Fujinon 18-55mm overview

  • 1Description

The Fujinon MK18-55mm T2.9 Lens in E-Mount is a lightweight cine-style zoom lens for E-mount cameras with a Super 35mm-sized sensor. It features a mechanical design with three independent lens control rings: focus, iris, and zoom. Each ring incorporates a cine-style gear with a 0.8 MOD for interfacing with standard cine -style lens accessories. The focus ring features approximately 200° of rotation, which provides room or precise focus pulls, and the iris is clickless, enabling smooth iris pulls. The lens also incorporates a macro mode for close focusing capabilities.

The lens is color matched to other Fujinon lenses such as the HK, ZK, and XK series, which enables smooth intercutting between lenses. The 85mm front enables use with many cine-style matte boxes via use of optional step up rings (rings not included). The lens weighs only 2.16 pounds, which is fairly light for a cinema zoom that holds focus and aperture throughout the focal length range. It is designed for camera's with a Sony E-mount, so it has a short flange focal distance, but the lens allows for flange focal distance adjustment so you can fine tune it to the camera you are using the lens on.

T2.9 to T22 aperture with 9 iris blades for attractive bokeh
The 28.5mm diameter image circle covers the 3-perf super 35 format with a 16:9 aspect ratio
Industry standard 0.8 film pitch gears for focus, zoom, and iris control
The gear rings positions for focus, zoom, and iris are located at the same position on both lenses in the MK series, making switching between the two zooms quick as you don't have to adjust the position of lens accessories
Both lenses in the MK series have the same weight and length so here is no need to rebalance your camera when you change from one lens to the other
200° focus barrel rotation
No shims are required to adjust the flange focal distance as this lens has a built-in adjustment mechanism
Macro focus function available

    Fujinon 18-55mm reviews

    MK18-55mm T2.9 Lens (Sony E-Mount) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Friends for the FS5 Went ahead and grabbed this plus the 50-135 shortly after they were both released and all don't regret it at all. I saved this review until I got at least 100 hours out of the lenses and here I am- and have not been disappointed. Incredibly sharp, hits critical focus points and holds them, the ease of swapping lenses without moving gears around is beautiful, the macro is amazing and incredibly useful, and being par focal is something that really takes these over the top. Obviously, they aren't going to compare to some other high-end zoom lenses, but when they're 1/3 of the price, with 2 lenses covering focal lengths of 3-4 other lenses, worth every penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great match for FS7 I prefer manual lens and do not us SLR glass since it is not parfocal. This lens is parfocal, low cost, sharp, smooth, light, 2.9, and 18-55 is perfect for a lot of my shooting. Just used on a two day job and with FS7 using SLOG which I always use. The results are stunning. If you own a FS7 buy it you won't be disappointed. Next for me is the 50-135 and the 18-110 for handheld work. Match those with my Dulcos 11-16PL and I have a great set.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Meh... I really wanted to love this lens but it's no where near a Cabrio. The lens is plastic and feels cheap, focus throw is too short and I found it hard to hit critical focus. No servo and no image stabilization. The Sony 18-110 is a better lens for the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for the price I really believe this is a difficult lens to review.... Hits the price point where DSLR shooters are interested, but also experienced DoP's using Cabrio's and Large PL cinema zoom lenses are interested too. If you're use to SLR glass, this can introduce you to the convenience of a cinema built lens. A DoP would say this lens fall short of its higher end accessors. Using lenses in both production realms, I found a great nitch for this lens. This lightweight Fuji works perfectly on my Movi Pro paired with an FS5 and F55 (with Duclos adaptor.) Extremely sharp glass. Would say my only complaint is that it does flare quite a bit. Have to control that. Now with the native E-mount Sony Venice released, I'd love to see them release a full frame version of these lenses. Keeping them lightweight and cost effective would eat up that market space. Nice work Fuji.
