Atomos ATOMNJAFL2 overview

  • 1Description

The Atomos Ninja Flame is a 7", 1920 x 1200 on-camera recording monitor combining 4K recording with a 10-bit FRC panel that supports native display of HDR (log) footage, as well as high-brightness viewing of Rec. 709 footage. It utilizes an HDMI input to support clean output signals at resolutions up to UHD 4K, recording it to 2.5" SSDs using 10-bit, 4:2:2 Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHR codecs.

The 10-bit panel and AtomHDR display technology support a brightness range of over 10 stops, allowing you to more accurately monitor your log gamma footage without having to view flat, washed-out looking images, or use a LUT to compress the dynamic range and color space. The monitor offers built-in pre-sets to accurately translate popular log formats from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, ARRI, RED, and JVC cameras. The settings only affect viewing, with recorded video remaining unaltered.

In addition to HDR monitoring, the monitor also offers a High Bright mode for traditional Rec. 709 monitoring. This mode takes advantage of the full 1500 cd/m² brightness to allow for more confident monitoring in bright outdoor environments, even without a sun hood. In HDR mode, use of an included snap-on sun hood is required, as displaying a wider brightness range reduces the overall brightness of the monitor.

Built to withstand the rigors of production, the Ninja Flame features built-in protective armor with silicone-covered corners and chamfered edges. Compared to the original Ninja, the Flame now features dual Sony L-Series battery plates that support battery hot-swapping, enabling longer run times. For audio recording, the monitor features a 3.5mm microphone input, with on-screen audio level display. Additionally, the monitor features a variety of on-screen exposure analysis, framing, and focus assist tools. Included with the basic kit are a Master Caddy II 2.5" drive enclosure and an AC adapter power supply. A travel case for storing the monitor is also included to protect it during storage and transport.

    Atomos ATOMNJAFL2 reviews

Ninja Flame 7" 4K HDMI Recording Monitor is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from FS5 Owners Please Read If you have an FS5 with RAW Output this recorder will not see the RAW output from the camera via HDMI. You will need to shoot in a XAVC mode internally and the HDMI relay output that will only support 4K up to 30p or HD up to 60p. The stated HD 120fps in specifics does not apply to the FS5 in RAW mode. If you want RAW support you will need to step-up to a version of the recorder with SDI. Found this out the hard way, but overall this is still an excellent monitor, very bright in sunlight at 1500 nits and straight forward easy to access options. ProRes 422/HQ is a clean and robust codec.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Problems with Nikon I have a Ninja blade and love it but wanted a bigger screen and 4K video for future use. I decided to upgrade to the Ninja Flame. The screen is incredible and it shoots really good video but with my Nikon D810 and D750 the audio distorts intermittently. When I contacted Atomos they said it was a known problem with Nikon and they needed Nikon to fix it. I then pointed out I had shot hundreds of hours of video with my Ninja Blade with those same two Nikons and never had a problem. They then admitted it was their problem and said they would fix it. It have now been 11 months, no fix, no warning on their web site not to buy this if you have a Nikon and most recently they have stopped returning my emails. I often capture audio separately so I am able to use it but there are times when I would like capture audio and video to one device. Atomos owes their customers fair warning about this device and ultimately a fix.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good quality monitor and recorder I'm using it with first generation of sony a7s and like it very much, it gives 4 30p, prores, 4:2:2 and best monitoring in real time for the price. Image is better, than in camera 4k, so you will step forward and save money with non-latest cameras on the market, like my a7s 1. But remember, that you will need way more extra space on your hard drives because of inceasing bitrate and the hole rig will be larger and heavier

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Haven't yet used this to its full potential. This is a fantastic monitor. I didn't have a need for SDI inputs so I opted for this model. The display quality as good as I expected. Super bright with the 1500nit brightness. The unit is bright enough to use in the sun without a hood, though you'd be able to see it even better with one installed. IPS technology allows you to view the screen from various angles without changes to the crisp image quality. I have not yet used the Ninja Flame as a recorder, though I plan to in the future. I need to purchase an SSD. I have watched many positive reviews on the recording capabilities and color rendering, so I know it's going to be great when the time comes. I have two batteries for the display and they last a long time, though I don't know what to expect once I start recording with the unit. I purchased this for use with a Sony a7s II and it's a good pairing. The only drawback is with the Sony camera itself. It doesn't output 4K over HDMI until you press record. This makes it harder to fine tune focus without a sharp image to work with. Not a drawback of the monitor, but of the camera unfortunately. I would recommend this product to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this monitor! I'm writing this review almost a year after purchasing this monitor – and I love it more and more each time I use it! It's relatively huge on an a7SII/a7RII, and admittedly I don't use it for every shoot; but when I do, it's fantastic. I much prefer Atomos' interface (over SmallHD), and the touch screen is very accurate. I use it on my Ronin-M setup, and it's really helped me get a better idea of what I'm capturing. I got it with the accessory kit (case, extra batteries, and sun shade), which was a great addition to the monitor. I would recommend having the hard case, as it's a great HPRC case with lots of room for accessories. The sun shade is fairly bulky, and in hot weather actually came un-glued at the seams. But I'm sure it can be fixed with more glue and some tape. But, this review isn't for that – it's for an incredible monitor that has helped me (and my clients) get an accurate idea of what's coming out of the camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More than you need and that is good Everytime I use the ninja Flame, I find more it can do. With a little practice time and some by accident I found how easy and useful this recorder/monitor is. Most of the features are intuitive and the ones that are not, are easy to find answers for. Atomos also is very helpful with any questions you may have. The only thing I can add is do not skimp on drive space. This will use a lot quick if recording at a high resolution. It records full frame with no drop. Think 60 full color photos per second at 1080i/p or 4K. Where most camcamcorders use a different format. So what you may get on a small SD card the Atomos may use 250Gigs or more. What you record at will effect the space used. I say buy 2x more than you think you may need. Worse case you have backup storage. I use it for backup recording of Deposition work, where a day could be very long. I also use it as my monitor and for set up. Lager screen than the camera display.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would recommend I like Atmos products so I was excited to get this monitor. I haven't done much in terms of recording with it, but as far as just a monitor goes, the picture is clear and the touchscreen and playback work great. Definitely recommend!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not cheap for the price The Ninja flame is very good and a great buy. However for the price asked for, it is surprising that a HDMI cable and a reader is not supplied. Adding all of it including a SD card costs another 400 dollars which makes other monitors much more competitive.
