Can the center column be reversed to mount camera at ground level for macro work?
Yes, it can!
Simply unscrew the retaining ring at the bottom of the column, take the whole thing out and insert it from the bottom up. There is only a groove that you need to allign with and make sure to screw the retaing ring back in to avoid dropping the camera and/or loosing the ring.

The center column can be removed, but Gitzo no longer makes replacement short columns for series 1.

whats the difference between the series 1 and 2 and 3 tripods?
Hi,
From what I understood, this is all about the legs thickness. Series 1 is thinner while 3 is thicker, giving a higher weight and therefore more stability.
You've got to determine the purpose of your tripod (travel vs. studio, bit of both) to determine the series that would best fit your needs.
