SmallHD Focus overview

  • 1Description

Designed as a unified monitoring and power solution for Canon cameras that use LP-E6 batteries, this FOCUS Canon LP-E6 Bundle from SmallHD can slim down your rig, while providing increased usability. The kit is centered around the SmallHD FOCUS monitor. A power output on the monitor allows the included dummy battery to power your camera right off the monitor's battery. An L-series battery along with a charger is included in this kit for powering the monitor and your camera. Check out the features for all the items included in this kit below.

  • FOCUS 5" On-Camera Monitor

Designed to add professional monitoring tools to DSLR and mirrorless cameras, the SmallHD FOCUS 5" On-Camera Monitor is bright, lightweight, and features a sharp display. The 800 cd/m² bright touchscreen 1280 x 720 IPS LCD panel can be viewed in daylight, and is driven by a single micro-HDMI input. Using the intuitive Swipe OS, you can turn on various monitoring tools like waveform, false color, and vectorscope, as well as focusing aids like peaking, with a tap. If your camera outputs UHD 4K over HDMI, the FOCUS will support that input resolution as well as HD and SD inputs. At the rear of the monitor, a single NP-F battery bay accepts a separately available L-series battery for power, while an integrated power output can also power your camera with a separately available DC coupler. A stand with tilt adjustment is included with the monitor for mounting atop your camera's accessory shoe or on a 1/4"-20 screw.

    Swipe OS
Built on SmallHD's intuitive PageBuilder OS, Swipe OS offers the same intuitiveness of a graphical user interface (GUI), though with touchscreen navigation. Rather than have confusing menus, this GUI allows you to selectively apply monitoring tools such as waveform, vectorscope, and focusing aids to up to 12 different "pages". Using the touchscreen, swipe through different preset pages and toggle monitoring tools on or off with ease.
    Camera Setup Integration
This monitor complements smaller cameras by providing power output and a headphone jack. The power output lets you power your camera directly from the NP-F battery (sold separately) mounted on the monitor, increasing runtimes over the standard batteries of many mirrorless cameras. If your camera doesn't have a headphone jack, the FOCUS de-embeds the audio from the HDMI stream for real-time feedback of audio.
    Convenient Mounting
The FOCUS monitor secures to your camera using the included FOCUS Tilt Arm via shoe mount or 1/4"-20 thread. The Tilt Arm enables 180° of tilt for convenient monitoring at nearly any angle. A cold shoe on the Tilt Arm lets you secure equipment (like a microphone, LED light, or wireless receiver) that would otherwise be displaced from the camera's accessory shoe.

  • FOCUS to Canon LP-E6 Power Adapter

SmallHD's FOCUS monitors have a power output for smaller cameras, and with this FOCUS to Canon LP-E6 Power Adapter, you can power your Canon 5D-series DSLR camera right off the monitor. Insert the dummy battery end into your camera and connect it up to the FOCUS monitor's output for power. Powering the camera using the montior's battery will result in a simplified power setup and longer shooting times between charges, compared to the standard internal batteries.

Note: Check your camera's manual to ensure compatibility with the dummy battery type.

SmallHD Focus reviews

FOCUS Canon LP-E6 Bundle is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little monitor. I have been using the Focus 5 for a couple of weeks and it really is a nice little thing. Sharp, bright and with the touch screen a big help in critical focus. Not 5 stars because I had to upgrade the software right out of the box before it worked and you really need a sunshade out doors. It's bright enough, but stray light does effect the quality of the image.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from No Users Manual, anywhere! So the monitor and the mounting system is great, I like the SwipeOS, after I figured out how to use it by trial and error, because there is NO USERS MANUAL, ANYWHERE! Come on, this thing DOES need a manual. And, on the Canon 5D Mark IV, using the monitor disables the cameras screen, and the touch screen on the monitor doesn't control the camera so you loose ALL the touch screen control that the cameras screen used to have. These are two major flaws!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cool idea, but there is stuff you should know The monitor itself is cool, but when in use the DSLR touch screen shuts off. All the analog controls still work so I didn't count off for that, but it's something you should be aware of before you buy it for your canon 80D. Keep in mind, this is a limitation of the Canon firmware and not the monitor, but I since the touch screen AF is one of the more prominent features of the camera, I would have appreciated a heads up on that. The reason I marked off 2 stars is because the cables are proprietary and feel rather flimsy and you can't really grab them correctly to connect and disconnect them. You sorta have to just yank the cord out by the cord. It feels like I'm going to break them...which requires you to buy knew ones from SmallHD because of the proprietary way they fit in the side. Also, the connection between the monitor and the very cool arm is so loose that the monitor kinda slouches on one side. It's so bad that when I spin the monitor the battery hits the arm if you don't physically life it up and it out of the way. It's weird because it doesn't appear to be necessarily that it does that. There is too just too much slack in the screw once the monitor is installed. I like...maybe even love the monitor itself but for the price the whole package needs to work together better than this one does.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's just so. I ordered the canon version, but the cable came to Sony. The tax was issued because the mark of origin was wrong. But I solved the problem of origin through b & h.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact and crisp This is a very handy tool for camera top or use on my gimbal for video. Great clarity and quality. The larger battery allows for many hours of shooting.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cannot use with polarized sunglasses! I'm using this monitor with my Canon 80D. Negatives: You cannot wear sunglasses when looking at this monitor, it turns black! Huge disappointment! Where do you find unpolarized sunglasses nowadays? You cannot change in camera settings on the monitor and have to unplug it to do so. Even turning the monitor off, you still have to unplug it from the camera body and use the DLSR menu. What? The HDMI plug from camera to monitor has a special sized cable end. You will not be able to plug in another brand's version. What do you do when the cable malfunctions from having to unplug it so often, or you need to use a longer cable? SOL. I am not going to saw the back corner off like some people are doing. The mounting arm that connects to the camera doesn't pivot. Not sure why they would have released this product without fixing that. Now we have to buy an upgraded version arm when SmallHD releases it. Ugg. They really should ship it to previously purchased customers for free. I don't like giving reviews like this, especially since this monitor is so helpful for shooting with a DSLR. 3 stars, but 5 stars for the below comments. The Positives: I really like many aspects of this monitor. It is very easy to use. The focus peaking rocks, especially changing the color of the outline quickly! The real-time swiping feature for customized viewing is fast and convenient. It is sharp and visible even in the sun (Squinting from sun brightness). I will be keeping this monitor and will likely use it often. I just hope SmallHD hears this and fixes these issues on their next release.
