Blackmagic Design ATEM overview

  • 1Description

Designed for broadcasters and A/V professionals, Blackmagic Design's ATEM Television Studio HD is a compact yet powerful and easy-to-operate solution. Four of each HDMI and SDI inputs are available on the rear of the chassis, and both sets of inputs support SD and HD resolution signals. The relatively small chassis can fit on a standard equipment rack with the separately available Teranex Mini Rack Shelf, so it can be brought on location for streaming video, or installed semi-permanently for recording or broadcasting from a studio.

The front panel keeps essential controls at arm's reach, while more advanced controls and settings, such as upstream and downstream keyers, graphics, media, and precise mixing for the 10 channels of available audio can be accessed through the USB interface or with an ATEM control surface. Move to the rear to reveal the BNC and HDMI connections for input and output. Multiview can be transmitted over SDI or HDMI to align with your equipment setup, and an AUX output lets you send video to an external display, which is great for live events with a projection setup. Four of the SDI outputs have embedded talkback audio for studio setups. Blackmagic Design Studio Cameras can also be controlled from the switcher for consistent looks across the board.

Transitions
Choose from a wide range of transitions including cut, mix, dip, and wipe patterns. ATEM Television Studio HD makes every transition instantly available and gives you full control over type, pattern, length, and more.

Available transitions include:
  • Cut: When you press the cut button, ATEM instantly changes from your current program source to the preview source. Cuts can be performed by directly selecting sources or by pressing the cut button to switch to the next source on the preview bus.
  • Mix: The mix, or dissolve transition, gradually transitions from one source to the next by creating a smooth blend. You can set custom timings to manually blend the transition.
  • Dip: Just like mix transitions, a dip transition is a gradual blend that includes either a solid color, graphic, or another clip between the two video sources. Dips to black or white between sources are the most popular, or you can use logos or sponsor graphics.
  • Wipe: ATEM Television Studio HD has 18 built-in wipe patterns. Choose from circles, diamonds, squares, and more. Shapes and patterns can be inverted, softened, or even have customized colored borders. You can even insert live video into the borders for further customization.
  • DVE: The ATEM Television Studio HD has a powerful built-in Digital Video Effects processor, or DVE. You can push, spin, squeeze and swoosh your live video from one camera to the next with incredible built-in DVE transitions. DVE transitions can be flip-flopped and reversed, giving you even more transition options. With 35 built-in pre-programmed moves, you can get started with advanced transitions. Graphic wipes can also be created by combining a DVE transition with a logo created in Photoshop.

Upstream Keyer
Layer live video over other video sources or graphics with the Upstream Keyer. You can use luma key, linear key, pattern key, or shoot against a green screen and use chroma key to instantly composite the video over virtual sets.
  • Luma key: Luma keys are sometimes known as a self key because the same video source is used for cutting the key and overlaying the video image. Luma keys work best with high contrast images, like white elements on a black background, so you can use the contrast to cut the black background and replace it with live video or graphics.
  • Linear key: Get clean, high-quality results with linear keying by using two separate sources for the fill and the key to create one video image. The fill signal contains the video to be stacked over the background, while the key signal contains a grayscale mask to cut out, or mask, the area to be filled.
  • Chroma key: Used every day for TV weather forecasts, chroma keys are a powerful way of combining live images together in real time. The presenter typically stands in front of a green or blue background and the chroma keyer will remove only that color and combine it with another image, such as a video or graphic.
  • Pattern key: Combine live images with any of the 18 built-in wipe patterns to combine live images or graphics with geometric shapes. You get full control over softness, symmetry, size, and position to create unique picture-in-picture effects that can be transitioned to as easily as any live source.

