    Sound Devices MX-8AA reviews

MX-8AA Battery Sled for MixPre-3 and MixPre-6 is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It Works Because of negative comments about battery life on the MixPre 3 recorders, I bought the 8 Cell Battery Sled when I bought my recorder. With NiMH batteries, it looks like I can get over four hours recording time. That’s plenty for me. There isn’t too much to say about the sled other than, it works. It has a surprisingly robust feel considering its plastic construction. Like other reviewers, I was initially confused concerning how to open the sled. I finally realized that there is a small tab at the end to permit it to be opened. A short video or even a picture or diagram from B & H or “Sound Devices” could help alleviate the confusion.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing quality Junk product. Not of typical Sound Devices build quality. Feels like it will break every time I connect and disconnect it. Would like to see Sound Devices release an updated version with better build quality for this AA model and the Sony NP-L model.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Power Option To Extend Your Recording I bought this instead of the Sony mount sled because I prefer the slim form factor of 8 AA Battery sled for the Mix Pre 6. I felt that the Sony mount takes away from that slim form factor and requires a bigger audio bag to house it. Let me start off by saying that when I got it, I had my doubts about it, especially when it comes to opening the top battery lid to add the 4 additional batteries. After some practice I found that the easiest way to open the battery sled is to pinch both side of the top lid (opposite of the top latch) and lifting up. The arrow icon near the corned of the latch is useless and is hard to operate since you need to apply pressure to the latch to open the top lid while lifting. That being said, my recorder lasts a LONG time and would recommend the Panasonic Eneloop Pro batteries. Add a USB-C power bus and your recorder can easily last an entire shoot day.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Necessary but overpriced and junky You certainly need this for the mixpre6 since it is extremely power hungry. But the sled is poorly designed. Opening the battery door is a bit of a struggle until one gets use to it. Do not pay any attention to the little molded arrows. Just dig under the door with you fingernail and pull it open once you have released the plastic lock mechanism. Considering the cost, one would expect more from Sound Devices. Attaching the sled to the recorder is awkward too since it can easily be attached upside down which will damage the contacts on the recorder. I'm hoping for a 3rd party solution in The future. Another Sound Devices design question-- why did they make it so that to change an SD card one must remove the battery sled. Great recorders but lacking the design elegance of the 7 series. But for one third the price, maybe it is ok.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Necessary Evil I have a MixPre-6 and LOVE it. Sound Devices needs no introduction here! Even the original 4-AA battery sled that comes with the MixPre is fine. But, I needed more run time because the MixPre seems to eat through batteries pretty quickly, and I liked running off of battery power instead of USB, which would probably come from my computer, which introduces noise. Anyways, the other critical review of this is spot on. You'd have to hold this in your hand to fully understand, but it basically holds 4 batteries on one side and 4 on the other, then attaches to the MixPre like the 4-battery stock sled. It obviously sticks out more and changes the center of gravity a bit, so if you're mounting this to a camera you'll have to tweak the fluid head or whatever rig you're using. At first, I thought the negative review was too picky. THEN I actually got this thing in the mail! The negative review was right. It is WAY overpriced and a bad design. It is WAY too hard to open the 'outer' door to access 4 of the batteries. One end has this arrow thing and some other tab you're supposed to depress to open the cover to change the batteries.. but it's hard to operate. I'm no dummy and don't think I'm a 'picky' person, but this things is HARD to open! And the whole thing is just cheap plastic with a tiny bit of metal inside for the battery contacts. I have bought my kids ENTIRE TOYS that cost LESS than this battery sled, and their toys come with a battery compartment that holds 8 AAs and is better-designed that this. So yeah, it's expensive and every time I change the batteries, I feel like I am going to break the outer cover off. Sound Devices has a great reputation for their gear. They have great support (they emailed me back about a question I had and were very helpful). But, to be blunt, this battery sled is OVERPRICED and could definitely use a better design that doesn't feel like it's going to break at any moment. I'll keep using this because it doubles my recording time and keeps it 100% portable. My next step, if I needed a better power solution, would be to use the USB C connection on the MixPre, and connect it to a larger battery bank (You know, the kind used for charging phones and tablets). As long as the voltage is right coming out of the battery bank, it should operate the Mix-Pre. The only problem with that is an external battery pack plus another cable to carry. Not the biggest deal in the world, but I think the goal is for us to minimize the size and weight of our 'rig' whether it's in a studio or out on location. If the 2 photos I took show up, I used a red pen to try to point out the 'arrow' locations of where you're 'supposed' to push to open it... it just doesn't work out that easily in real life. So, like I said, if you need more run time and don't want the ugly Sony L battery sled and don't want any 'external power', get this... just know, it's a necessary evil.
