Canon Rebel T7i overview

  • 1Description

Packing a versatile feature-set in a sleek and portable body, the EOS Rebel T7i DSLR from Canon offers advanced imaging capabilities along with a convenient range of controls and connectivity. Utilizing a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 7 image processor, the Rebel T7i is able to capture high-resolution stills and video with an expanded sensitivity range of ISO 100-51200 to suit working in a wide variety of lighting conditions. The sensor and processor combination also avails 6 fps continuous shooting for working with moving subjects. Benefitting the imaging attributes, the sensor's design also facilitates Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which uses phase-detection autofocus for quick, accurate, and smooth focusing performance when recording movies or shooting stills in live view. When shooting stills using the optical viewfinder, a 45-point all cross-type phase-detection system is used for quick and accurate focusing in a variety of shooting scenarios.

In regard to the physical design, a large 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD is featured for intuitive settings control and live view monitoring, and it uses a vari-angle design to permit easier viewing from high and low working angles. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi with NFC is available for quick and convenient pairing with a smartphone or tablet for wireless image sharing, and Bluetooth is also featured for image sharing to and remote camera control from a mobile device.

24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 7 Image Processor
Both a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 7 image processor are used to deliver high sensitivity and fast camera performance to suit both stills and video applications. A flexible native ISO 100-25600 range, which can be extended to ISO 51200, suits working in a variety of lighting conditions, and the processing capabilities minimize noise for notable clarity. The processor also contributes to a fast 6 fps continuous shooting rate for photographing fast-moving subjects.
45-Point All Cross-Type AF and Dual Pixel CMOS AF Systems
Benefitting stills shooting with the optical viewfinder, a wide-area 45-point all cross-type phase-detection autofocus system provides quick and precise focusing in difficult lighting conditions. The cross-type design of the sensors affords greater accuracy in low-contrast and mixed lighting conditions, and the broad coverage of the 45 sensors is ideal for tracking and maintaining focus on moving subjects.

When recording video or shooting in live view, a Dual Pixel CMOS AF system is employed that offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. This system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery.
Full HD 1080p Video Recording
In addition to stills recording, the T7i also supports Full HD 1080p video recording at up to 60 fps in the MP4 format with IPB compression, or 30 fps in the MOV format with ALL-I compression when making in-camera time-lapse movies. Video recording is benefitted by the inclusion of Dual Pixel CMOS AF and the Movie Servo AF focusing functions, as well as the touchscreen design of the LCD monitor for intuitive control. Movie Electronic IS is also featured to minimize the appearance of camera shake across five axes for smoother, steadier recording when shooting handheld. Additionally, an external microphone jack is incorporated in the body design for greater control over your recorded sound.
Unique to most video recording systems, the T7i also features an HDR Movie mode that can be used to achieve greater highlight and shadow detail when recording in high contrast scenarios. This mode captures two HD frames at different exposures, one normal and one underexposed, in short succession at up to 60 fps and then composites them during playback at 30 fps to create a movie with a longer-appearing dynamic range.
Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi
  • Large 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD provides an intuitive method for controlling focusing points, navigating menus, and reviewing imagery. This screen also features a vari-angle design to better enable working from high and low angles.
  • Optical pentamirror viewfinder serves a clear means for eye-level shooting.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows for easy wireless sharing of both photos and movies to a linked mobile device.
  • Bluetooth permits linking a smartphone or tablet for quick image sharing between devices as well as remote control capabilities.
  • Included LP-E17 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 820 shots per charge.

