FiiO X5 overview

  • 1Description

The Titanium X5 (3rd Gen) from FiiO is a portable high-resolution audio player and USB DAC for audio enthusiasts. The unit features an audiophile-grade architecture and premium components capable of playing files up to 32-bit/384 kHz in a variety of formats including native DSD, DXD, WAV, WMA, ALAC, FLAC, APE, AIFF, and more.

The X5 utilizes a pair of AKM AK4490EN DAC chips coupled to two dual-channel OPA1642 LPF chips and an OPA426 amplification chip for improved dynamic performance. Dual crystal oscillators ensure the lowest jitter and highest precision playback of music at any sample rate, reducing conversion artifacts.

The player offers a 3.5mm single-ended headphone output and a separate 3.5mm line out/digital (coaxial) output. A 2.5mm balanced headphone output lets you use the headphones of your choice. The third-edition X5 has 32GB of onboard memory, which can be augmented with two microSDXC card slots. The 3400mAh lithium-ion polymer battery provides up to 10 hours of playback under normal conditions. The Android-based user interface offers five unique themes, while the 2.4" IPS color touchscreen display offers easy navigation. The 10-band graphic EQ and the 120-step digital volume control allow for custom-tailored sound and levels.

The X5-III body is made from No. 180 zirconium sand with stainless steel accents, with a dot matrix pattern on the front and a star pattern on the back. The player ships with a USB cable, coaxial digital adapter cable, a clean case, a leatherette case, and a pre-applied tempered glass screen protector.

Dual DACs
The X5 3rd gen has one 32-bit AKM AK4490EN DAC per channel, each of which supports all PCM and DSD formats. AKM's VELVET SOUND low-distortion architecture includes digital filtering with 32-bit processing for accurate sound reproduction.
Dual Crystal Oscillators
Two crystal oscillators, one for DSD/44.1/88.2/176.4/352.8 kHz sampling rates and the other for 48/96/192/384 kHz sampling rates, for reduced jitter and sampling rate conversion artifacts and improved clock accuracy.
Four-Way Low Pass Filtering
Two dual-channel OPA1642 low-pass filtering chips and dual custom OPA426 amplification chips combine to provide up to 300mW under a 32-Ohm load and improved capacitive load ability.
Dual Headphone Jacks
Along with a 3.5mm line-out/coaxial-out jack, the third-generation X5 has a standard single-ended 3.5mm headphone jack and a 2.5mm balanced TRRS headphone jack.
Wireless Connectivity
The third-gen X5 has 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi for connecting to wireless LANs and Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX and DLNA for connecting to other devices.
USB DAC
The micro-USB port enables use as a USB DAC for your computer or as a transport, outputting digital signals to an external DAC.
Android 5.1 Lollipop and Pure Music Mode
The X5's version of Android 5.1 has been customized by FiiO with a new audio software architecture to prevent third-party Android apps from automatically converting sample rates.

The player can also be switched into Pure Music Mode, which switches off all apps other than the main music player for smooth operation and improved sound.
Volume Knob
The physical volume knob is recessed slightly to avoid changes in your pocket and has 45° grooves for quickly moving through 120 steps of volume control.
Battery and Charging
The 3.8V 3400mAh battery lasts for approximately 10 hours when using the 3.5mm headphone jack and approximately 8 hours when using the 2.5mm jack. It can be charged at the standard BC 1.2 USB rate but also at 9 or 12 V rapid charging at a rate of up to 1.2A for a complete fill in as little as two hours.

