Chimera 1740 overview

  • 1Description

The 16 x 22" Chimera Maxi Bank Softbox is designed for use with a portable (on-camera type) flash. With fabric not intended for the heat of a continuous light, the Extra Small Maxi Bank Softbox with white interior is suitable for work in small spaces where the softening of your flash is desired. Because of its small size and white lining, the light quality will softer than with a silver-lined softbox.

The 16 x 22" size is ultra portable and lightweight. The image supplied by Chimera shows this item in use with optional equipment that is not included.

A good solution for softening and spreading on-camera flash.
Required speed (mounting) rings are available separately for many manufacturers' strobes.

Maxi Bank Softbox (White, Extra Small) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Maxi Softbox; Big Job in a small package I am a gun and run photography; always on the move. Many times lighting is rotten to say the least. I looked for a way to take studio type lighting without having to have five helpers along to carry and set up. I found the Maxi Softbox. It is light, easy to set up, gives a wonderful soft light when coupled with my Canon 580EX flash. The only negative about this product is that it will catch the wind which will causes it to pull on the mount. Once you experience that a few time controlling it is no problem. I have used it in very low light, harsh shadow, indoors and for event shooting with wonderful results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Studio lighting on the road This is a fantastic product for use with a Nikon SB-800. It softens the light like nothing else and allows a degree of lighting nothing else offers. It's light weight, easy to set up and very portable. The required speed ring is a space age plastic that will take years of abuse. Add a light stand or boom set up, off camera TTl cable and you have everything needed for any type of single portrait lighting anywere. If you don't already have one, you're missing out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surpassed expectations This was my introduction to proper light modifiers. Coupled with a Canon 580 EXII this softbox provides nice even lighting in a small and durable package. Chimera even sells a kit so that you can use two speedlights. The biggest drawback is really the speed ring because it means that while being very portable it takes more time to set up but the trade-off is a really secure and study product. A great investment and a good (and bad) way to be bitten by the lighting bug.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good piece of flash kit Goes together quickly and collapses nicely for use on site or in the field. Good size for general portraiture and field documentary portraits. Works nicely for off camera triggered slave. The product seems robust enough in its build, but I can't speak for longer term or what it would be like after a hundred or so assembly and disassembly runs. The fit of the support bars into the adapt ring mount is solid and stiff, may loosen with time. You're corked if the adapter slots break.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Chimera Maxi Softbox - Excellent buy! I bought this softbox to allow portability for shooting both nature and portraits outdoors, and I love the flexibility and ease of assembling and transporting it, as well as the performance! Great soft light, and it doesn't cost a fortune. The only negative is the mount to a tripod or remote flash bracket. The screw that holds the box and mounting ring isn't quite sturdy enough to tilt my Canon 580EX flash vertical and hold it in that position.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Chimera Softbox This soft box is super handy on the go. Can easily be hand held or put on a stand if you are working by yourself. The only downfall is that the carry case isn't big enough to leave my flash attached to the mount.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just fine Good construction. Instructions for putting it together were not great, but I called Chimera and got right through to someone that helped me quickly. I have used it a couple of times now and it works well. I wish the swivel bracket had come with it, instead of another purchase I will need to make.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It does what it is supposed to do It works fine, diffuses the light like a soft box is supposed to.
