP full-frame CMOS sensor and Maestro II image processor, the M10 yields high-resolution imagery with an extended dynamic range, high sensitivity to ISO 50000, and a continuous shooting rate of 5 fps. Separating itself from previous digital M rangefinders, the M10 features a slim body profile reminiscent of M film cameras, and the optical viewfinder's magnification has been increased to 0.73x for greater composition and focusing accuracy. The body design also incorporates a dedicated ISO dial for quick adjustment, even when the camera is turned off, and the rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD features a Gorilla Glass cover to guard against scratching and light impacts. Also contributing to durability, the top and bottom plates are constructed from brass and the chassis is built from magnesium alloy to realize a robust physical construction for long-lasting use. Additionally, unique among M cameras, the M10 also sports an integrated Wi-Fi module for wireless sharing and remote camera control from a linked mobile device.

Leica M10
Refocusing their attention on the basics, the M10 pares down its feature-set to reveal a more simplified and direct method for working. Taking cues from Leica's film camera legacy, the M10 has the slimmest body of any digital M camera, and also distinguishes itself with a physical ISO dial, higher magnification optical viewfinder than previous digital Ms, and the omission of video recording in order to focus purely on still photography.
24MP CMOS Sensor and Maestro II Processor
A redeveloped full-frame 24MP CMOS sensor pairs with the Maestro II image processor to deliver a wide dynamic range with notable color rendering, as well as enhanced sensitivity from ISO 100-50000 to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. The image processor also incorporates a 2GB buffer to afford fast continuous shooting at 5 fps for up to 40 consecutive frames in a burst.
Optical Viewfinder and Rangefinder
The optical viewfinder is a large, bright-line 0.73x-magnification rangefinder with automatic parallax compensation and bright-line frame lines, which are set to match the image sensor size at a focusing distance of 6.6'. On the front of the camera, a viewfinder frame selector can also be used to manually change the apparent image field to help visualize the scene with varying focal lengths; options are available in 35mm/135mm, 28mm/90mm, and 50mm/75mm focal length pairs.

The rangefinder mechanism displays split or superimposed bright field images within the center of the viewfinder to benefit accurate manual focusing control. The effective rangefinder metering basis is 50.6mm (mechanical metering basis 69.31 mm x viewfinder magnification of 0.73x).
Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi
  • Slim body profile is reminiscent of Leica's film cameras for easier handling and manipulation.
  • Integrated ISO dial is featured on the top plate to permit simple and direct adjustment of sensitivity values, even when the camera is turned off.
  • The rear of the camera features just three buttons—live view, playback, and menu—for more simplified and intuitive navigation of the camera's control-set.
  • A programmable Favorites menu can be used, which allows you to define your most oft-used settings and select them for easy, one-touch access.
  • 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD monitor provides a high-resolution means for image playback as well as live view shooting.
  • Rear LCD monitor has a Corning Gorilla Glass cover to protect it against scratching and impacts.
  • Top and bottom plates are machined from solid blocks of brass and the chassis is built from magnesium alloy for a truly durable, hard-wearing physical construction.
  • Rubber seals are used to prevent the entrance of light rain and dust to enable working in inclement conditions.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi permits sharing imagery directly to a linked smartphone and also enables remote control over the M10 to adjust select shooting parameters or to release the shutter via the Leica M app.
Other Camera Features
  • When working in live view, focus peaking is available to highlight edges of contrast for easier, more precise manual focus adjustment.
  • Designed to accept all M-mount lenses, Leica R-mount lenses are also compatible through the use of an optional R to M adapter.
  • Compatible with the optional Visoflex accessory electronic viewfinder for manually focusing adapted lenses.
  • Images can be recorded in either the DNG or JPEG file format.
  • A top hot shoe permits working with an external flash and the top sync speed is 1/180 sec.
  • Language support: German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Russian, and Korean.

