HGST 0S04005 overview

  • 1Description

Designed with an MTBF rating of 1 million hours for use in 24/7 always-on environments, the 4TB Deskstar 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS Drive Kit from HGST features a 4TB storage capacity, a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, a 128MB cache, a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, and a 3.5" form factor. While this drive is intended for use in NAS and business-critical environments, it is also suitable for general use at home and can store files such as music, movies, photos, documents, and more. Furthermore, Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS) helps anticipate drive disturbances and counteracts them, thus improving performance under strenuous conditions.

General Features

Rotational Vibration Safeguard
Rotational Vibration Safeguard has its own vibration sensors placed at the edges of the hard disk and on the edges of the drive's circuit board. If these sensors feel a vibration rippling through the drive, they can feed forward a signal to the actuator that controls the head's position. The actuator them compensates for the disturbance, counteracting it with an equal and opposite force. In this way, the head is able to "ride" the vibration and stay on track.

    HGST 0S04005 reviews

4TB Deskstar 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS Drive Kit is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from I WOULD NOT buy this product again In my original Synology Diskstation order I had to choose between the WD Red and this Deskstar Disks. After chatting with B&H I opted for the Deskstar. I setup the Diskstation when it arrived and noticed it was very LOUD when writing data. When I asked Synology customer support about it they said it totally depended on the disks used. I decided to exchange the Deskstar disks for the WD Red and am SO GLAD I did! I cannot hear the WD at all when the unit is writing data, whereas the DIskstation disks were so loud and distracting. Anyone choosing discs for storage devices I would not recommend these - opt for the the WD red instead!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far excellent! Need to truly give the drive time though.. I've written tons of reviews before, then started realizing, we write reviews (at least in my case) before we get some use out of the product first. Additionally this HGST should be very solid based on the reviews I've read. Other drive manufacturers I've bought over the past 3+ yrs. have high failure rates, based on my experience and from what I have been reading. Truly I am exhausted buying those That begin with an S, and end up replacing them 13 months later. Hard drives used to last for years and years. So I've been buying HGST drives and will continue. This drive runs a little hot, so I am giving it 4 stars. Thanks!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not Sure I purchased the Deskstars to upgrade a server that had been running Western Digital Red drives. My research seemed to indicate a lot of server farms are using he Hitachi's drives with excellent reliability. The speed is also an upgrade from 5400 rpm to 7200 rpm. I haven't been running them long - so far no errors but they are extremely LOUD! In some settings it wont matter but if you plan on installing them somewhere you want quiet, think twice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Noisy, but does what it's supposed to Bought this as a backup drive to use in a BlacX docking station. Supposed to have excellent reliability ratings. Had seen other reviews that it is noisy- it is, compared to my seagate drive, but it works and does what it's supposed to

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect Nicely priced, fast, and it does what it's mainly suppose to do. But it can be a little bit 'expressive'. It needs to tell the world what it's doing. Taking it positively, it can be good in a sense that I know that it's doing its work and it does it so well. Furthermore, I don't put my NAS in my bedroom so it's fine. Would I buy it again over the "iron" and "red"? Yes I would if they keep the price as low as it is now.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good hard drive, but too loud for home use I put these hard drives in a QNAP NAS and, while they work great for storage purposes, the noise profile is too loud for "under the TV" application. If I could do it again, I would definitely pick up WD Reds (or Red Pros) as anecdotal reviews suggest they are much quieter.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Drive failed in two weeks Bought this drive to use in my Newertech Voyager drive dock for video projects. I figured a brand new 4tb drive was pretty secure. However, it failed after two weeks. I've been able to recover the project using Data Rescue (thank you Neil B of B&H Live Chat for the recommendation) but cannot recommend this drive as it failed right away. I should mention...shortly before it died there was a lightning storm very close to my home. We never lost power, and I shut the computer down to protect it, but it's possible this may have had an impact.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great drives - a little noisy I have purchased 12 of these drives over the past year or so. I have been using them in a RAID config on a couple of Synology NAS systems that I own. They have been solid drives that spin and write 24/7 and I have not had any issues with any of them. I like the speed of the drives and the extra sensors that these drives use. I have not had any issues, so far. They are a little noisy, but that doesn't bother me at all.
