Sonnet TWIN10GC-TB3 Overview

From Manufacturer

The Sonnet Twin 10G Thunderbolt 3 to Dual-Port 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter provides two 10GbE ports for your Thunderbolt 3 system. The Twin 10G features two Thunderbolt 3 ports, so you can daisy-chain up to 6 Thunderbolt devices to a single system. With an onboard Intel X550 10GbE controller, the Twin 10G assists your system's processor with flow controls as well as TCP, UDP, and IPv4 checksum processes, freeing up the CPU to work on other tasks. For cooling the internal components, it comes equipped with a variable-speed fan. Moreover, Sonnet includes a 1.6' Thunderbolt cable along with a ThunderLok 3, which secures the cable to the chassis.

10GbE
The Twin 10G Thunderbolt 3 Edition adapter is equipped with two Ethernet ports, enabling it to connect to 10GbE infrastructures via Cat 6 or Cat 6A copper cabling at distances up to 180.4' (55m) or 328.1' (100m), respectively.
Simplified Setup
Connect the Twin 10G Thunderbolt 3 Edition adapter to your computer via the included Thunderbolt 3 cable, download and install a driver, connect the adapter to the network switch, and configure the adapter's settings through the Mac OS X Network control panel or Windows Device Manager. Instead of a network switch, you can also connect it directly to a 10GbE-enabled storage device via Cat 6 or Cat 6A cables.
Intelligent Operation
The Twin 10G Thunderbolt 3 Edition adapter attains its high-throughput performance and low host-CPU utilization through functions that include flow control, 64-bit address support for systems using more than 4GB of physical memory, and stateless offloads, such as TCP, UDP, and IPv4 checksum offloading. These processes enable your computer to perform better while large files transfer or high I/O operations take place. Its dual 10GbE connections support transparent failover to keep your computer connected in case a single cable is disconnected or one of the ports fails. In addition, the connections come with link-aggregation support for increased throughput.
Small and Nearly Noiseless
The Twin 10G Thunderbolt 3 Edition adapter is compact enough to easily fit in most workspaces, yet large enough to support proper airflow inside the case. The Twin 10G Thunderbolt 3 is armed with a temperature-controlled, variable-speed fan that keeps it running cool and quiet, making it suitable for use in noise-sensitive environments. Constructed of rugged and lightweight aluminum, the adapter's outer shell protects the inner components.
Thunderbolt 3
The Twin 10G Thunderbolt 3 Edition adapter includes two Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports; the first connects the adapter to your computer, while the second supports daisy-chaining of up to five additional Thunderbolt peripheral devices to a single port on your computer. The 40 Gb/s throughput of Thunderbolt 3 includes support for USB 3.1 with 10 Gb/s speeds, meaning you can connect a typical USB device to the second port using an optional adapter or cable. Thunderbolt 3 also supports dual-bandwidth DisplayPort 1.2, meaning it can power connecting two 4K displays @ 60 Hz or one multi-panel 5K display @ 60 Hz. For connected devices requiring extra power, 15 watts is provided to connected bus-powered devices.
ThunderLok 3 and Thunderbolt 3 Cable Included
The Twin 10G Thunderbolt 3 Edition adapter includes a 1.6' (0.5m) Thunderbolt 3 cable to connect to your computer and a Sonnet ThunderLok 3 Thunderbolt connector retainer clip for securing the cable to the adapter. Sonnet's ThunderLok 3 helps prevent accidental cable disconnects that can lead to data loss by securing the Thunderbolt cable to the adapter. ThunderLok 3 is easy to install and use: just slide it over one of the cable's connectors, plug in the connector, and then secure it to the adapter by turning a thumbscrew. Because ThunderLok doesn't attach to the connector, it remains on the cable and won't get lost when not in use.

Solid 10G connection until I push large file transfers

I originally bought the thunderbolt powered single version of this and it kept dropping my connection. Having 2 of these now on separate Mac Studios, I can tell you that the work well enough. Everything is hooked up on a 10G backplane. You can do a large file push one direction, but if you try and do anything else with a large amount of files, the connection just drops and I have to reload all my mapped drives.

Just works.

Outstanding -- had an OWC box that claimed to do the same; fought its spotty performance for a year before buying this. Works like a charm.

question

Could the Thunderbolt 3 be conected to a USB-C. I know that Thunderbolt 3.1 and USB-C are compatible but not sure for Thunderbolt 3.0?
Asked by: Michel
I have also attempted to use the device in a USB-C port. The operating system (Windows 10 in this case) recognizes the device, but it will not function. I would recommend that a note be put in the product description that it does NOT function with USB-C.
