Sonnet SF3-2CFST Overview

  • 1Description

Built using extruded aluminum for greater durability, the SF3 Series CFast 2.0 Pro Card Reader from Sonnet features dual CFast 2.0 slots and 40 Gb/s of Thunderbolt 3 bandwidth to quickly ingest footage from CFast 2.0 and CFast 1.0 memory cards. Thanks to this bandwidth, both card slots can be used simultaneously at speeds up to 1000 MB/s. When only one card slot is being used, data is transferred at speeds up to 550 MB/s. This card reader connects to your compatible Windows or Mac system using an use-replaceable Thunderbolt 3 cable, and is powered using the Thunderbolt 3 bus, which means that no external power supplies are required. Should the Thunderbolt 3 cable break, it can be replaced by removing the reader's back cover plates, unplugging the cable, and then plugging in a replacement.

Please note that this card reader requires Thunderbolt 3 and will work with Windows 10 or macOS 10.12.6 or later, including Mojave.

General Features

Built with an integrated Thunderbolt 3 cable, the SF3 Series CFast 2.0 Pro Card Reader employs its dual card slots to take advantage of the 40 Gb/s bandwidth offered by Thunderbolt 3. Capable of ingesting files simultaneously from two cards at concurrent data transfer speeds up to 1000+ MB/s, which is more than double the average ingest speed of USB 3.0 card readers, using the Sonnet reader makes for a significantly more convenient and efficient workflow.
Compact and Rugged
Measuring a compact 5.75 x 1.0 x 3.5", the SF3 Series CFast 2.0 Pro Card Reader is suitable for use in most workspaces, even where space is tight. The reader's shell is made from extruded aluminum, making it lightweight, and yet rugged enough to be transported in an equipment bag without fear of damaging the case.
Bus Powered by Thunderbolt 3
The SF3 Series CFast 2.0 Pro Card Reader connects directly to your Mac or Windows computer's Thunderbolt 3 port or at the end of a Thunderbolt 3 device chain. Requiring only a single cable to connect to your computer, this high-performance reader is bus powered, meaning that no separate power supply is required.
Replaceable Captive Cable
Through the use of a captive cable, the SF3 Series CFast 2.0 Pro Card Reader's Thunderbolt 3 cable remains firmly connected to it at all times. Should the cable ever break, it can be replaced by removing the reader's back cover plates, unplugging the cable, and then plugging in a replacement.

    Sonnet SF3-2CFST Reviews

SF3 Series CFast 2.0 Pro Card Reader is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from PHEE-NOM-MIN-AL! For months I had been using a USB 3.0 C-Fast card reader to import footage. To say the process was slow would be an understatement. The moment I plugged the?Sonnet SF3 Series CFast 2.0 Pro 3 Card Reader into the Thunderbolt port of my laptop, it was immediately apparent that my workflow had instantly become much easier. I haven't bench tested the import time to get an exact comparison. However, anecdotally, the Sonnet SF3 appears to be close to 5x-6x faster importing footage from my Canon C300 than the typical USB 3.0 method. If you're on the fence about investing in this unit, it's time to bite the bullet and get it. ?You won't be disappointed. ?The time savings alone is worth the cost of the unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Been using this for 2.5 years without issue. Ive been using these card readers for 2.5 years now without trouble of mounting or dismounting cards. I will say using both slots at once seems to bog down my machine quite a bit. I have a top of the line 2017 Mbp. Im mainly offloading Amira and C300 mkII footage. It takes about 1 hour for a 256GB card (while offloading gopros and other SD media). I like the robustness of this reader and like the fact you can unscrew it to replace the cable if needed. Great design. I wish I could figure out how to take full advantage of the offloading speed...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Be faster than Codex and Lexar Sure enough, Thunderbolt 3 is much faster than USB 3.0. And it is easy to clean up because it has a built-in cable. Connecting one memory and unplugging or inserting the other will not disrupt usage. The transfer rate is the maximum speed of the CFast. Even if you copy two memories simultaneously

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Was great! But now I'm not so sure. I've had this reader for about 6 months, and it's been great for me, blazing fast... until today. For some reason, after having it plugged in for awhile, both cards seem to be randomly ejecting and reconnecting every ~ 5 minutes.? I can confirm this isn't an issue with the laptop's connection ports. This can definitely not happen while ingesting. I guess that just because something works nicely out of the box, doesn't mean it has the quality to last.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast! I mean, really fast! Last week I put the card reader to the test. I filled and downloaded a Lexar?128GB Professional 3600x CFast 2.0 Memory Card. It took 5 minutes and 29 seconds to download (~389MB/s). It was amazing to watch the card download so quickly. Set Up: Connected to a 2016 (late) MacBook Pro via Thunderbolt 3. Pros: Fast, solid (robust construction) and easy to insert and remove cards, and no more cable adapters. Cons: A little bit larger and heavier than a standard reader. Comments:?As stated in publication reviews, the reader does get warm. The Thunderbolt 3 cable cannot be removed from the reader. Initially, I only wanted a single CFast slot or for the second slot to support a CF card. However, as pro cameras continue to move towards CFast the dual slots will be advantageous in the future.??Previously, downloading cards was a significant bottle-neck at sporting events. I do not foresee this as a problem anymore. I will provide an update in a few months.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from JUNK Thing doesn't work. Used it maybe 4x times and then it stopped downloading correctly. Crashed the computer. From the very beginning had issues when two cards were loaded and never wanted to dismount. Careful

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Mounting Trouble Lost a card using this. It's fast when it works but my Dell XPS laptop had to be rebooted for every card change, the last time I used it a card corrupted during mounting and I promptly set it on a shelf.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Robust This card reader is robust, built of metal and has a heavy feel and weight to it. It works well and is compatible with my editing system.

Has anyone used this with the Apple thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter to plug into a Mac with thunderbolt 2 ports?
    Asked by: Daniel
In order to use the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter you would need the device to have a female Thunderbolt 3 port. Since the cable is attached on the Sonnet SF3 Series CFast 2.0 Pro 3 Card Reader B&H # SOSF32CFST, it will not be able to connect to the adapter.

Will this work with a thunderbolt 2 connection on my 2014 iMac? What cable do I need?
    Asked by: Basil
I can't say every thunderbolt 3 dock will work but it works 100% with the caldigit dock when using the apple adapter between the dock and a thunderbolt 2 MacBook pro.