Downstream Keyers
The ATEM Television Studio HD includes two downstream keyers so you can add high-quality graphics like logos, bugs, and titles from the built-in media players over the live 'on air' program output. Downstream keyers are the last layers of keying, so they overlay all video switched to the main program output.
Power Macros
To automate complex sequences of precisely timed actions on your ATEM switcher, you can now create powerful shortcuts called macros. Record a sequence of transitions between video sources, including key effects, audio mixer adjustments, camera control settings, and more using the ATEM software or hardware control panel. Macros are saved as XML files that can be edited with a standard text editor, so you can combine them together to build sophisticated sequences that would be impossible to execute manually during a live production. That means you can create unique looks or your programs that can be recalled instantly, copied between switchers, and used repeatedly when you require them.
Mix Minus
The four SDI talkback outputs on the ATEM Television Studio HD support mix minus, which is important when you are working with remote interviewees. For example, you could remove input 5 from the program audio on output 5, so the remote interviewee hears everything in the program except themselves talking and won't be distracted by any audio delay.
Audio Mixer
The built-in audio mixer lets you control camera and external audio with precision level and balance adjustments on all 10 available channels. You can enable or disable channels, or activate audio-follow-video (AFV) mode instantly. Adjust the mixer via the ATEM Control Software or plug in an external Mackie standard USB fader panel.
Multiview
Multiview allows you to see your sources, graphics, preview, and program outputs on a single screen so you don't need separate monitors for your individual cameras. You get HDMI and SDI multiview outputs so you can connect professional broadcast SDI monitors, computer monitors, or even consumer HDTV sets.
Media Players
Eliminate external character generators by storing up to 20 broadcast quality RGBA graphic files in the media pool. The two media players appear as input sources to your switcher. You can transition to graphics as full frame video or feed them to the keyers for overlaying video. Popular image formats such as PNG, TGA, BMP, GIF, JPEG, and TIFF are supported.
ATEM Photoshop Plugin
Use the included Photoshop plugin to create still broadcast graphics and instantly add them to the ATEM Television Studio HD's media pool. Add professional looking logos, lower thirds, scorecards, or other real-time graphics and get them on air in no time.

