Really Right Stuff TA-3 Leveling Base Overview

The TA-3 Leveling Base with Low-Profile Knob and Platform with 3/8"-16 Stud from Really Right Stuff can level horizons for filming during a video shoot or for landscape photography. Your tripod's top plate can be replaced with the TA-3-VB or other industry standard 75mm video bowls. Therefore, the leveling base adapts right into the bowl, and it gives you the capability of leveling your horizon +/- 15°. Furthermore, with the built-in 12mm bull's-eye bubble level, it ensures your camera is leveled every time.

The top of the leveling base features a low friction anti-jam polymer plate with a 3/8"-16 male stud. Therefore, ball, gimbal, and fluid heads with the same female thread will screw directly to the base. After locking the level's low-profile knob in place, the base supports up to 25 lb of gear without slipping. In addition, the CNC machined 6061 aluminum leveling base has a Type II anodized finish, which makes it scratch- and corrosion-resistant.

I added this to my first series RRS TVC-34L tripod. Leveling is now almost an afterthought. No more finicky leg-length adjustments. Quality is outstanding, as expected from RRS, and made in USA.

It does not look possible to attach the hook that ...

It does not look possible to attach the hook that comes with the series 3 apex to the low-profile knob, as the hook is attached via a 3/8" screw. But the only place for a screw that I see in the picture is used to mount the low-profile knob and it's a female hex shape. Is this an accurate assessment?

Correct this would be an accurate assessment, there would not be an easy way to attach the the hook that comes with the Series 3 Apex to this head unfortunately.

can you install the hook from the longer versions Really Right Stuff TA-3 long onto this one?

No and this is really frustrating. It makes no sense that they would not provide an option to put a hook on the short handle. The longer handle has a hook, but the length of the long handle prevents you from lowering your tripod to its lowest position.

No, the GT1541T and GT2545T both do not offer 75mm ball drops in order to adapt to the Really Right Stuff TA-3 leveling base.
