Dell UP3218K overview

  • 1Description

With a 7680 x 4320 8K resolution, the UP3218K 32" 16:9 8K IPS Monitor from Dell is designed to provide a detailed picture. In addition to the 8K resolution this monitor features a 33.2-million-pixel resolution along with a pixel density of 280 ppi. If that's not enough, Dell has ensured this monitor is suited to handle color accurate work as it covers multiple industry standard color spaces including 100% Adobe RGB, 100% sRGB, 100% Rec. 709, and 98% DCI-P3. To back the numerous color spaces, the UP3218K provides a color palette of 1.07 billion colors. This Dell monitor even comes calibrated on Adobe RGB and sRGB to an accuracy of Delta-E less than 2 right out of the box.

The act of viewing the display has also been taken into consideration as this Dell 8K monitor comes equipped with Dell's InfinityEdge feature for a virtually borderless viewing experience. That borderless viewing experience is made easier on the eyes thanks to flicker-free technology and ComfortView, which helps to reduce blue light emissions.

Setup is simple as the Dell UP3218K 8K Monitor comes equipped with dual DisplayPort inputs and three USB 3.0 ports. In addition to the 8K resolution found on this display, users also benefit from a 1300:1 contrast ratio for dynamic picture quality, a 400 cd/m² brightness rating, and 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles to see the screen from virtually any position.

Enhanced Visual Experience
This 31.5" Dell 8K Monitor features Dell PremierColor, designed to provide accurate colors and smooth gradation to create more realistic images and virtually invisible pixels. Additionally, this 8K display comes equipped with a 33.2-million-pixel resolution and a pixel density of 280 ppi.

    Dell UP3218K reviews

    UP3218K 31.5" 16:9 8K IPS Monitor is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Power issues and dead pixels Same thing happened to me Marc. The first unit I received did not power up. The replacement they sent me worked really good for about 5 minutes and then I got a vertical line as well. I also had the back light glow as well on the corners! I sent both back. I was disappointing. The resolution was great!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from As perfect as money can buy The image is perfect. I upgraded from a 5K iMAC running Windows in Bootcamp. Comparing the two monitors side by side, I am not really able to see the difference due to the higher resolution. Perhaps people with better eye sight could see it, but they would have to get close. The reason I upgraded is because a 27 monitor does not have enough room to show all the documents I work with simultaneously at a comfortable font size. If someone made a 32 monitor with pixel density around 220, I would rather get that monitor. In fairness to Dell though, this monitor is identical to 4 laptop screens glued together (say the Dell XPS 15 which has 15.6 4K screen), and people do not usually complain about laptops or smart phones having excessive resolution. The design and build quality are outstanding. One complaint I have is the coating - it is great in terms of colors etc, but is quite reflective. Apple came up with dark coating for their retina displays years ago, which is less reflective and just as good in terms of image quality. So I don't see an excuse to have overly-reflective coating on such a high-end monitor. You get used to it in a few days though. The dual 1.4 display port cables work fine for the most part. I can get to the BIOS settings (on a Dell workstation) and see the Windows splash screen. However the transition from the splash screen to the login screen sometimes does not work and the monitor goes dark -- in which case you have to turn it off and on. A more serious issue is that after Windows wakes up from sleep, the monitor does not detect the signal, no matter what I try (I am using Quadro P5000). My solution is to reboot when I start working, and keep the computer on. The monitor itself goes into power saving mode and wakes up fine, as long as the computer does not go to sleep. So there are issues, but once you start working, it just works and looks great.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great at first... When this display arrived - it was an epiphany. Easily the most impressive jump in screen technology I have witnessed in 20 years. However, after just 4 weeks, a line of dead pixels appeared down the middle of the screen. Since I am based in Australia - this was a major nuisance. B&H were very accommodating though and paid for return shipping. I did however lose the customs fees and original shipping when I was refunded - about $1,000 in total which is quite upsetting. It reminded me that being an early adopter of new technology has its risks. My unit also had noticeable backlight glow in the corners - very noticeable on a black background but it didn't bother me too much in use. The resolution was so overwhelming that I was prepared to put up with it - but - but definitely a disappointing surprise at this level of display (compare is the top Eizos where uniformity is amazing). Whilst 8K worked out of the box on my PC - there were some reboots where the monitor stayed blank and seemed to lock-up - not recognising the input signal. It was a bit hit and miss and sometimes required an additional reboot. My Macs would display 4K, but not 8K - not even the latest (2017) fully specced MacBook Pro could achieve 8K via two DVI to USB-C cables. It was clear that it was only able to output via one cable at a time rather than integrate the two. I also found the display too glossy - reflections during the day were more of a nuisance than I would like for a monitor at this price point. I am a professional user with 20 years of high-end monitor experience. Whilst the resolution is phenomenal and clearly the future standard - the display still has some rough edges. I will likely wait for Eizo or Apple to enter the 8K race before buying another 8K display. Well done Dell though for bringing this to market.