    Blackmagic Design ATEM reviews

ATEM Television Studio HD is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Louder than expected but awesome I looked into this switcher workflow a few years back but hesitated because the reviews were mixed. I wanted reliability. INPUT: I hesitated because people said it could not read from different input sources. That's not my experience. This unit handles everything I have thrown at it. Canon C100, C100 markii, Panasonic Gh4, various laptops via HDMI, SDI/HDMI and HDMI/SDI converters. It takes a loop out HDMI from my atomos ninja, also. Multiview is great. AUDIO: Easy and consistent. I can isolate and combine audio sources easily. I can run audio in a mixer if I want, but I don't like doing that if I can help it. Lots of options, all good. Five stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's great! We've owned the original ATEM and the 4k Production Switcher for years. This is the best of both. The push buttons on the front are great for situations where you don't want to hook up a computer. You can switch the Program out AND the Aux out with the front buttons. Or you can still use the software just like the other models. Only downfall I've found so far is there is no HDMI out for the Program, so you have to use an SDI to HDMI converter. Not a major deal, but another piece to have. The extra SDI outs are a bonus to have as well. This switcher is a fantastic deal. Same price as the original ATEM with more features!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blackmagic is excellent I can appreciate the ATEM Television Studio HD because I am an old TV engineer. And yes, I have been keeping up with the technology. This company has produced a fantastic product. Our church is upgrading our TV ministry to HD and we selected this switcher and the Blackmagic Hyperdeck Mini recorder. I have been learning and testing these units at home for two weeks and they are all I hoped they would be. I'm very surprised that a small low cost unit like this can do so much. To learn all it's capabilities It is a good idea to connect it with a computer but you don't have to. I can't say enough.....excellent equipment!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great product in a small package I ordered this switcher to replace an extron that we were using to feed our projectors at church. The extron had issues with the speed we needed to make changes from one source to another and transitions were never smooth or expedient. Upon receipt and initial setup of the BMD TV Studio I was unable to connect my laptop to the switcher using the included software. After downloading and installing the latest version (7.2), I was able to access and upgrade the system software and perform all functions and settings needed to get this beauty up to speed. I'm using 2 projectors and 2 TVs in the lobby, plus an output to livestream through the Aux 1 output. All is working flawless.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Ready for the Big Time We thought we were lucky to be one of the first production houses to receive this seemingly amazing new switcher from BMD -- who generally makes incredible products. The first one they sent would not see any video or audio signals via SDI connections. BMDs tech support had us send it back and they sent another. The second box had the exact same problem. We updated it to the new firmware and then IT WOULD NO LONGER POWER UP. Wow! Not from BMD you say? Believe it. Total disaster for us and long story short and after thousands of dollars in engineering labor, we sent the second box back to them and got our money back. We will stick with their other ATEMs which we love and depend on. This little box is a good concept at best.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not entirely 1080p60 compatible First off, I really like this device. The price point is great and it allows for some pretty high-level production value. I just spent the last few days going back and forth with BM Support trying to figure out why I couldn't get a camcorder (Panasonic AG-AC90) or a laptop (MacBook Pro) to show up on one of the SDI inputs via an HDMI to SDI converter. Those same camcorders and laptop show up just fine through the HDMI inputs on the ATEM, but when connected through an HDMI to SDI converter to one of the SDI inputs, they don't work. I assumed is was a problem with the converters and not the ATEM. I was wrong. The key is that my camcorders and laptop are outputting a 1080p60 signal. The HDMI inputs can handle the difference between 1080p59.94 and 1080p60. They are more forgiving. The SDI inputs, on the other hand, have to be the exact same format as the settings on the ATEM and my HDMI to SDI converter was passing along a 1080p60 signal. I ignorantly assumed 1080p59.94 and 1080p60 were interchangeable formats -- probably because the HDMI inputs worked just fine. If you are only using up to 4 HDMI sources, you will be fine. If you want to add a 5th HDMI source via an adapter, you will need to match the exact setting on the ATEM. Laptops are out since they produce a 60Hz signal. My particular camcorders are out since they also output 1080p60 and not 1080p59.94. The solution to my particular problem was getting a device that can convert the signal to 1080p59.94. One such device is the Decimator MD-HX. Kind of a bummer that I will need a $300 device for each HDMI input that needs to be converted to SDI. And don't pay attention to BlackMagic's website. They have 1080p60 plastered all over their marketing material -- even the section describing the SDI inputs. The ATEM Television Studio HD does NOT have a 1080p60 setting, only 1080p59.94. Anyways, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out my particular problem and am hoping this review is helpful to anyone else in a similar predicament.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from No HDMI out and two noisy fans. Still USB 2... We've purchased ATEM Television Studio HD to replace its predecessor that has been working flawlessly since 2011. Our primary draw to this device was picture-in-picture feature (DVE) After unpacking the unit, we immediately have noticed two flaws that haven't been apparent from reading marketing literature: 1. Unlike ATEM Television Studio, this switch doesn't have an HDMI out port. So, if you are using Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro, Elgato, or similar capture card, you are out of luck connecting this switch to your Mac or PC. There are two ways to work around this problem. A good one will entail the replacement of your HDMI capture card with a DeckLink-series SDI card starting at $295 and up. Another option is to use the BMD's SDI to HDIM Micro Converter at $85 + SDI cable. This unit requires a separate power supply, a potential point of failure. Also, it is known to have unresolved problems with transmitting audio signal. 2. The second problem is more serious, and may become a deal breaker for many. ATEM Television Studio HD has two loud mini-fans. If you do a solo production (like our presenters), and are planning to control this unit yourself while presenting, don't bother. For a piece of equipment that is primarily intended for DIY productions, this is a surprising oversight. Adding insult to injury, our unit went into a death spiral during installation, so we are now waiting for a replacement unit. Tech. The support provided by BMD has been as outstanding as always. Product planners at BMD: please, please, please: repackage this unit into a proper rack enclosure with a silent fan, return back an HDMI out port, replace outdated USB 2 with USB 3, and you'll have a real winner on your hands. As it stands now, you are robbing your own bank by releasing a half-backed upgrade that isn't compatible with the equipment and workflow of your existing users.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ATEM Televison Studio HD Switcher Fantastic Multi use switcher, already in use saved us on a couple of live events already and used in conjunction with the Black Magic Studio Mini Hyper Deck Recorder. Just ordered the model above this as well waiting on it now
