Apple iPad overview

  • 1Description

Apple updated their classic space gray 9.7" iPad with an Apple A9 chip, which also has a M9 motion coprocessor. This 64-bit chip delivers performance that makes apps feel fast and fluid. Explore rich learning apps, play graphically intensive games, or even use two apps at once with iOS 10's multitasking features.

The iPad features a 9.7" Retina Display that has a 2048 x 1536 resolution, resulting in 264 ppi — over 3.1 million pixels. The display also has multi-touch support.

At just one pound and 7.5mm thin, the iPad features an aluminum unibody construction that delivers a solid feel. There is also a front 1.2MP FaceTime HD camera and a rear 8MP camera that can record 1080p video.

With support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi, the iPad can reach data transfer speeds of up to 866 Mbps. The iPad also supports LTE networks worldwide for convenient connectivity. And Apple SIM lets you easily connect to wireless networks in over 140 countries and regions, right from your device.

An Apple SIM card is included, allowing you to select data plans from AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and GigSky. Please note that Verizon requires you to purchase their own nano SIM in order to use their network.

9.7" Retina Display
Within the 9.7" LED-backlit touchscreen, the 2048 x 1536 native resolution renders text and images at 264 pixels per inch and a total of over 3.1 million pixels. The display also features an oleophobic coating, which helps reduce the amount of fingerprint smudges.
8-Megapixel Rear Camera
The f/2.4 rear camera has an 8-megapixel sensor that captures images at a native resolution of 3264 x 2448 and 1080p HD video. The camera also features time-lapse video, exposure control, 120 fps slo-mo, a burst mode, a timer mode, and a high-resolution panorama mode.
FaceTime HD Camera
Put a face — or two — on every conversation. The 1.2-megapixel front-facing FaceTime HD camera can record 720p video and has an f/2.2 aperture that lets in more light. Its sensor and pixels help improve performance in low-light conditions, while dual microphones employ noise-reduction technology to help suppress background noise. In addition, when you switch cameras from front to back (or vice versa), the microphones switch too, so what your iPad sees is what it hears.
Touch ID
Use your unique fingerprint as a password. Touch ID lets you unlock your iPad instantly and secure private data in apps. You can also use it to make purchases with Apple Pay in apps and websites.
Mobile Broadband
With LTE mobile broadband support, you can use your iPad mini 4 almost anywhere you go, making use of high speed cellular networks. The mini 4 now supports 20 LTE bands for greater flexibility. In addition to support for a fast mobile network, the iPad mini can also be used as a personal hotspot for sharing the data connection with your computer. Mobile data plans are sold separately
802.11ac Wi-Fi
Thanks to two 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz antennas and MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) technology, the iPad can reach download speeds of up to 866 Mbps with its 802.11ac connection. So now when you want to download a movie, share photos or documents with AirDrop, or just browse the web, your connection is even faster than before.
Durable & Portable
At just one pound and 7.5mm thin, the iPad is designed to go wherever you go. And it's as durable as it is portable, with an aluminum unibody construction that delivers a solid feel.
iOS 10
iOS 10 is Apple's secure mobile operating system. You can work and play using two apps at once, ask Siri to send a message for you, and automatically back up your files with iCloud, so you can access them anywhere. Included are a number of built-in apps that help you get more out of your device.
Work Across Devices
The iPad works seamlessly with your other Apple devices. Start an email on your iPhone and finish it on the iPad. Or, copy images, video, and text from your iPad, then paste to your nearby Mac. You can even use AirDrop to share files wirelessly and instantly between devices.

