SAFETY FIRST: Observing the Sun without the proper protection may result in serious personal injury, including permanent eye damage and blindness, and/or damage to equipment. Never point an optic at the sun without an approved solar filter on the front of the optic. For direct solar viewing, viewing the sun through an optic, or when using cameras with an optical viewfinder, ensure your filter is ISO 12312-2 (also written as ISO 12312-2:2015) certified. Never use photographic neutral density filters for direct solar viewing, viewing the sun through an optic, or when using cameras with an optical viewfinder.

The Formatt Hitech 95mm Firecrest Neutral Density 5.4 Solar Eclipse Filter produces images with a neutral color tone and no color-cast or loss of sharpness. Its 18-stop exposure reduction, built-in infrared cut, and 5.4 density blocks radiation outside the visual spectrum that imaging sensors are able to detect, which can cause interference with capturing clear images, and creates a darkening of the entire image that makes it effective for solar and solar eclipse photography. With this filter, users can capture photographs with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. This is strictly a photographic filter and is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye.

Warning; under no circumstances should these filters be used to view a solar eclipse with the naked eye. These products are strictly for on-camera use. These filters do not offer the same level of optical protection as solar eclipse viewing glasses and using these to look directly at the sun before, during or after a solar eclipse could permanently damage your eyesight.

Formatt-Hitech will not be held liable for any costs, associated expenses or medical claims relating to damage to your eyesight as a result of improper use of these filters.

Due to the extremely long exposure times these filters make possible, the risk of light leaking in through the camera body and manifesting in your shot is high. We recommend that you take steps to mask the eyepieces/viewfinders and and ports to prevent this from happening. Many photographers use a low adhesive black tape for this purpose however it is your responsibility to ensure that anything you affix to your camera will not cause damage to the camera body or functionality. Another option is wrapping the camera in a thick black cloth although you should leave some areas of the body exposed to dissipate heat.

Even with the extreme density of these filters, we recommend you contact your camera manufacturer to assess the suitability of your camera for shooting directly into the sun. Formatt-Hitech will not be held liable for any damage caused by continued exposure of your camera sensor to direct sunlight with or without our filters in place.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice Solar Filter So far, I've only tested this filter on the midday sun. The image quality was very good. The sun spots show up nicely. After easily adjusting the white balance in post process, the image looks exceptional. I'm very satisfied and plan to use this filter on my primary camera w/ Sigma 150-600 during the Aug. 21st total solar eclipse.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solar Eclipse Filter Purchased this for the upcoming eclipse. Mounted the filter on my Nikon 200-500mm lens and took some test shots of the sun the day it came to the house. This filter is exactly what I need for shooting the eclipse!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It does what it is supposed to do and I would buy again This is a true neutral density filter unlike another(10x) that I recently bought which has magenta cast. I have used it to photograph the sun and can even see some sunspots. To get a yellow sun you will have to change your white balance. In the example included I used a shady white balance and it is not yellow as the sun is usually depicted. in addition to solar photography I can see uses for seascapes or waterfalls and cityscapes to get rid of people in the latter since a very prolonged exposure will be needed. You purchase will not be wasted on a one time event. The filter seems well made and I had no trouble mounting and removing from lens. If you buy you may also want pick up a step down ring to use on other lenses. I am subtracting one point because of price.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good, but not great It does the job, but it has two annoying issues. First, the threads do not screw into my Sigma 150-600 mm lens very well. Other filter brands thread into the lens much better. Note that I was able to work-around this somewhat by stacking with a Hoya UV filter. The Format Hitech filter threaded into the Hoya better then it threaded into the lens itself. Second, it does not have threads on the outside for filter stacking. This means pinch lens caps which grip onto those threads have trouble staying on. This is the worst filter I own, but I guess there's not much competition in the solar filter space. Perhaps a better solution would be to stack two 9-stop ND filters from a better brand.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product but should come with a useable case Optically a good product. But for the extremely high price I would have expected a much higher quality package to keep the filter in when not in use. The one included is ridiculous.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sun Photos, No Damage Works like a charm. Took a multitude of sun photos in prep for upcoming eclipse. Appears to have blocked out harmful visible light and in the IR spectrum. No damage to camera and especially no damage to my eyes. Would recommend. Would buy this brand and filter type again in other sizes if the need should arise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter at an affordable price! I am very impressed with the quality of this filter. Given the size, 95mm, the price is very affordable. I'm hoping to get some nice eclipse shots with it on my Sigma 150-600mm lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Some times you have to spend the money... Some times you have to spend the money to get the good stuff. Tried some cheaper filters from Amazon that I ultimately sent back. Decided to bite the bullet and try this one out and I'm glad I did. It's dark enough but not too dark so you can really play around with your settings. I would definitely buy it again!
