FMR Audio RNP8380 Overview

The RNP8380 Really Nice Preamp from FMR Audio is a pair of separate microphone preamps with Class-A operation that provides up to 66 dB of gain with low-distortion levels in a compact 1/3 rack format. It features accurate signal metering, DI inputs, and 48V phantom power, and can be used in studio and live applications.

Each channel of the RNP is built with a gold-plated 12-position gain switch, XLR inputs, TRS inserts between preamp stage and output drivers, 1/4" Hi-Z inputs, and +28 dBu TRS-balanced outputs. Additionally, there is very little coloration—no unexpected frequency response peaks and valleys— across the wide frequency response at the gain settings.

Furthermore, the Hi-Z input is suitable for guitar, bass, and keyboard instruments while the balance XLR jack permits input with dynamic and condenser microphones. Finally, the special circuitry constantly measures and adjusts circuit parameters to eliminate gain-control path capacitors. This avoids individual-trimming to achieve low-distortion, high-CMRR (common-mode rejection ratio) performance over the life of the preamp.

Balanced/Unbalanced Operation
Both the mic inputs and micpre outputs are electronically balanced.
Hi-Z DI Inputs
These inputs are designed to take a source like bass, keyboard, or guitar instruments.
Slowly-Ramping 48V Supply
To reduce the chance of destroying mics connected to the RNP that can't tolerate +48V applied to them, the voltage is ramped up slowly.
EMI-Resistant
The RNP utilizes an EMI filter at the front end that is designed to attenuate RF while giving a smooth audio performance up to 240 kHz.
Output Mutes
The outputs are momentarily muted during phantom power engagement/disengagement and DI/mic switching.
Stepped Gain Control
Allows precise gain-setting between multiple channels. It is built with a Grayhill 12-position switch to set the RNP's gain.
Phase Inversion Control
You can accommodate any phase problems due to things like system cabling. It inverts the polarity of the mic-preamp output signal relative to the input.
Precision Metering
Three LEDs per channel are provided for accurate metering.