    Apple iPad reviews

    9.7" iPad (2017, 128GB, Wi-Fi + 4G LTE, Space Gray) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Typical Apple made to break construction I had iPad 4s I lost because Apple doesn't let you set off find my iPad alarm from an Android phone. After I lost the 1st iPad 4 to theft I bought a used one because that one was unbreakable. But after that one was stolen I was forced to buy this thin, cheap iPad 2017 designed to break easily compared to the iPad 4. Bought a carrying case with shoulder strap but it falls out. That is how it got broken. How can they selll products that are mobile but slippery and under normal use falls to the floor or pavement and break and win a class action lawsuit? They hired the best attorneys their billions of non taxed profits could buy, that's how.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I highly recommend both the iPad and B&H. This was a replacement for the original (first) generation 9.7 iPad that was showing its age (slow, could not take the latest software, non-retina display, etc.). This one is much thinner and lighter, even though it has more memory and the same screen size. It's fast, light, has great resolution and ample capacity for almost anything that I would need. Dealing the B&H was terrific. I highly recommend both the iPad and B&H.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An Incremental Improvement in the iPad Line The 2017 9.7 takes a step back in Apple's design language. The unit is dimensionally the same as the original iPad Air, but outfitted like the Air 2, so it has no rotation lock switch but does have the fingerprint reader. It also appears to have the NFC capability, so supports ApplePay. Be warned, if you purchase the 4G LTE unit as sold by B&H, you cannot connect to Verizon Wireless- would have been nice to know that. It is faster than the Air in noticeable ways, but continues to operate like every other device running iOS so there is little in the way of learning curve. We were replacing a 4th Generation Retina display iPad, so the differences are dramatic; but less impressive when compared to our an original iPad Air (also purchased from B&H). As always, B&H made purchasing this unit easy and shipping was at no additional charge. I am especially glad as to the care B&H takes in packaging as UPS literally crushed 1/3rd of the shipping box down to half its original size but the iPad box was safely tucked inside the air pillow packing. UPS also took 6 days to deliver via 3-Day Select; but apparently 3-Day Select can take up to 7 days. Yeah. Cases that will fit this unit include most that work on the iPad Air (except the sealed designs like Otterbox which will have the volume buttons out of alignment), non sealed Air 2 cases (because this unit is thicker so won't seat properly) and iPad Pro 9.7 cases. We tested this in both a Speck Balance Folio and a Targus VersaVu Classic. We kept it in the Targus case for the 360 degree rotation ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sleek, fast, & powerful Sleek, fast, & powerful! My husband has been trying to get me an iPad for several years now. I have a MacBook and iPhone and never felt that I would use an iPad. However, that has all changed. I have a keyboard that I Bluetooth with my new iPad and it's just like another computer. Display Images are sharp. It was easy to setup. I'm on Verizon so I took my iPad in to the store - they inserted a SIM card & I was on my way! Plus...B&H is always great to work with. If I have ever had questions, the customer service department is there to help!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GreatPad This iPad was very easy to set up and works extremely well. B&H did a good job with the purchase and delivery of this item. I would continue to shop with them for other items of tis nature in the future.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Brilliant product, awkward to activate as a replacement. Do iPads wear out? We can debate that. But in recent months my 4.5-year-old 3rd generation iPad seemed to be getting slower and slower, so I set out to investigate replacing it. Coincidentally while my investigation was going on, and I was leaning toward the latest iPad Air, Apple announced this model. So the first day available, I ordered. It took about a month till B&H had it in stock, but then it arrived quickly. My impressions thus far are that this was money well spent! It's amazingly faster than my old one. The actual display area is the same size, but the dimensions are smaller because of a narrower bezel and thinner body. I don't have the exact figures handy, but I'd say it weighs about half of my old one, which is a real boon when you're using it in situations where you're supporting its weight by hand (picture reading in bed, for example). I have only one complaint. As my story shows, I was replacing an old unit. I wish Apple would work out the SIM card situation with the major carriers to make it easy to activate a new unit, replacing and deactivating an old one on the same cell number. I tried on my own, and then enlisted the help of AT&T's Web support, who said I'd have to visit an actual AT&T store. I did, and they took care of the activation no sweat, but still, I'm surprised that was needed. Apparently I could have activated it on my own if I wanted to add a line of service, but not transfer. The iPad came with an Apple SIM; AT&T replaced it with their own SIM.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much more cost effective compared to the original iPad Air No surprises. Very similar to the original iPad Air 1 that I also own. Compared to iPad Air 1, it has twice RAM (2 GB vs 1 GB), much faster processor, and it omits the side mute switch. Note that in the cellular settings, you can get free for life 200 MB data per month from T-Mobile.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it. Having built in data is the way to go Paired with a bluetooth keyboard this thing pretty replaces any need for a laptop unless you're needing to do heavy lifting with spreadsheets, etc. Love it.
