NiSi NIP-100-NGT overview

  • 1Description

The NiSi 100 x 100mm Natural-Night Filter is designed to reduce the appearance of light pollution in images or video that include the night sky and illumination from artificial light sources. This effect can be obtained when this filter is used on a film camera system with daylight film installed, or on a digital camera system with its daylight white balance setting selected.

Light pollution occurs in areas of the night sky that are above or near concentrated and intense sources of artificial light such as cities. These light sources can include exterior and interior lamps for commercial or residential buildings, brightly lit advertisements such as billboards, streetlamps, as well as sports and entertainment venues. Together, they can result in a type of light pollution known as skyglow, where individual stars, the Milky Way, and other astronomical features in the night sky are obscured. Additionally, artificial lights clustered together can become difficult to individually discern. Light pollution from these "cluttered" sources can become a source of distraction within an image and can resemble overexposed areas of glare.

When used, the NiSi 100 x 100mm Natural-Night Filter can improve the results of nighttime images by blocking the yellow light from sodium-vapor lamps, mercury-vapor lamps, or low Color Rendering Index LED's, common light sources within urban areas. By preventing the dominant wavelengths of light associated with the color of those lamps from being recorded, the visibility of astronomical objects is enhanced, and where they appear, artificial light sources are more clearly defined with less glare and improved contrast.

This filter is compatible with filter holders that can accommodate 2mm-thick, 100 x 100mm rectangular filters and is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity. Each glass surface includes one layer of nano coating. The nano coating associated with this filter results in an improved beading effect when in contact with water or oil for greater cleaning efficiency.

A leatherette pouch is included with this filter for storage and transport.

    NiSi NIP-100-NGT reviews

    100 x 100mm Natural-Night Filter is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dramatic Results!!! I purchased the NiSi 100 x 100mm natural-Night Filter just before going on a trip to San Francisco for the first time. A friend saw this filter and mentioned it to me. Intrigued, I purchased one. Well, I must say, the results for me were very dramatic to say the least. Using this filter has already cut my processing time, and, I am not even completely sure I could achieve these pleasing results no matter how much I tortured the pixels in Lightroom or Photoshop. My only potential negative would be that on the first use, this filter slid out of my Lee filter holder, even though it felt snug when I inserted it. I am most thankful that it did not land on a hard surface! My Lee brand filters stay securely in the same filter holder with this never ever being a problem. I'm guessing the NiSi filter is ever so slightly thinner than the Lee products. Whatever the case, I need to figure out a way to keep this from happening again. Other than that, I am looking forward to seeing what else this amazing piece of glass can do. Several of my San Francisco night photos (like the iconic painted ladies houses of Alamo Square with the San Francisco skyline behind for instance) have benefited greatly from the use of this new filter. Be careful if you use a Lee foundation kit (perhaps it's merely some issue specific to only my equipment), but other than that, I can completely recommend this filter for game-changing results! The attached unprocessed RAW photos were both shot at ISO 200 and f/6.3. The one without the filter was exposed for 1 second and the one with the filter was exposed for 2 seconds, to yield similar exposure levels (I shot in aperture priority mode with no change in the lighting on the scene or adjustment to the camera). So there is at least a minimal reduction in the amount of light passing through to the sensor when using the Natural-Night filter. Also, I left my Canon 5D Mark IV on auto white balance as I found it produced the best results for me.