    Leica M10 reviews

M10 Digital Rangefinder Camera (Silver) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much better than the M240. I’ve bonded with M10 I never bonded with the M240. I loved my M9 but was frustrated with low light/ISO and lack of EVF. Pics have more of an M9 feel with the M10 which I love. When I first read about the camera being thinner I was thinking -so what? Well it really does make a difference to the shooting experience. These cameras are about image quality as well as taking pleasure in shooting. Once again I look forward to use my Leica. Sort of lost that with the 240. ISO is excellent in low light. EVF is much better than the one for M240 (which was also very good). Used M 240s are still well worth the current used price but if you have a chance to get this one go it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from returned My Previous review was too cheerful I had to return the M10 to B&H. In a word: the M10 worked 90% of the time. The two problems, in order of frequency were 1. failure of the LV, play, and menu button to work when pressed, failure of the camera to turn on when switched on (happenedtwice in three weeks) Leica suggested that the issue may lie in the memory card, yet Leica, WBway, claimed the Extreme PRoSDXC card is their standard card for the M10. I can only hope that the replacement works 100%and not 90% of the time. One does not spend seven grand for 90%.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Possibly best retail service Never owned a range finder for some years been a Nikon user, have to share that is the most fabulous camera that puts creativity back in your own hands and mind. Always been a question in my mind re the Leica. And I feel after two decades I have found my holy grail of camera - Beautiful aesthetically to hold, nice weight, simple interface and a real delight. Of course you can discuss the price, the build, etc - this is a real genuine example of you get what you pay for in life. To use is a joy, the quality of the imagery is beyond beautiful. I purchased from from Richard at B&H who simplified the whole sale and experience. Hat's off to B&H great team. I traded in all my Nikon gear and be loved lenses, at a satisfactory trade for both parties, no regret moving to the M10. Its Exceptional.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Leica Really Got It Right This Time This Leica has exceeded my fondest expectations. It is simply a superb camera. I have owned seven different Leica M cameras, and this one takes the prize. The only other Leica that compares with it, at least as far as I am concerned, is my beloved old favorite M6. The M10 has made numerous changes to the M9; all of them good, none bad. A few examples: The software processing is much faster and just generally better. The optical view finder is brighter and easier to use. The off/on switch keeps you from turning it to the wrong setting, unlike the M9 where you could easily make a wrong choice. The bottom plate is much easier to attach, and you really have a hard time getting it wrong; also unlike the M9. The back display is large, bright, and of top quality. One very nice touch is that you can immediately review your shots in black and white if you like. The camera just feels good; like a Leica. I could go on, but what it all amounts to is that this camera is a beautiful thing, a work of art.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely amazing camera!! The Leica M10 is the first digital camera that reaches the supreme level of quality and performance expected from Leica. Lots of refinement when compared to M Type 240. Size is back to that of original Leica M3, improved viewfinder makes focusing much easier. Expanded ISO permits outstanding lowlight photography. Menu navigation is much simpler. Build quality is better than any camera on the market. Thank you Leica!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from At last! A digital Leica that lives up to its heritage... Ten years ago I sold my film Leicas and used the money to buy Canon digital cameras -- by now including five pro bodies and ten L lenses. I have been very happy with the Canon gear; it’s excellent and I continue to depend on the Canon system’s fast autofocus, great lenses, and extensive range of capabilities. But I missed the very different feel and quiet operation of Leica cameras and lenses, with which I had been photographing exclusively since buying a used Leica in 1963. At various times in the last ten years I visited camera stores to try some of the Leica M digital cameras but they didn’t have the comfortable and intuitive operation I remembered from the IIIg and the M3 and M4-P film cameras. The M10, however, is different: a pleasure to use, a noticeable 4.7 mm thinner than the M (typ 240), it feels right in the hand, and it is quiet, uncluttered, and straightforward -- the essence of camera, like the old film Leicas. The M10 and the superb Leica lenses are excellent, and I like the colors rendered by the M10’s new sensor. It’s much better than its predecessors in low light. Images exposed at ISO 6400 are remarkably free of grain. If there’s a downside to this camera it may be the battery, which is smaller and has less capacity than batteries for other digital Leicas; apparently this was necessitated by the thinner body. Many of the world’s great photojournalists depended on their Leicas to deliver an image under the most demanding conditions. I’ve used Leicas in Cambodian combat zones during the heat and mud of the monsoon and the only time I was disappointed was once when I failed to load a roll of film properly! While I haven’t had this M10 long enough yet, or used it hard, Leicas have always been built to last, and this one feels solid and precise. A rangefinder camera means manual -- not automatic -- focusing, which in a Leica is fast and accurate. The M10 can meter the light and, if you wish, it can choose speed and exposure automatically (either or both) but you are always shooting in aperture priority, deciding which f-stop to use. So it’s not a “point-and-shoot, but perhaps more a “think-and-shoot,” reassuringly precise and responsive when you want to take time to consider light and composition. And once you become familiar with the camera you’ll find it also excels at street photography, where a small and unobtrusive camera is less likely to intimidate or call attention to itself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful lowlight performance Really enjoying this camera on my second day of use. Quality in very low light at ISO 6,400 with a 28mm 1.4 blew me away. Opens up a lot of photographic opportunities for me. Delighted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is what it is The Leica m10 fills a very precise niche in the market. If you are looking for a very specific camera like this - there are very few choices. I wanted a rangefinder. I wanted something very small. I wanted exceptional lenses. I wanted something beautifully made. The Leica nails every category. The rangefinder experience is different from an AF SLR. You are forced to compose your shot and to take time in focusing. As a result, you are forced to think more about the pic you are taking. Less spray and pray and a higher keeper rate results. I previously shot a Nikon d800 and Canon 5DMark IV. Both great cameras, but comparatively huge. The Leica is small - carrying it all day is no big deal. It's discrete. The shutter is not loud. High ISO performance is very good. RAW images are particularly high quality. It doesn't pull shadows like a Nikon, however. DR latitude is good enough for my style - I rarely pull/push more than 1eV. I prefer the small resolution - image quality is indistinguishable at normal viewing sizes on my 5K screen. There are some small quirks - you have to remove the bottom plate to access the SD card, for instance. Not a big deal. Battery life is not great - but so far has not been a major issue. Leica should really include a bonus battery, IMO. The m10 is a great camera for those who've been using SLRs for years and need something new. There is a back to basics quality to it that is very appealing. It is also absolutely beautiful and a pleasure simply to hold. It is expensive - no doubt the value is poor. That said - usability is high, picture quality is excellent and I have zero regrets. Highly recommended.
