Samsung Gear 360 overview

  • 1Description

The 2017 version of the Samsung Gear 360 allows you to broadcast live to friends and family in addition to recording 4K resolution video. It has also been redesigned with an easy-to-grip body and more compact camera head form factor. The Gear 360 lets you easily capture 360° spherical VR videos and photos that you can afterwards view with optional VR goggles or on 360 platforms such as YouTube 360 for an immersive experience in high resolution.

The camera features dual lenses that shoot everything around you at the same time, and it automatically stitches the captured images to provide you with a single, complete spherical image. The image can then be further edited, if you'd like, in VR editing software where you can even add effects.

Live broadcasting works by pairing the Gear 360 with your Samsung Galaxy smartphone (pairing to the free Gear 360 app) or computer, and then streaming to the platform of your choice, allowing your audience to join your adventures in real-time and in 360. Live broadcasting streams images in 1920 x 960 HD resolution. In regards to mobile devices, live broadcasting is limited to Samsung Galaxy phones and requires Nougat OS (Android 7.0) to be used.

Another way to connect with your audience is to use the Gear 360 app to convert the 360 content into standard video or photo formats that can be uploaded to social media. The app also allows you to add your own personal touch to your content by adjusting the view and layout of the images. You can select between five views: the native 360° View, Stretched View, Round View, Dual View, and Panoramic View.

The internal battery allows you to record for up to 130 minutes on a single charge (in 2560 x 1280 at 30 fps HD resolution). Everything is stored to a microSD card (not included) up to 256GB. The Gear 360 is dust- and splash-proof to be more convenient to use in your activities.

    Samsung Gear 360 reviews

Gear 360 4K Spherical VR Camera (2017 Version) is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 50.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for the price I'm focused almost entirely on video, so I can't speak to the photographic capabilities as compared other 360 cameras. As far as video is concerned though, having now compared this to a number of other sub-$400 360 cameras, I can confidently say that this is the best option I have seen. Don't be expecting crystal clear pictures and seamless stitching, but this is an excellent entry-level/consumer grade option. Biggest annoyance is that the computer software provided by Samsung for processing the images on your computer (the phone down-rezzes them a bit) is for PC only. Also the live stream feature is not yet supported on iOS so it's restricted to Android users at present.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best 360 camera for iOS users The pictures and videos come out great, good in low light too. The 2017 version specifically works with iOS but the app is still a bit glitchy. The camera does not connect to the phone every time, you'd have to manually disconnect and reconnect. The Facebook live feature in the app doesn't work, it crashed each time. But hey, baby steps. At least you can remotely control and live view on the app. You can also upload your images and videos to facebook through the app but this really brings down the resolution. My suggestion would be to convert your files on your computer (Windows only, no Mac support with their software yet).

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nice low Rez toy for Mac users There is no way to get the high quality content out of the camera using my Mac. Just low Rez proxies through my iPhone. Desktop app freezes and doesn't open on my machine (running Sierra and 64Gig RAM). Company description suggests the app can't do much, anyway. No editing. No way to export video in a finished 2D fashion (native files must be hosted by sites with limited 360 options). No way to save a particular still projection as a hi-rez image. Seems like Samsung is a terrific hardware company with little experience in software and reluctant interest in Mac users. While professionals in education, media, TV and film, tend to prefer Macs, the Gear 360 doesn't appear interested in supporting these folks. Disappointed my money was wasted. Prove me wrong and I'll gladly retract.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 360 is adding to our sales process I love using my Samsung Gear 360 to photograph our event décor and production details. When meeting a client in our office it's easy to place them front and center, with the Gear VR, to see what we have created for other clients and can create for them. The Gear 360 software makes linking to our Galaxy S8+'s to share images faster than ever and the LIVE streaming feature is done right! Our first 360 camera was the Ricoh ThetaS, which is very nice, BUT has very little memory and battery life (and cost almost twice as much). Recording 360 video at an event was too limiting and the streaming was not practical. The Samsung Gear 360 has a battery that lasts almost 2 hours and uses a microSD card for storage. We've loaded each of our Gear 360's with 64gb Samsung microSD cards and have more memory than we could possibly use recording at one event. The ThetaS had limited onboard controls requiring you to use the app. The Gar 360 has nice controls and a menu display allowing you to manage photos and recordings without the need for the APP. The time delay is a great feature too. Pro's: Size, Quality of Video and Images, Phone APP, onboard controls and menu display, interchangeable memory and battery life. Cons: Record/Photograph button is too easy to engage. A firmware update allowing either a quick double click or long press of the record button would be nice and would prevent mis-firings of the camera. Wish List: 1. A firmware update allowing either a quick double click or long press of the record button to prevent mis-firings of the camera. 2. For the Next Generation, upgrade the low light sensitivity. 360 will get cheaper and better with each generation so just make the leap to much lower light sensors and OIS so that families can begin recording and sharing 360 videos at celebrations. My industry will embrace your tech and help make it a household necessity. 3. Push the resolution limit. 4K all around or even 8k Do these and you won't need to lower the price, just make it with more pro like features and your full retail price would be a bargain.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The camera works, the software is very deficient for the Mac After some issues getting the camera to work with the iPhone 7 plus I was able to shoot some test video outside. the main issues came when I attempted to upload the files into Final Cut Pro X ( which has supposedly been upgraded to handle these types of files). I had to import the files from the camera into the phone to upload. This took significant time. I also attempted to use the Samsung Gear 360 desk top app. The app refused to recognize the camera. Before returning the camera to B&H I'll contact Samsung and see if I've done something stupid, or if the latest Mac system upgrade has left their app behind in the dust. I'll upgrade this review accordingly.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not a great experience if you leave your phone. The hardware seems absolutely top notch. And if you want to take photos and videos to view only on your Samsung camera, it's great. Very good resolution, and good performance. Unfortunately, that's where things end. Compatibility with Samsung VR headset = No. Compatibility with PC via USB connection = No. In fact, you need cyberlink director software to fix the images or movies to use with any other system or device (including Samsung's own headset). Perhaps my camera was defective. But the impression I get is that Samsung is taken by surprise that anyone would do more than view a movie on a Samsung phone, or post it on Facebook. A rather major oversight in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little camera This thing is pretty slick. With the app it is very easy to navigate and choose options. I don't quite understand time lapse exactly so I still need to figure it out. Great 360 camera for the price I do think the 360 edge meshing could get much better, but I'm not complaining.
