Canon M6 Overview

  • 1Description

A well-rounded mirrorless camera for both stills and video use, the black EOS M6 from Canon offers apt imaging qualities with a refined, functional physical design. Making use of a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor, both high-resolution stills and Full HD 1080p/60 video can be recorded, while the DIGIC 7 image processor affords a wide expanded sensitivity range from ISO 100-25600, along with quick continuous shooting up to 9 fps. The sensor's design also facilitates Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which uses phase-detection autofocus for quick, accurate, and smooth performance to suit both stills and video use. Additionally, Combination IS 5-axis image stabilization also helps to realize steady, shake-free recording by minimizing the appearance of camera shake.

Alongside the imaging attributes, the EOS M6 also incorporates a large 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD for intuitive control, and the screen's design tilts to enable easier shooting from high and low working angles. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi with NFC is available for quick and convenient pairing with a smartphone or tablet for wireless image sharing, and Bluetooth is also featured for image sharing to and remote camera control from a mobile device.

24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 7 Image Processor
Both a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 7 image processor are used to deliver high sensitivity and fast camera performance to suit both stills and video applications. A flexible ISO 100-25600 range suits working in a variety of lighting conditions, and the processing capabilities minimize noise for notable clarity. The processor also contributes to a fast 7 fps continuous shooting rate, which can be quickened to 9 fps with AF lock, for photographing fast-moving subjects. Full HD 1080p video recording is also supported at up to a 60 fps frame rate. Additionally, the processor affords a fast camera startup time and short interval times between each frame for a more intuitive and efficient shooting process.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF
Dual Pixel CMOS AF offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. This system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery.
Combination IS
Combination IS uses the built-in 5-axis digital image stabilization in conjunction with lens-based image stabilization systems to effectively minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. This benefits recording while walking or moving, and can also be used in conjunction with lenses featuring optical IS for more effective overall stabilization.
Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi
  • Large 3.0" touchscreen LCD provides an intuitive method for controlling focusing points, navigating menus, and reviewing imagery. This screen also features a tilting design (180° upward, 45° downward) to better enable working from high and low angles.
  • Compatible with optional external EVF-DC2 for eye-level monitoring.
  • Five function dials can be used for intuitive settings adjustments, and each can be customized to adjust specific functions for more personalized control.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows for easy wireless sharing of both photos and movies to a linked mobile device.
  • Bluetooth permits linking a smartphone or tablet for quick image sharing between devices as well as remote control capabilities.
  • The included LP-E17 lithium-ion battery offers approximately 295 shots per charge, or 425 shots when working in Eco mode.
  • Manual pop-up flash is available for additional illumination.

    Canon M6 Reviews

EOS M6 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing functionality in a small package During my recent trip to Thailand and Cambodia, I was reminded how tired I’ve grown of lugging around my 60D with 24-105L and other lenses. Make no mistake, it’s been a great rig for me over the years as an advanced enrhusuast and have taken thousands of great pics. But the weight and hassle of transferring pics from memory card to computer had me looking for an upgrade. I’ve been admiring the Sony mirrorless products but I had a small collection of Canon lenses that I wanted to continue using which therrefore kept me captive to Canon. So I pulled the trigger on the M6 and got a great deal bundling it with the VF and adapter. I am very happy with the image quality and various controls and especially the WIFI transfer. It feels awkward attaching a big lense to this little body but I will adjust. Great camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does the job well. Getting closer to finding an interchangeable lens camera that will at least fit in a coat pocket. ?The M6 is close, but not perfect, but then, what camera is? ?I like that it has the 24mp APS-C sensor which gives very good image quality and AF with Dual Pixel CMOS. ?It doesn't have 4k video, but I could care less about that as I just use the camera for stills. ?The build is very solid and all of the more popular aspect ratios are available. ?I like that it has the 1/200 flash synchro and that the finger grip up front and thumb rest on the back allow for one-handed shooting with no problems. ?I do not like the pop-up flash and the fiddly slider on the left side you have to move to get the flash up. ?I'd rather have the flash built-in and always available without having to make a move to get it in place. ?The lens selection for the M series is still very small. ?I'd like to see a nice and FAST variable become available. ?To keep the package small, I have the 22mm f/2 lens with a protective filter and push-on lens cap. ?I dislike the original lens caps most provide as they are bulky and fiddly. ?I'd like to see USB charging capability, too. ?When using a flash unit in the hot shoe, you may have a problem with it hanging over the mode selection dial. ?You can still get the dial to turn, but it is a bit more difficult to do so than without the flash unit attached. ?One of my Custom settings uses the Manual selection with 1/200 shutter speed and f/5.6 Aperture for small group pictures inside using a flash unit. ?In other cameras, this setting produces a pretty dark, if not invisible, LCD image and you only get a momentary glimpse of the scene when the focus illuminator fires briefly. ?It's almost impossible to compose a photo this way unless you have a viewfinder on the camera, too. ?With the M6 and pop-up flash up or external flash attached to the hot shoe, the LCD image is bright and natural with the focus box highlighted and ready to turn green when focus is attained. ?This is a real PLUS for this camera. ?When I had an M5, I bought the EOS-M adapter and it worked flawlessly with EF lenses. ?However, that extra length and weight of the adapter and the EF lens chosen pretty much negated any size/weight gain. ?That would still be true with the M6 but not to the degree with the M5. ?I kept the adapter, never know when you might need it for a special situation. ?I like the M6 and will really like it if they get some more lenses in the lineup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon quality, great new experiences Really enjoying the eos M6. We gave our older Rebel to our son and wanted something smaller with fantastic image quality. I think we found it in this camera. Despite being a Canon there is still a learning curve with this relative to our previous model. I do like the fact that we can use EF lenses, albeit with an adapter, on this unit so the out-of-pocket cost is not so steep. Eventually we will incorporate more ef-m lenses into the mix. Very happy with our decision to go with B&H once again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly easy to adapt from DSLR Love the compactness and image quality of M6. Feared loss of sophisticated controls with 70D. Experienced no regrets as second camera for walk around purposes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little camera Have been thinking for some time about picking up a mirrorless camera.? Had to be a Canon, because I have too much invested in Canon glass.? So I ordered the M6 a adapter so I could use my EF-s and EF lenses.? I am having a great time playing with this and plan on taking it out for some shoots.? This is going to be a great addition to my gear and will be my main walking around camera
