Canon M6 Overview

  • 1Description

A well-rounded mirrorless camera for both stills and video use, the black EOS M6 from Canon offers apt imaging qualities with a refined, functional physical design. Making use of a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor, both high-resolution stills and Full HD 1080p/60 video can be recorded, while the DIGIC 7 image processor affords a wide expanded sensitivity range from ISO 100-25600, along with quick continuous shooting up to 9 fps. The sensor's design also facilitates Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which uses phase-detection autofocus for quick, accurate, and smooth performance to suit both stills and video use. Additionally, Combination IS 5-axis image stabilization also helps to realize steady, shake-free recording by minimizing the appearance of camera shake.

Alongside the imaging attributes, the EOS M6 also incorporates a large 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD for intuitive control, and the screen's design tilts to enable easier shooting from high and low working angles. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi with NFC is available for quick and convenient pairing with a smartphone or tablet for wireless image sharing, and Bluetooth is also featured for image sharing to and remote camera control from a mobile device.

24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 7 Image Processor
Both a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 7 image processor are used to deliver high sensitivity and fast camera performance to suit both stills and video applications. A flexible ISO 100-25600 range suits working in a variety of lighting conditions, and the processing capabilities minimize noise for notable clarity. The processor also contributes to a fast 7 fps continuous shooting rate, which can be quickened to 9 fps with AF lock, for photographing fast-moving subjects. Full HD 1080p video recording is also supported at up to a 60 fps frame rate. Additionally, the processor affords a fast camera startup time and short interval times between each frame for a more intuitive and efficient shooting process.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF
Dual Pixel CMOS AF offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. This system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery.
Combination IS
Combination IS uses the built-in 5-axis digital image stabilization in conjunction with lens-based image stabilization systems to effectively minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. This benefits recording while walking or moving, and can also be used in conjunction with lenses featuring optical IS for more effective overall stabilization.
Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi
  • Large 3.0" touchscreen LCD provides an intuitive method for controlling focusing points, navigating menus, and reviewing imagery. This screen also features a tilting design (180° upward, 45° downward) to better enable working from high and low angles.
  • Compatible with optional external EVF-DC2 for eye-level monitoring.
  • Five function dials can be used for intuitive settings adjustments, and each can be customized to adjust specific functions for more personalized control.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows for easy wireless sharing of both photos and movies to a linked mobile device.
  • Bluetooth permits linking a smartphone or tablet for quick image sharing between devices as well as remote control capabilities.
  • The included LP-E17 lithium-ion battery offers approximately 295 shots per charge, or 425 shots when working in Eco mode.
  • Manual pop-up flash is available for additional illumination.
EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Lens
Included with the camera body is the versatile standard zoom EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens, which provides a 24-72mm equivalent focal length range. Three aspherical elements help to control chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range and an optimized lens placement works to reduce flare and ghosting. An Optical Image Stabilizer works to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 3.5 stops for sharper handheld shooting and an STM stepping motor provides fast, smooth, and near-silent autofocus performance.

