SmallHD Focus overview

  • 1Description

Designed as a unified monitoring and power solution for Sony cameras that use NP-FW50 batteries, this FOCUS Sony Bundle from SmallHD can slim down your rig, while providing increased usability. The kit is centered around the SmallHD FOCUS monitor. A power output on the monitor allows the included dummy battery to power your camera right off the monitor's battery. An L-series battery along with a charger is included in this kit for powering the monitor and your camera. Check out the features for all the items included in this kit below.

  • FOCUS 5" On-Camera Monitor

Designed to add professional monitoring tools to DSLR and mirrorless cameras, the SmallHD FOCUS 5" On-Camera Monitor is bright, lightweight, and features a sharp display. The 800 cd/m² bright touchscreen 1280 x 720 IPS LCD panel can be viewed in daylight, and is driven by a single micro-HDMI input. Using the intuitive Swipe OS, you can turn on various monitoring tools like waveform, false color, and vectorscope, as well as focusing aids like peaking, with a tap. If your camera outputs UHD 4K over HDMI, the FOCUS will support that input resolution as well as HD and SD inputs. At the rear of the monitor, a single NP-F battery bay accepts a separately available L-series battery for power, while an integrated power output can also power your camera with a separately available DC coupler. A stand with tilt adjustment is included with the monitor for mounting atop your camera's accessory shoe or on a 1/4"-20 screw.

    Swipe OS
Built on SmallHD's intuitive PageBuilder OS, Swipe OS offers the same intuitiveness of a graphical user interface (GUI), though with touchscreen navigation. Rather than have confusing menus, this GUI allows you to selectively apply monitoring tools such as waveform, vectorscope, and focusing aids to up to 12 different "pages". Using the touchscreen, swipe through different preset pages and toggle monitoring tools on or off with ease.
    Camera Setup Integration
This monitor complements smaller cameras by providing power output and a headphone jack. The power output lets you power your camera directly from the NP-F battery (sold separately) mounted on the monitor, increasing runtimes over the standard batteries of many mirrorless cameras. If your camera doesn't have a headphone jack, the FOCUS de-embeds the audio from the HDMI stream for real-time feedback of audio.
    Convenient Mounting
The FOCUS monitor secures to your camera using the included FOCUS Tilt Arm via shoe mount or 1/4"-20 thread. The Tilt Arm enables 180° of tilt for convenient monitoring at nearly any angle. A cold shoe on the Tilt Arm lets you secure equipment (like a microphone, LED light, or wireless receiver) that would otherwise be displaced from the camera's accessory shoe.

  • FOCUS to Sony NP-FW50 Power Adapter

SmallHD's FOCUS monitors have a power output for smaller cameras, and with this FOCUS to Sony NP-FW50 Power Adapter, you can power your Sony A7-series mirrorless camera right off the monitor. Insert the dummy battery end into your camera and connect it up to the FOCUS monitor's output for power. Powering the camera using the montior's battery will result in a simplified power setup and longer shooting times between charges, compared to the standard internal batteries.

Note: Check your camera's manual to ensure compatibility with the dummy battery type.

SmallHD Focus reviews

FOCUS Sony Bundle is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don’t buy this product not built well I don’t know if my case was isolated or if others have had this problem. The product worked great accept for the battery release. When I would put on any battery whether it was the included one or not, it would get stuck and be difficult to remove. The button to release the battery on the back of the monitor would not allow for the battery to come out. You could not press the button down completely. When trying to remove the battery, I had to struggle to get it out. This put pressure on the device and caused the screen to crack. Even with a protector. Just something to lookout for. It is 600 dollars and this kind of thing should not happen.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome little monitor First of all, the monitor is super light weight, you won’t even feel that you have a monitor attached. The image quality is beautiful and the battery life is great. My only issue is the focus peaking. I got used to my GH5 camera’s beautiful and accurate focus peaking without distorting the image but instead of this method SmallHD is using 2 different methods which are all together not as good as any other method. One method just increases the contrast (and distorts the image) and the second is like false colors. Both methods are disappointing. And the camera’s built-in peaking does not go over the HDMI cable. When SmallHD will fix the issue, this will be a 5 start monitor

