G-Technology 0G05753 overview

  • 1Description

Designed for demanding applications and multi-stream HD, 2K, 4K, and HDR workflows, the G-RAID 12TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array from G-Technology provides up to 12TB of enterprise-class storage that is made up of two 6TB 7200 rpm 3.5" hard drives and is equipped with two Thunderbolt 3 ports, one USB 3.1 (USB 3.1 Gen 2) port, and one HDMI port. While one of the Thunderbolt 3 ports is used to interface with your host system at speeds of up to 440 MB/s, the other can be used to daisy chain up to five additional devices to your G-RAID. If your system doesn't have Thunderbolt 3, you can use the 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 port, while the HDMI port supports HDCP 2.2, HDR, and 4K/60 fps video passthrough. For those who wish to use this G-RAID with their USB Type-A system, a USB Type-C to Type-A cable is included that supports 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 (USB 3.1 Gen 2), 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 (USB 3.1 Gen 1), and 480 Mb/s USB 2.0.

The dual drive bays of this G-RAID support hardware-controlled RAID 0 and RAID 1. RAID 0 stripes the two drives together, providing enhanced read and write speeds, but no data redundancy, while RAID 1 mirrors the content of one drive to the other, providing 1:1 data redundancy at the cost of performance. For those who do not need the benefits of a RAID, JBOD is also supported.

The G-RAID 12TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array comes formatted for macOS 10.12+. After a simple reformat, it may also be used with Windows 8.1 and 10. Also included is a 20 Gb/s Thunderbolt cable, an AC power adapter, and a power cable. Protection is provided by a limited 5-year warranty.

    G-Technology 0G05753 reviews

    G-RAID 12TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array (2 x 6TB) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as advertised Set up as a Raid 1 I am getting roughly 200 MB/s read and write speeds which is good for a HD Raid 1 configuration. The USB 3.0 version is just as fast in the disk speed test on Raid 1 and I think the two have the same specs on Raid 0 as well so I'm not sure there is any advantage to the Thunderbolt 3 version unless you need/want Thunderbolt for some other reason. The unit is about as quiet as you would expect from two hard drives and a cooling fan. You can hear the drives clacking and the fan has a slightly noticeable sound. In some ways it is handy knowing when the unit is busy working but I decided to move it off my desk, which brings up another advantage of the USB 3.0 version: 6' active Thunderbolt cables are not cheap, USB cables are much cheaper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have for iMac Pro I bought this to go along with my new iMac Pro. I'm finally retiring my 2010 MacPro tower which had expansion bays for 3 drives which I striped together to create a 6TB drive for video editing. Because it is impossible to get the same capacity on an iMac Pro, an external drive is the only choice. This drive just about perfect. With the Thunderbolt 3 connection and 12TB capacity, I've doubled my storage and have lost no performance. I've been a user of G-Technology drives for years and have not had any problems. The one drawback is minor. Because this is still a hard disk array, it is a bit noisy. I unmount it and turn it off if I need to do a voice over recording. But the cost of going to a solid state drive with the same capacity was prohibitive. So, I make do. Also, because of power management, the drives spin down when not in use for a while. This causes a little delay when you go to access a file after spin-down, but it's not a problem. Again, to avoid it, you will need to shell out extra money for an SSD.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Professional Enterprise class drives I have been a fan of G-RAID products over the years. They always seem to provide a better product than their competitors. This product seems to have excelled those that have gone before. Well thought out, quality, performance product

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great I'm using it to edit 4k video (XAVC not transcoded to prores from Sony FS7 cameras) in FCPX with no problem. I'm also using it to run a second monitor through the hdmi out which is great. There's a little lag after the drive goes to sleep, but what drive doens't do that.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from G-Technology drives have always worked well for me I haven't been using this drive that long, but based on past performance of G-Tech drives I'm very happy with the purchase and would recommend it to others.
