Canon SX730 HS overview

  • 1Description

A versatile and compact point-and-shoot, the silver PowerShot SX730 HS from Canon combines a wide-reaching zoom with apt multimedia recording capabilities. Employing a 20.3MP 1/2.3" High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6 image processor, smooth image quality is afforded along with enhanced low-light sensitivity and minimal noise when working with sensitivities up to ISO 3200. The sensor and processor also enable shooting continuously at a rate of 5.9 fps as well as recording Full HD 1080p/60 video. Benefitting the imaging capabilities is a 40x zoom lens, which covers a 24-960mm equivalent focal length range, to suit photographing in a wide variety of situations. Intelligent IS complements this reach by minimizing the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Sleek and pocketable, the SX730 HS is also characterized by its 3.0" 922k-dot tilting LCD monitor, which is perfect for shooting from low angles or taking well-composed selfies, and built-in Wi-Fi with NFC and Bluetooth connectivity allow you to wirelessly share imagery and remotely control the camera from a paired smartphone or tablet.

20.3MP CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 6 Image Processor
A 20.3MP 1/2.3" High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor pairs with the DIGIC 6 image processor to realize notable image quality and speed to permit stills shooting at up to 5.9 fps and Full HD 1080p video recording at 60 fps. Together, the sensor and processor also produce clean image quality and enhanced sensitivity to ISO 3200 with minimal noise for working in difficult lighting conditions. The processor also enhances focusing speeds and subject tracking capabilities, as well as avails 5-axis Dynamic IS to compensate for camera movement for smoother video quality.
40x Zoom Lens and Intelligent Image Stabilization
An expansive 40x optical zoom lens offers a wide-angle to super telephoto equivalent focal length range of 24-960mm to suit working with a wide variety of subjects. This extensive reach is complemented by a versatile Intelligent IS image stabilization system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for both stills and video shooting:

  • Normal IS corrects for a wide range of common camera movements.
  • Panning IS detects deliberate panning movements and does not compensate for lateral movements to permit desired camera movements.
  • Macro (Hybrid) IS corrects for shift-type camera shake that commonly occurs when working with close-up subject matter.
  • Tripod is a dedicated setting that automatically deactivates IS when the use of a tripod is detected since camera-based stabilization is not needed.

  • Dynamic IS is well-suited to recording at wide-angle focal lengths and reduces unwanted shaking that typically occurs when walking while recording.
  • Powered IS compensates for hand movements that become more visually discernible when working at the telephoto end of the zoom range.
  • Macro (Hybrid) IS minimizes the appearance of shake when walking as well as compensates for shift-type shake that occurs when working with close-up subject matter.
  • Active Tripod IS minimizes the slight amount of shake that can happen when recording video while using a tripod.
Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC and Bluetooth
Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows you to wirelessly share your photos and movies with a linked smartphone or tablet as well as remotely control the camera from the mobile device by using the Camera Connect app. Mobile devices can also connect to the camera using Bluetooth for remotely adjusting settings and gaining a live view image from your smartphone or tablet. Bluetooth connectivity also allows you to use your smartphone's location data to geotag your photos, and the date can also be stamped on your imagery for easy reference.
Other Camera Features
  • A large 3.0" 922k-dot LCD monitor is available for composing imagery, navigating the menu, and reviewing photos and videos, and the screen can be tilted upward 180° to suit working from low and front-facing angles.
  • Zoom Framing Assist automatically zooms in or out to keep a subject within the frame and in focus when using longer focal lengths.
  • MF Peaking is available for a clearer, more objective means to attain sharp focus when manually focusing.
  • Self Portrait Mode encompasses a range of tools for capturing the perfect selfie, including skin tone smoothing, background blurring, brightness adjustment, and a customizable self-timer. This mode can be accessed through the menu or can be automatically activated when the screen is tilted a full 180°.
  • Creative Shot mode utilizes various compositional, color, and lighting elements from an original image in order to produce a new, unique image with artistic flair.
  • Story Highlights can automatically produce a highlight reel, comprised of videos and photos from a day or an event, and then add music and effects for playback.

