IRIX 15mm f/2.4 overview

  • 1Description

An impressively wide prime lens, the Canon EF-mount 15mm f/2.4 Firefly Lens from Irix meshes an advanced optical design with a lightweight, durable physical construction. The expansive field of view is complemented by a sophisticated optical layout that utilizes low dispersion, aspherical, and high-refractive glass elements, as well as a Neutrino coating, to render imagery with low distortion, controlled spherical and chromatic aberrations, high contrast, and natural color rendering.

In addition to the imaging performance, this 15mm f/2.4 utilizes a manual focus design for fine-tuned control, and incorporates a unique positive focus lock to secure the focusing position at any point for consistent, repeatable shooting. As the Firefly version of this focal length, this lens is also distinguished by a lightweight ABS plastic exterior, printed lens markings, and weather-sealing about the lens housing to permit working in trying environmental conditions.

The Firefly version of the 15mm f/2.4 lens features a lightweight ABS plastic exterior construction that is sealed against moisture and dust along the main body of the lens. The Firefly construction also incorporates a rubber focus ring for improved grip and control, and has printed focus distance and depth of field scales to aid working with pre-focusing and hyperfocal focusing techniques.
Wide-angle prime designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, this lens can also be used on APS-C models where it provides a 24mm equivalent focal length.
Two aspherical, three high-refractive index, and two extra-low dispersion elements are featured within the optical design to limit both spherical and chromatic aberrations, as well as color fringing and distortion, for improved clarity, sharpness, and even illumination.
A Neutrino coating has been applied to limit lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity.
Manual focus designed is benefitted by a positive focus lock mechanism to secure your focus position at any point to limit unwanted shifting of focus.
A hard click stop indicates the infinity position on the focus ring for easy use in low-visibility conditions.
Large depth of field scale benefits using hyperfocal and pre-focus techniques.
Front of lens has 95mm-diameter filter threads and the rear of the lens accepts 30 x 30mm cut gel filters to lessen the likelihood of vignetting.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to smooth bokeh.

IRIX 15mm f/2.4 reviews

15mm f/2.4 Firefly Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enjoying this lens. Lens was bigger than I had expected but fits perfectly on my 6d and feels ergonomically correct. Build quality is superb. Smooth focus. Clicks in at infinity and is accurate. Very sharp lens out to the corners. Comparable too my L glass and maybe even a touch better. Distortion is very well controlled. Little bit of vignetting but not bad. Easily fixable in post processing. Not real impressed with the hood as it shows in the corners. Might have to take the Dewalt grinder n do a bit of customizing. Purchased a circular polarizer and nd filter to help shade things a bit. Definitely not disappointed in my decision to purchase this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As good as my L glass For the price I don't think this lens can be beat. Amazed at how it arrived, a metal box inside an outer cardboard one, foam supports and a nice lens case, even my L glass didn't have as much care in the packaging. Packaging aside, the quality of images from this lens is awesome, infinity focus lock is spot on and needs no adjustment. Some slight distortion in the corners but easily corrected in PS or LR. Used it on both full frame and APS-C Canon cameras and absolutely love this lens. Time for the rain to stop and clouds to disappear so I can get out and shoot some landscapes and astro images.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loving it! I purchased this lens as I was looking for a replacement astro lens for Rokinon 14 mm F2.8. Without bad mouthing the Rokinon too much, it just wasn't sharp enough. I came across the IRIX lens while reading a review on this site. I'll keep it short and sweet - the lens is tack sharp shooting wide open from end to end with very minimal if any detectable distortion and the locking into infinity mechanism is a nice touch. Between that and the fact that infinity focus was spot on, I give this lens as high a rating & recommendation as I can!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprising Image Quality, Great Design I got this lens to replace the original Samyang 14mm for five reasons: 1. The severe moustache curvalinear distortion of the Samyang was a problem, requiring special software to correct. The Irix distortion is moderate and easily corrected via photoshop RAW (9.1) 2. The Manual stop down of the Samyang w/0 preset stops was also awkward and difficult due to dark viewfinder image when stopped down. The Irix only stops down for the exposure meaning you always focus wide open. 3. The image quality is very good even at the corners, comparable to much more expensive lenses. 4. The removable lens hood with port AND being able to use 95mm filters 5. All this for $400.00 (OK more after Canadian currency exchange) makes this lens an exceptionally good deal!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good design for the money Pro's: Feels great even for plastic, looks great, nice images at night at 2.4. Basically no distortion, images look really good straight out of camera. The protrusion on the focus ring is really nice for moving the ring because the plastic can be slick. Comes with 2 rear caps, a nice touch, I leave the spare in my walk around backpack. Con's: the infinity click point is not even close to correct, so actually finding infinity is slightly awkward because you have a false positive, I wish they would have calibrated it correctly or just taken out the click point all together. It is nice that you can change the click point, maybe one day I'll get around to it? The electronic connections are really nice for focus confirm, I would have considered the Laowa 12mm but it doesnt have any electronic connection. I basically view this lens as a poor mans Sigma 14mm, and for over a thousand dollars less I think its really great. I have a 24mm as well and the difference between 24 and 15mm is enormous, really nice for wide angle time lapse in addition to astro shooting.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Quality Control My focus ring simply and inexplicably stopped working 2 weeks into ownership. The lens completely lost the ability to focus anywhere near infinity. No customer service response from Irix.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great lens, that does not last... Let me begin by saying the 15mm Irix Firefly is a great lens for the money you are paying. I enjoyed the crisp images that this lens produced. The lens had a vignetting effect as the aperture got around 3.0. This was a great lens though. As soon as a month and a half I noticed that the front most part of the lens was loose, and was able to be twisted very slightly, independently of the mount of the lens. Now, after a mere four months of use, the lens has degraded so much so that the same front part of the lens is now beginning to pull away from the bottom of the lens and mount laterally, not just radially. Currently I can see a decent gap at this area of the lens, which I assume means the weather sealing is not going to work. On top of this, the location of the infinity focal length has changed in relation to the focus ring. The notched infinity focus indicator is no longer accurate, as a result infinity focus is actually located outside of the range of the focus ring. Very disappointed in the durability of this product which is unfortunate because I really love the images it can produce.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens! Bought this to do wide night astro images... Haven't had a chance to use it for that yet, but in general shooting the quality is great. It can even make for some fun creative shots... I have been shooting with it on a 5DmkIII... I have not had issues with the flairs that some report. I am finding you have to have light hit at just the right angle to cause a flair and a slight recompose is all it takes to remove...
