Beachtek DXA-ALEXA Overview

Designed primarily for the ALEXA Mini, but compatible with cameras such as the RED DSMC2, the Beachtek DXA-ALEXA is a low-noise preamplifier which connects directly to your camera, capturing audio through its transformer-balanced inputs and obviates the need for external syncing. The preamp itself sports a 100 dB dynamic range, and the construction of its inputs ensure galvanic isolation, as well as high common mode rejection in the face of common obstacles, such as electromagnetic interference.

The DXA-ALEXA provides dual gain controls which are detented for precise settings, as well as high/low switches for microphone matching, switchable 48V phantom power for condenser mics, and easy-to-read LED level indicators which give you a good picture of your overall sound; green signifies a level between -40 and +16 dBu, yellow takes you all the way to +4, and red gives you an indication of overs.

A carbon fiber chassis is relatively lightweight at under a pound, while weather-resistant top-panel switches ensure reliability in wide variety of conditions. For outputs, the DXA-ALEXA gives you a balanced 5-pin XLR output that can connect directly to 5-pin LEMO inputs. You can also route signal to other recorders by means of an unbalanced 3.5mm jack. Connections are provided for headphone and loopback monitoring as well. The preamp itself draws power from your existing rig by means of a 2-pin LEMO connection. Thanks to the preamp’s three threaded 1/4"-20 holes, you can mount this unit on the rails of third-party brackets, though a bracket has been included for mounting to camera cages, such as the ARRI ALEXA Mini camera cage.

This is a very nice compact fit unit that works great with the Arri Mini LF when using an onboard shot gun microphone or a wireless receiver onboard the camera rig. Simple and easy to work.

Bought it to run sound into my Alexa, it is small, the low noise preamps sound great, it works! A little on the expensive side for what it does, but no complaints.

Do you need any special attenuator cables to make it work with the Canon R5C or will a 5-pin XLR to 3.5mm work?
Asked by: Joshua
You could use an XLR 5-pin female to 3.5mm TRS male cable like the Wooden Camera Single 3.5mm TRS to 5-Pin Female XLR - 18" (B&H # WO808010) to send line level audio from the Beachtek DXA-ALEXA Low-Noise Preamplifier to the Canon EOS R5 C Mirrorless Cinema Camera. As another option, you can use the 3.5mm mic output on the DXA-ALEXA to send mic level audio to the camera's 3.5mm TRS input.

question

This Beachtek unit has such a better layout than most of Beachteks other models, not to mention its very aesthetically pleasing. Its a little disappointing that they specify this unit as being engineered for one or two cameras in particular. Would this also be usable with a DSLR like the Canon 5Dmk3 or a small video camera like the Canon XC-10? Or are the higher quality components advantages only realized with the Alexa or a RED unit? Thanks in advance

It was designed withe ALEXA in mind: Line Out: 5-pin balanced output at +4 dBu.But there is no reason it could not be used with other cameras: Mic Out: 3.5 mm unbalanced auxiliary stereo output

How do you monitor the signal on a Canon R5C with this unit?
Asked by: Joshua
In order to monitor audio through the Beachtek DXA-ALEXA Low-Noise Preamplifier, you will need to connect the camera's 3.5mm headphone output to the 3.5mm return jack (labeled "RTN" on the DXA-ALEXA, which is next to the unit's headphone jack (labeled "PHONES"), and then connect your headphones directly to the DXA-ALEXA.