Canon SX730 HS reviews

PowerShot SX730 HS Digital Camera (Silver) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Pocket Camera This small camera is an excellent little camera which can fit in a shirt pocket. While it is a small 1/2.3 sensor and not as good as my 1 sensor G3X, it produces very good photos; and the 40X optical zoom makes it very useful. As an aside, I used it side by side with a Panasonic Lumix ZS70 pocket camera. The ZS70 has a few more features, but the overall IQ of the SX730HS was far superior, especially at ISO 400 or greater. I sold the ZS70 and kept the SX730HS. The SX730HS does an excellent job for its size; and I would recommend it as a backup or for use where a full sized camera might not be usable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little camera I own several Canon cameras ranging from early PowerShots to EOS 5 and EOS 7 and multiple lenses. I bought the SX730 to be my new carry everywhere camera. I've found it is so packed with features and capabilities it easily meets that goal. I will likely use it in places where I would have used a bigger SLR in the past. I do wish it had RAW capability but....I'll live without it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Updated Review after less than one month I recently purchased the Canon PowerShot SX730 HS, and even submitted a very nice review. Reasonably priced at $379.00 from B & H Photo, I was a happy camper. This camera takes spectacular pictures, allows me to edit them within the camera itself, and/or send the pictures wirelessly to my iPhone. In Europe, the WIFI connection was not always perfect. So, sometimes while transferring my photos, I would lose the connection and have to start over. I don't expect to have that same issue here in the States. The camera was reliable, the battery kept its charge throughout each day, and it was easy to use. I simply charged the battery and had it ready for the next tour day. I particularly liked the selfie feature, which worked quite smoothly. I also like the fact that the flash doesn't pop up unless and until you manually move the switch. This is especially helpful because, just like my former Sony digital camera, the flash would pop up where most people want to place their left hand index finger. It was always a pain having to tell people not to put their finger there. The only CON was when I returned home and wanted to wirelessly transfer my pictures to my MacBook Pro Version 10.11.6. Presently, this camera does not have that capability. I contacted a Canon rep who guided me through the process of uploading my pictures to their cloud. I thought it worked quickly & perfectly. However, I learned that not all pictures were downloaded to my MacBook Pro Photos library, that some were missing and that apparently all the photos had also been transferred to my Transferred folder. I contacted Canon & discovered that I would have to individually drag and drop each photo to my photo library. What a hassle! I have subsequently ordered the correct cable to upload the pictures that way. So, the wireless uploading function to my computer is not worth the time and effort. I certainly didn't expect that from Canon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love my new camera Used Canon products for a long time, so this has been easy to pick up. I was startled not to easily find info on the cable I would need to connect to a computer. I live in a world with minimal cell phone coverage (etc) and needed to connect to a computer right away. Getting the cable locally was a bit of a challenge ... but I got it in time to meet the deadline. Thanks for the super fast delivery too. I am not a techie type ... more of an artist who tries to tell stories with my photos, and the zoom is terrific as I no longer need to get as close (which can spoil the moment). Now I will be able to start using it to play and as I look at older photos I think oh, that could have been great if I had had the new camera. Also love that it is still so compact.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this camera Pros: Flip viewer making it so easy for taking selfies... Very convenient feature. Photos are excellent quality, crisp, clear. Very intuitive and menu is simple to navigate. Easy set up with wifi, smart phone, PC. Love ability to easily delete a range of pictures. We did not have this with our previous Sony camera. Cons: It is a little bigger and heavier than the previous point-and-shoot cameras we have owned, but the pros make up for this. So far, this is the only negative we have run across.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect in Every Way I bought this camera on a whim because it was light and small with a relatively long zoom. I have quite a few cameras most big and bulky. I wanted one that fit comfortably in my hand yet small enough to fit a case on my belt so I could carry it me everywhere with me. Well that's the SX730. What I press me the most was the zoom, the ability to control some elements of the exposure myself and the many pre-set programs that I can change to quickly to get just the shot I want. Because I like it so much I had a custom case in leather made for it and it sits perfectly on my belt! The only thing that would make it more than perfect, raw and a bigger sensor but then it would probably be larger, heavier and not perfect!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great point and shoot We biught this camer and two days later took it to the rain forests of Peru. We were amazed at how we could take clear pictures of animals 40-50 foot up I. The trees. We are still exploring the various features and are very happy with the results. It's small size makes it easy to transport
