Sound Devices MX-8AA Reviews

Overpriced, Questionable Build Quality, But Best Option

My title pretty much sums it up. I've owned a lot of Tascam and Zoom recorder/mixers over the years and been perfectly happy with all of them. I recently decided to invest in a legendary Sound Devices MixPre-6. It lives up to it's reputation. It's only flaw is it's power supply options - they are numerous and all come with compromises. This is the option I went with. It works, and that's about all I can say about it. It's the option that fits best in a K-Tek MixPro bag. The design is funky, the material choices and build quality are questionable and at $80 it is grossly overpriced. Buy a full double set of eneloops and you'll probably be set for a full day of recording.

it's good and serves the purpose

This is good if all you need is 2.5 maybe 3 hours of recording time (at one time), which fits what I do, plus it doesn't take up much room. You can always stop and replace the batteries, if you need more time, and i use the 3200 Energizer rechargeables. It snaps in the back of the mixPre 3, and has a very snug fit. It is hard plastic, but it does what it is designed to do, and so I'm pleased with it.

If you use rechargeable batteries in this, can they be charged overnight by connecting the MixPre3 to a USB port?
Asked by: Chris
No you can power the recorder via USB while recording or via the rechargeable AA batteries, however they need to be charged with their own charger outside the recorder.

Does this work as well with the MixPre-3 II?
Asked by: Ian
I don’t see any reason why it won’t work with MixPre3 I but you should double check with Sound Devices. As far as I know the new model has the same size and style chassis as the original model.

Are we able to use 8 iPower rechargeable lipo batteries with this sled?
Asked by: Oscar
It is not recommended to use rechargeable lithium batteries with a Mixpre series recorder. Sound Device does recommend using 1.5v non-rechargeable lithium batteries, or higher powered NiMH batteries such as B&H # PAKJ17KHCA4A.
