IRIX 15mm f/2.4 overview

  • 1Description

Offering a wide-angle perspective, and characterized by its premium exterior build, the 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone Lens from Irix is a sophisticated prime lens designed for Canon EF-mount cameras. Benefitting the broad field of view is an advanced optical design that features aspherical, low-dispersion, and high-refractive index glass elements to control various aberrations and distortions, as well as maintain accurate and consistent color. A Neutrino coating is also utilized to control lens flare and ghosting and achieve a high degree of contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the optics, this 15mm f/2.4 makes use of a manual focus design for fine-tuned control, and incorporates a unique positive focus lock to secure the focusing position at any point for consistent, repeatable shooting. As the Blackstone version of this focal length, this lens is also distinguished by an aluminum and magnesium alloy exterior, engraved lens markings with fluorescent UV paint for high visibility, and extensive weather-sealing about the lens to permit working in harsh environments.

The Blackstone version of the 15mm f/2.4 lens features a durable aluminum and magnesium alloy housing and weather-resistant exterior along with inner seals, and an extra seal at the front element, to protect against dust and moisture intrusion. The metal exterior also distinguishes itself with an anti-scratch finish, and sports engraved focus distance and depth of field scales with fluorescent UV paint for high visibility when working in low-light conditions.
Wide-angle prime designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, this lens can also be used on APS-C models where it provides a 24mm equivalent focal length.
Two aspherical, three high-refractive index, and two extra-low dispersion elements are featured within the optical design to limit both spherical and chromatic aberrations, as well as color fringing and distortion, for improved clarity, sharpness, and even illumination.
A Neutrino coating has been applied to limit lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity.
Manual focus designed is benefitted by a positive focus lock mechanism to secure your focus position at any point to limit unwanted shifting of focus.
A hard click stop indicates the infinity position on the focus ring for easy use in low-visibility conditions.
Large depth of field scale benefits using hyperfocal and pre-focus techniques.
Front of lens has 95mm-diameter filter threads and the rear of the lens accepts 30 x 30mm cut gel filters to lessen the likelihood of vignetting.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to smooth bokeh.

IRIX 15mm f/2.4 reviews

15mm f/2.4 Blackstone Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp and Solid Build I LOVE the way this lens feels! Solid build and smooth focus. Upgraded to the Irix 15mm from a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 and couldn't be happier. The focus has a small stop or indent at infinity which I have found very accurate for astrophotography. No more hunting for infinity with my old Rokinon 14mm! My new Irix Blackstone arrived packaged in a metal box inside of the cardboard box AND included a nice protective travel case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Wide Angle Lens I recently received this Irix 15mm lens. Most of the reviews I've read give this high marks. In spite of this I was surprised, once I started to take photos, just how sharp the images were. I am very satisfied with this. There is the issue of the focus ring not being calibrated; mine is spot on. I was prepared to do the adjustment and was irritated that I would have to do this on a new lens. Surprise; no need to do the adjustment. There is a review of someone whose focus ring froze up and ended up sending it back. Too bad for that person. I have communicated with Irix and they have gotten back to me promptly; three times now. One of the questions I asked them was regarding a warranty. The warranty is for two years. No card is provided or needed. Proof of purchase is needed. Overall I am very impressed!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I would not buy this product again This lens was purchased for use in aurora and astro photography which requires the aperture to be set wide open as aurora borealis displays are usually in motion and need short exposures . The lens is very well constructed and looks great but optically it does not perform well enough for night sky landscapes . It could be just my copy of the lens but I could not reach infinity focus with my Canon full frame sensor camera and had to do the calibration adjustment on the lens as described in the owners manual which could have been a lot more detailed than it was. I managed to calibrate it after some difficulty and took some test shots of landscapes and then tried it on the night sky and found it to be less sharp than my older 16-35 mm zoom lens even in the centre of field. The edges of the field of view suffer from quite a lot of coma aberration and vignetting is pronounced so I am returning this lens and will keep looking for a lens that has the exacting qualities needed for astrophotography.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great ultra wide lens. OK, you're considering buying this lens, so that's why you're reading this. What's good and bad about it? Good: The lens is very sharp, with minimal distortion and only a bit of vignetting (which is pretty much gone by f/5.6. It's build quality is very solid. That it lacks image stabilization is not a problem, as the lenses' very wide angle compensates for all but the worst camera shake. Ditto for no auto focus. At ~f/8, hyperfocal distance is all you need. You can pretty much not bother with focusing for things over 2 meters (6.5') away at this aperture. Bad: This is a very specialized lens, as is any ultrawide. It is most unflattering for portraits, and most landscapes look like a flat plane and sky. You'll need to get creative to use it to best effect. Interiors, of course. But be very careful about lining up floors and ceilings so they aren't distorted. Easy to do! Be careful of objects in the corner of the frame. A kid's ball will look elliptical in the corner of the frame. The lens itself is a bit tricky to mount. The tiny white marking index should be an easily felt plastic blob (a la Leica) so you can mount it in low light. It's also a bit heavy, compared to say Canon's "nifty fifty". Don't be afraid to get really close to a subject. This can give very dramatic effects. Overall, better than what I expected at this price point.
