Tiffen Black Satin Overview

Designed with filmmakers in mind, this 4 x 5.65" Black Satin Diffusion Filter from Tiffen features a low density of 1/8 for an understated effect. It is designed to subtly soften the image and lower detail resolution, being often sought after by videographers who want to simulate the look of film footage while shooting on digital gear. This black satin model has a grittier look than a regular satin, and gently controls highlights while reducing overall image contrast. So far I am really impressed at how this filter blooms highlights in a subtle way without destroying the contrast in shadows and mid tones. I also own Black Pro Mist filters and they always struggled in heavily backlit situations.

Is a step up ring needed to avoid vignetting at 24mm 82mm lens? What about for stacking filters, say 1 nd/cpl+ this filter?

No, you would not get any vignettes using the Tiffen 82mm Black Satin 1/8 Filter. Depending on the ND/PL that you use, you should be fine with not needing the step-up ring.

At 24mm you should not experience any vignetting, even with a full frame sensor.

According to Tiffen, they state that the 4.5” filters are not threaded and has no internal/external threads, as they are a drop-in style filter made for adapters. As such, the listed 4.5" size reflects the total size of the filter (the outer diameter) which would fit into a 4.5” holder.

Yes, this will have a 67mm front filter thread. Keep in mind that you may experience vignetting when stacking filters when shooting at wide focal lengths.