    FiiO X5 reviews

X5 (3rd Gen) Portable High-Resolution Audio Player (Titanium) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Dap! The x5 gen 3 sounds phenomenal! I use it along with my fiio e12a amp because it produces a thicker sound. It gets loud enough with no distortion to blow out your ear holes lol. I stream spotify with this device and am loving the sound even though it is not lossless. I also have some lossless files on it and it will blow you away. Battery life seems quite good and am satisfied with the time between charges. It also charges extremely fast. I have had no issues with the os and have not had any lagtime or stuttering which thought might be an issue with having 1 gig of ram. I don't regret my purchase and whole heartedly recommend this dap. Thx for reading!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best x5 yet! Great DAP to own. Lots of capabilities. It was fun with the original x5 which I still own. The addition of bluetooth is a plus for times when you don't want earbuds in your ears or a line out to speakers. The addition of android and the ability to stream music and even some video with apps is a huge plus. Very cool to be able to switch between pure music mode and android mode. Sound seems to be much more detailed than the original x5. Paired with a portable amp like the oppo sounds even better. A great upgrade that will bring me many hours of enjoyment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing DAP I started with the X1ii then bought the X3II and gave the X1 to a coworkers daughter. Bought an X5ii and gave the X3 to my wife. Two days ago bought the X5iii. The x5ii is my knock around player now.The X5iii is so much more advanced then the previous three. One review said the X5ii was like a steam engine train and the X5iii was like a bullet train. They were right. It's got a gazillion options and sounds awesome. I have it stacked with an A5 and it not only sounds superb it looks pretty darn cool. So far I'm just running it in pure music mode and learning the Android OS. Build quality is flawless and it feels robust and sturdy. I ran ipods till I got into Fiio. I really havn't seen anything else with the quality and value you get with Fiio. And as usual B&H is awesome. When I decided to buy the X5iii I got the next day delivery and B&H got it right to me. At first I questioned myself for buying it but two days later theres no way I'd part with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Fantastic DAP from FiiO After having first experienced the previous FiiO X5-ll edition in my system and the sonic improvement it immediately created when playing both Hi-Res downloads and my own ripped CD's, I ordered the new FiiO X5-lll Player as soon as it was available for pre-order from B&H, and received it a few days ago, with the usual terrific Notifications and Shipping / Delivery Service. I have always liked the sound of FiiO DAP's with the E12A or A5 Amps, and can now only state that the New X5-lll created very significant incremental improvements in the sonic transparency of all the music played. After burning-in the X5-lll with alternating white and pink noise programs for only 48 hours, and then performing some critical listening over several hours... I can unequivocally state that there were greater, and very subtle, sonic improvements to the soundstage, clarity, detail and musicality of each album played; albeit not equally for every album, which I must attribute to the initial recording parameters. Nonetheless, the overall improvement in the entire system and, more important to me, the musicality of all Hi-Res albums played...from Classic Rock, Jazz and Classical, to live cast recordings of Broadway musicals and accoustic performances by popular artists...has been nothing short of Amazing. I would make the X5-lll the centerpiece of any system, regardless of type, or cost, as it will most certainly create sonic improvements in, and the renewed enjoyment of, the music listening experience.....at a very significant Value / Price for the DAP. The FiiO X5-lll is now indespensible for truly appreciating the musicality in my Hi-Res system; and the continued Service and Delivery process from B&H is Outstanding. Very Highly Recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy the next new X5 if it fits my musics. I pulled a trigger for the X5 III because I have owned the original one. This is a very musical DAP but not lack of details and bass compared to Onkyo DP-X1 I owe which has more body on balanced but not as smooth as the X5 III. It is matched pretty well with IE800 on SE and Shure SE535 balanced 2.5mm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly recommend it! Well-constructed, with fantastic sound. This was my replacement for my old iPod classic, and there is simply no comparing the sonic quality. The X5 3rd gen is so much superior. It even makes the same MP3s sound better, but I'm loading mine up with flac and cue files on 200gb cards.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so - great! My first foray in the high resolution player. After many days of research, it came down to two. The AK 300 and FIIO X5 (gen 3). At the end of the day, they are very similar, as I had the chance to play with both. Maybe the price of the FIIO made my decision easier (cheaper) but they perform what they need to do - play music in high resolution! Overall a very nice product. If I had one tiny complaint is that you really need to figure some things out yourself because the directions are not as clear as the should be.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product; Instructions Critical Omission Excellent quality sound; high storage capacity; good build quality and convenient controls. Instructions accompaning the device do not contain a picture showing correct insertion of the miniSD card into the tiny card carrier. You can find a picture showing the correct insertion on the FIIO website about two menu screens down. Find the forgoing illustration first before loading a miniSD card and avoid destroying the card (in my case a 256 GB card; ouch!). I have not found a Nilon manual that does not provide an illustration of proper orientation of avcard insertion. Fortunately, I did not damage the slot; a credit to the build quality. The variety of FIIO music player models and successive generations of improved versions indicate a corporate committment to this product area and a committment to making regular improvements. I use this player with a Bowers & Wilkens P5 series 2 headphone and I am very please with the quality of sound from hi resolution FLAC files.