Canon M6 Reviews

EOS M6 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 15-45mm Lens (Black) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Camera I was looking for a lightweight easy to pack and carry backup camera for when I shoot travel. I took a risk in the new M6 and took it to Paris for a workout. I was excellent, easy to use flip viewer, nice simple lens, and most important a great file size. I have now processed the images in Lightroom and found that even the higher ISO images are acceptable. I also bought the add on viewfinder and it was perfect to shoot with and to avoid having to put on reading glasses all the time. (a bit pricey but worth it to me.) I am attaching some images that show various ISO's from 200 to 6400 so you can see the quality. But what you need to have is a RAW file to play with so I would suggest that you try to get one to see how nice the image quality is.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exactly what I ordered I am a travel and street photographer. I have no interest in the SLR style camera. What I was looking for was good image quality and the APSc size and weight. Over some other brands, the current Canon lenses are few, but the ones available are very good. I keep the 22 on 90% of the time. I like making believe this camera is a cell-phone and the lack of the EVF allows me to look like a tourist to the world and shoot with good control, reasonable dynamic range and excellent optics. The software and GPS functionality is reliable in my usage. I like a quick image transfer now and a delayed deliberative look on the computer later. I have enough manual controls, would like a bit more customization to the exposure triangle with a minimum shutter speed, but it seems to favor 1/60 as slow, so, I can make do. I really appreciate the light weight lenses for walking and travel. Would I like a piece of L glass, sure, but, for all my printing and book making, I have not found it necessary. It's taken me a couple of months to adapt, but this kit is coming with me all over Europe and North America this year.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from works amazingly well this camera is amazing for what it can do. dual pixel autofocus is spot on every time! i really enjoy using this camera for family videos. i dont see why i cant use this for pro wedding videos. it really is that good with full manual controls in video mode. why not 5 stars? well...this is 2017 and canon still refuses to have 4k and slo mo is only up to 60 frames per seconds. absolutely ridiculous.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Amazing video quality and Picture! Pros: It is compact, produces amazing picture, video is a step from Canon eos M3 which has a sluggish autofocus and unpleasant video quality, user friendly, fast autofocus, sharp, and captures images really fast which is great for sports. Cons: The built doesn't feel as sturdy like the eos m3 (the top and bottom feels like cheap plastic), the dials for different modes is to firm that is sort of painful to switch from manual to video mode, the handle where you rest your fingers is not big enough and whats worst is the metal piece to connect the strap gets in the way when I'm holding the camera (I drop the camera because I can't get a firm grip!), the buttons on the back feels cheap and sounds hollow when you press it, tripod mount needs to be repositioned so it doesn't block the battery entrance/SD card which is the same problem as the M3, and finally the exposure when I press the record button at a manual mode is not the same exposure like in realtime picture live view, so the video tends to be overexpose or underexpose additionally as a cherry on top it takes a couple of seconds for the change to take affect (if possible can there an update to fix this to have the exposure constant from picture live view and video. ) Now this is a matter of preference, but I enjoy having a physical zoom in and out button. It's a great camera but how the body was designed just contains a lot of flaws.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most Amazing Camera !! I have owned many DSLR’s in my professional production business for broadcast, event, commercial, docu, and cinema, and beyond the shadow of a doubt this small lightweight, easy to use camera is the first breath of air I’ve had in a long time. It’s not like, but IS, a mini DSLR semi-pro camera which amazing images out of an extremely small package. Because If it’s portability I can carry two of these, 4 to 6 EF, EF-S, and EM lenses, charging, extra batteries, 600RT flash, SD cards, carry straps, and so much more than space to list, in the regular Canon Backpack. I recently shot a rock music video that would have taken me 2-3 days with my 5D3 or 6D and would have been spent. With this lil bugger I shot the thing in one day and had energy to spare using all three genre of lenses and touching the screen for rack focus was amazing. This is now my only photo-video camera at the moment and when a client says, “that’s kinda small isn’t it,” I simply respond, “newer technology packs a lot of power in snap packages.” Once you try mirrorless you’ll never go back. I won’t and Canon May be late to the game with mirrorless but they did it right with the M6, hands down. Get one in your hands and you won’t let it go. I’ve doubled my productions with it because I don’t need an assistant now. I carry all my gear “on board” including audio. Thanks Canon and Thanks B&H for helping me with questions and they did not pay me nor coerce me to give this review.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply - very simply - amazing. Extreme ease of use. Good built ( altough Mlens are plasticky) and great images. I use it for construction sites and trips. Quite happy about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great deal! I cannot believe the deal I got on this thing. ?It was on sale, and with all the add-ons, I got a screaming deal. ?I'm a Canon user and love that I can use all my EF lenses. ?The photos produced by this thing are amazing. ?Coming from a 5DMkII, it feels like a solid point-and-shoot. ?But this thing packs some serious power into a small package. ?Lens is pretty nice as well. ?Looking forward to trying out the 22mm lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WHAT A CAMERA !!! I've come to this camera from the Canon 5D Mk 2 and 3, 6D, 7D and Canon 80D arena and I have to say this camera has 'knocked my socks off' with images that look absolutely amazing. ?I've shot about 150-200 pictures thus far and just today about 50+ professional videos for a national release music video next month. ?This is the first DSLR that I've shot completely in Manual because it is so easy to adjust from the thumbwheels and back wheel that are customizable from the easy Canon menus. ?You can actually have Shutter, Aperture, and ISO all at your fingertips without clicking a switch or punching a button, just thumb rotate thumbwheels. ? ?I love the thing !!! The lens is also amazing. ?The autofocus is lock on and follows the best of anything I've ever seen thus far and with the EF-M adapter, I can use my Canon EF and EF-S glass on this little bugger; plus, while the auto focus is a little slower on the EF primes I have, I'm sure it's the lens speed and not the M6. ?My 'nifty fifty' mounted on this camera sure looks sweet with the EF-M adapter and holds auto focus and rack focus with just a touch on the screen. I also purchased the EVF-2 and that is the sweetest thing yet. ?I can leave it off or go outside in bright sun and push the bugger on and when I hold my eye up to it, the scene goes off and EVF is spot on as a VF on a video camera. Today I shot a cin? project and other than it looked small, no one burped for a moment and because of its' weight and size, I shot 6.5 hours in a row and still wasn't tired. ?This THE camera I been looking for more years than I can express. Two shortcomings, not enough M primes or wide aperture zooms; and, more menu options for function buttons. ?Oh, and the autofocus distance sensor/laser should be above the lens not over on the front and side where ya tend to put your hand. When more M primes come out I'll grab them fast along with another M6.