Canon Rebel T7i reviews

EOS Rebel T7i DSLR Camera (Body Only) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 34.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would definitely buy this again!!! I made the decision to upgrade to this camera 2 short weeks before shooting a wedding for a friend as my old camera (Canon T2i) wasn't cooperating so well. I was beyond nervous to get to know a new camera in such a short time but was over joyed when I realized it was so similar to my old camera just with so many added features that were a nice added touch for the wedding. I can't wait to get to know it even more and figure out all the finer details. Definitely order an extra battery if you are worried about long shoots as you will most likely have a hard time finding one when needed. I was pleasantly surprised when the battery life exceeded my expectations though!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A really great DSLR for the serious Amateur Photographer This is my third EOS Rebel. As my photography skills have grown I have updated my Rebel. The T7i has some wonderful improvements: more megapixels and the best improvement is the guided how to shoot screens that pop up on each setting. For the more advanced, you can turn this feature off. This improvement allows the less knowledgeable user a great way to learn on the go how to use the settings on the camera. It can be as manual as you want to take it to create your own wonderful images. The lighter weight of the body helps with those of us who find the bigger, heavier bodies a bit harder to control when shooting without a tripod. I absolutely love this camera. Canon quality throughout.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive features in an entry level consumer ILC Bought this camera last week. It's my first digital ILC. I have owned several P&S Canon Cameras, and have always liked the ease of use of Canon Cameras. One thing that drew me to the Rebel T7i, was that it was supposedly a very user friendly camera. So far, I would say that is the case. It has a very user friendly interface and set up. I like the fact that I can select from a menu of scene types and not worry about going full manual. But if I want to go that route, it's very simple and straight forward. I went with the 18mm-135mm lens. It was a nice compromise in lenses. I do miss having a bigger zoom capability but life is full of compromises! I like the AF function. It really does focus quite fast. I have not yet tried to do any fast action shooting yet, so can't comment on that function. But the low light capability so far has been good. Close up pics have also been very good. I will say that the camera is light but has a lot of plastic, which does concern me somewhat. I am a skier, and will plan to take this with me on the slopes in my pack. I will plan to put it in a protective case for added protection. I look forward to discovering all the capabilities of this camera. So far so good!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this camera again without batting an eye. I've owned at least 8 Canon Cameras in my lifetime. My first goes all the way back to the 1970's when I purchased a Canon AE1 (film camera), and I have progressed up through most of the 'new' offerings in the 'Rebel series' when 'Digital' changed photography forever.. I have owned 5 'Rebels' over the last 10 years, and when the new Rebel T7i, (D800), came along I researched all it's competitors and chose it to be the 'LAST' camera I will ever buy. I'm in my 70's and I know DSLR cameras pretty well. I've never been able to purchase any of the really super 'Pro' cameras, but I've been giving my new T7i a real workout, and I see very little difference it's performance along side the Pro series. I've taken almost 200 shots with the new camera, using 6 different Canon lenses, and have settled on my favourite Canon 15-85 lens for most of my work, both up close and of course it is a wonderful 'Landscape' tool. Like all new cameras there is a 'learning' curve to get the best out of it, but with the new sensor, and faster speed for resolution I've found it to be very easy to work with. Even an 'older' 18-55 lens gives good results.. I would give my blessings to anyone who wants a very good camera that they can purchase for a reasonable price, and which will give them a big bang for the buck once they get used to the many new features offered, or just by using the 'creative' modes on the camera.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Returned I actually would have luved the camera, great resolution, intuitive operation, liked the fold out screen, and it was a great step up from my EOS T1i BUT my incentive to buy was that my old 3rd party remote control failed so I bought the T7i for the wifi and bluetooth features. Whether it was Canon Connect (iPAD) or the T7i itself, operating the camera remotely was extremely frustrating with agonizing setup, then dropped connections. Had to return the camera before I threw it at a wall (even though I had Canon Support help me through the procedures). Hope Canon get it right in the next release - if I haven't bought another brand by then!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Canon camera for the money as of right now I bought it mostly for video. I don't think the 77D it's worth the price difference and I also you don't lose much comparing with 80D but you gain stabilization for video and you pay a lot less. Great autofocus for photo and video, good sensor, good high ISO, pretty light and compact. Another important advantage is the lens selection and the affordable price of the lenses comparing with other brands/options. I would have liked more customisation, especially for autofocus and video.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features I wanted a lighter option than my full frame Canon and was planning to upgrade my SL1 to the SL2. The difference in focus points for this camera convinced me to upgrade to this instead of the SL2. The extra few ounces did not make that much of a difference since combining this with the new 35 mm macro gives me a very good walk around option about 2 pounds lighter than my full frame gear. Tested this with multiple lens and great results - quick and accurate focusing and sharp results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best in the EOS Rebel Line The T7i is the best of EOS line. Its light weight , the on screen information is great. I purchased the Body Only once I confirmed that the canon lens I already have would work, and they did.
