JLCooper ion Atem Overview

The ion Broadcast Switcher Panel from JLCooper is a hardware control panel for quick video switching in live production environments with Blackmagic Design ATEM switchers. It is compatible with ATEM software and can be used with your laptop or desktop computer. You can also use the switcher panel as a standalone unit with ATEM as a primary or secondary controller. It can be rack-mounted using the ion rack ears (sold separately).

The switcher panel can be used to control the Blackmagic Design ATEM 1 M/E and ATEM 2 M/E Production Switchers, ATEM Production Studio 4K, ATEM 1 M/E and ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K, and ATEM Television Studio models. It is suitable for mobile, sports, educational, corporate, computer, houses of worship, and other applications.

Great control unit overall with one quark

Overall, this is fantastic switcher. It is durable, the feel of the buttons are great; it does not feel cheap. You do know have to do some basic networking to get it to work. I have had it completely crash on me once during a show but I think it was when I changed switchers. There may be a firmware update but at least the switcher has been known to freeze. I was running it for 3 hours straight. I just turned it off and turned it back on to fix the problem. This was used on tour.

Got this panel for controlling my ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio switcher. It does the job very well. The panel is not made for programming, but as a live panel it is perfect (at least for me). If you get problems, JL Cooper has excellent customer service. The only negative: The lcd letters is a bit difficult to see from an angle. I have to put something under the panel to get it angled towards my position. There should be an option to angle the panel. For the price this is a perfect Atem panel for live events.

Can I use Atem switcher software at the same time?

Yes you can. The Ion can be used as a companion to the ATEM Software or you can use it as a stand alone panel for an ATEM Switcher.

Will this work with the new Blackmagic Constellation 2ME?

While some users may be able to get certain features to work, since the firmware of the JLCooper ion Broadcast Switcher Panel for Blackmagic Design ATEM (B&H# JLION) has not been updated for the Constellation series of ATEMs we therefore cannot recommend this panel for such use. The manufacturer lists several new ATEMs as compatible with it (due to firmware updates), yet none from the Constellation series.

Is the T-bar weighted? (take nice effort to push and smooth)

This panel has a Precision Hall Effect Aluminum T-Bar for smooth Transtion Control. You will be able to get very smooth and precise transitions when using this unit.

JLCooper does not state that the JLCooper ion Broadcast Switcher Panel for Blackmagic Design ATEM is compatible with the Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini series.

Yes, DVE transition is supported. Push the DIP and WIPE buttons in simultaneously.

When using this with the new 4 M/E ATEM, can this be assigned to control any of the M/Es? Could it be set to control an aux bus?

We are not sure it is compatible with the 4 M/E. We suggest checking with ion. A word of caution - it did not work out of the box. The ion actually completely locked up our 1 M/E Production 4K. Had to unplug the power to reset. This happened in the middle of live meetings. Ion offered a firmware workaround that I believe is temporary. It is working now.