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I like it. But some considerations. Pros: Really amazing and high quality monitoring! It is the perfect size and very complimentary to my a6300/6500. It's really like it's made for it, instead of being some awkward add-on device. Ergonomically, it's great. Battery power is awesome and lasted an entire day of shooting a wedding, although for that particular day I powered the camera separately. Cons: It's not suitable for bright direct sunlight monitoring I'm afraid. It's bright for daylight, but direct sunlight left me having the unplug it from the camera and monitor through the viewfinder. I was really bummed about that. Another problem I've had is with the arm coming loose where it connects at the hotshoe mount. I've had to take a tool and tighten that, or else it would wiggle around. Unfortunately, I had this occur at a wedding shoot and did not have a tool. The monitor was flopping around a bit, which was unnerving.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No 4K 60fps support The good stuff: The idea is great, the size is perfect, the mount is just right. It could have been a great monitor especially as it shows my GH5's own focus peaking. The bad stuff: 1. the built in focus peaking sucks 2. Does not support 4K 60fps. This one I can not forgive. Any monitor that is geared towards professional use without 4K60fps support is just plain garbage. And as I figured from customer support (which one is great and responsive), none of the SmallHD monitors support 4K60fps. I can't even comprehend how this could be possible in 2018. Absolutely nothing is visible on the screen at 60fps. We film real estate and only shoot in 4k60fps...we have 3 GH5 and none has a monitor. Just bad. :(

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5 out of 5 based on performance to price Bought it for my 6300 and it works great even in bright sun with the accessory hood (sold separate) like this screen so much I use it on my FS5 all the time and ordered a second FOCUS for the 6300. Long battery life, Great color and sharpness, light weight, I feel like 5 inches is the perfect size compromise view and portability. Menus are super easy to use, great scopes and the LUT feature is extremely handy. The cables are proprietary with could be a pain but it solves the fragile tiny HDMI connection problem 100%... pretty sure you could hang the screen/battery from the cable without it coming disconnected. I read some posts about people thinking 720p isn't enough but in a 5 inch screen you couldn't see a difference if it was UHD... its absolutely on par with my Atomos Shogun and is much better than the stock 6300 screen and absolutely blows the fs5 LCD away.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Firmware Update Was Impossible and smallHD knows it I was really excited to get this monitor. I was satisfied with image and the tools. THe battery monitor is rubish but the new firmware promised to fix this. The issue is that with the firmware I had 3.0.4, it was impossible to update. It was like the "UPDATE FIRMWARE" button was missing. I contacted smallHD and spoke to Terrance and Keisha. They admitted to the issue and said "they are working on it" They had no idea how soon the fix would be figured out. As a professional, and I rely on my monitors. This was not acceptable with a brand new device. Thankfully B&H is amazing and they accepted my return without issue or complaint. I purchased the Atomos Ninja Flame instead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Prefect combination of size and features Absolutely love this monitor right from the get-go. As others have said, its the perfect compliment to the Sony A6300/6500 series (I use it attached to my Zhiyun Crane Gimbal, as well as on-camera for tripod shots), and for the Sony A7 series. One of my first jobs was using it with a Sony A7S (not mine) on an outdoor shoot in tropical sun. Usually, I hate the A7 because its so difficult to get focus with that tiny screen, but the SmallHD FOCUS made the camera totally usable, and a joy. It was quick and intuitive to set up one screen for focus and another for exposure / waveform and flick between the two. I also powered the A7S from the FOCUS monitor battery connector, but it didn't last that long (the A7 is known to chew through batteries). However, powering the FOCUS by itself, or powering the FOCUS along with a Sony A6500, for instance, it will go pretty much the whole day on the stock L-series supplied battery. Most times I'm using with my Sony FS7, where its a perfect compliment to the stock viewfinder. I've also used with my Phantom 4 Pro drone, as a second monitor feed from the P4 controller. You need to have the HDMI upgrade kit fitted to the Phantom controller, and you need to have some way to convert mini-HDMI out to micro-HDMI in (trying to find a conversion cable was easier said than done!), but it works a treat, and acts as a great second monitor for client views, etc. The cold shoe connection bracket is a little limited. It tilts nicely, but there's no way to rotate it horizontally quickly - although SmallHD say they're working on an adapter that will allow for quick rotation, coming later. The only stock HDMI cable that comes with the monitor is micro-HDMI to micro-HDMI. It would be nice to have a micro-HDMI to standard-HDMI as an additional option, to save buying additional adapters to get it plugged into full size cameras, like the FS7. Also the cable ties that plug onto the back of the monitor are a little weak - I broke one the second day. Definitely worth buying the FOCUS bundle kit with the power adapter for your particular camera, especially if you're a Sony A6000/6300/6500 user. For A7 users, its also a good option, but you'll still need a lot of extra L-series batteries!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely great for run-and-gun DSLR work! I mostly do run-and-gun documentary type of work this monitor is PERFECT for my Sony A7sII. It's form-factor, weight, daylight viewability, and size fit perfect with this small camera. This monitor makes judging focus a piece of cake even in bright daylight. I used it yesterday in bright daylight (90f) and had no issues with the brightness of the screen. All of this + the amazingly low price ( especially compared to the other SmallHD products) makes this a great external monitor to have.
