Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

A fast and flexible wide-angle zoom, the FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM Lens from Sony is a wide-angle zoom designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras. Distinguished by its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, this lens offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and benefits working in low-light conditions. The optical design incorporates two extra-low dispersion elements to reduce chromatic aberrations along with two XA elements and three aspherical elements, which significantly controls spherical aberrations for a high degree of image sharpness and clarity. Additionally, a Nano AR coating has been applied to limit ghosting and lens flare for increased contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the optical assets, this lens is also notable for its inclusion of an 11-blade circular diaphragm to produce smooth, soft-edged bokeh with selective focus imagery. For controlling focus, two Direct Drive SSM AF groups are employed that are quick and quiet, and also lend more responsive control for manual focus operation. The lens also sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design to support shooting in inclement conditions and a dedicated focus hold button and AF/MF switch.

As part of Sony's esteemed G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve notably high resolution and sharpness through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations. Additionally, these lenses feature robust and intuitive-to-handle physical designs to benefit both photography and cine applications.
Wide-angle zoom designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras, this lens is also compatible with APS-C models where it provides a 24-52.5mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range for working in difficult lighting conditions.
Two XA (extreme aspherical) elements and three aspherical elements are incorporated into the optical design, which feature superior surface precision for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other spherical aberrations.
Two extra-low dispersion elements are featured in the lens design and help to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
Two Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) autofocus groups offer quick, quiet, and precise focusing performance that is ideal for both stills and video applications.
Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures. Additionally, the front element has a fluorine coating to guard against fingerprints and dust from adhering to it.
Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 reviews

FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Modern Technological Marvel I'm a fine art outdoor photographer, and have used many different lenses over the past 50+ years. This is one lens that lives up to the hype. It's almost as sharp as the best Zeiss wide angle prime, and at every focal length from 16mm to 35mm. Like all 35mm format lenses, sharpness tails off after f11.0 due to diffraction. But the consistently outstanding clarity and sharpness throughout this zooms' range make this a lens that can match the capabilities of the Sony A7riii camera. And I'm enjoying both immensely. Sony has pulled off a major balancing act with this gem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharper than my 24-70 GM Just picked up this lens. Did my standard check of it on the brick wall of my house at various focal lengths and apertures mounted on my a7r2 on my rrs tripod. Then swapped in my 24-70 2.8 GM to take the same shots in the 24-35mm range without moving the camera and tripod. Brought the images up in Lightroom in compare mode. This lens is so sharp in the corners that it outperforms the 24-70 GM at 24mm and 35mm. (The 24-70 is extremely sharp and I highly recommend it as well.) Corners are sharp even wide open at 2.8. Nice to know I can take my 16-35 GM out for landscape shooting with the knowledge it will be incredible from 16 through 35. That will cover most of my shots allowing me to travel lighter. This is a fantastic lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens I've had the lens for a few weeks now. Been running it through its paces. Shot a few events (with very difficult lighting) and some landscape. The lens performed perfectly. Just one advise, if you're going to put a UV filter on this, make sure to buy top quality. I bought a medium grade Hoya for it, that cost me over $100, and I find that with the filter on, I get WAY more flares when shooting sunrise and sunsets. Without the filter, I don't see any, even when I try to make it happen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Holy Cow I Shoot with the A7Rll the Image quality is absolutely amazing never expected a wide angle zoom to be this good. I also have the 24-70F2.8GM but this lens blew me away if you don't already own it you should it's that good. Here are some sample photos to demonstrate the amount of cropping you're able to do. shot at 35mm F2.8 1/60 ISO400

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most amazing lens I took the Sony 16-35 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8, and the 70-200 f/2.8 to Hawaii in August (all rented) and almost never took the 16-35 off my a9. For what I do, adventure/travel with my family, it was incredible: fast focus, ultra sharp edge to edge, kept up with he a9’s tremendous focusing speed and accuracy. So I bought one. Best lens I’ve owned yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top quality lens from Sony I was reluctant to spend the money on this wide zoom for my A7Rii, but have no regrets now. It is expensive, but if you need a high quality wide zoom to take advantage of the A7Rii resolution, this is a great lens. I also own the 24-70 f2.8 GM and I honestly think this 16-35 is even sharper than the 24. Great lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens Used the lens for the first time today during one of my real estate shoots. Loved everything about it. I can't wait to use it during some of my upcoming weddings. I know it's expensive, but it really is worth having. I had the 12-24 previously, that is an ok lens as well, but I just liked the 16-35 better overall. I actually think the price jump is worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly What I've Been Looking For For my Sonys (A7RIII, A7RII, A6500) I've been looking for sharp, fast wide-angle lenses in the sub 35mm focal range, and have also been looking for something fast to specifically cover the 35mm focal length on my full-frame Sony's. I typically buy prime lenses and already own the Nikon 20mm f/1.8G ED, which I pair with my D750. Said 20mm is great, but its kind of squeaky when focusing during video, and the D750 is just a generally a loud camera, which is why I avoid using it during events. I thought seriously about buying the 18mm Batis but really didn't like that $1500 price tag for that lens. I own several Zeiss lenses, so I appreciate their quality; but, based upon my needs and the reviews, I couldn't justify paying that kind of money for an 18mm prime lens. So, after reviewing and reviewing, I decided to go with the 16-35 GM, and I'm glad I did. This 16-35mm GM pretty much covers the entire spectrum of wide angle focal lengths, and it does so very well. 16mm, 18mm, 20mm, 24mm, 28mm, and, yes, 35mm are all superbly sharp. Yes, despite what you may have read about the 35mm focal length on this lens, it, too, is superb wide open. I own the Sony 24-105, as well. In my opinion, 35mm on this lens is sharper than 35mm on that lens and its faster (f2.8 v f4). Plus, the focal length ring on the 16-35 is smoother, as the focal length ring on the 24-105 is kind of stubborn between 105mm-70mm.Both lens are about the same size. Only con I've noticed with the 16-35 GM is pincushion distortion at 16mm, which can be corrected with a mouse click in Lightroom and is automatically corrected in Capture One Sony. The price is steep, but you're getting several lenses in one package. I've heard the 16-35 Sony Zeiss is good, as well; but, it's not as sharp nor as fast. If you're on a budget, the 10-18 is a great option. It's small, quiet, stabilized, and sharp at the lower apertures if stopped down. I own it and use it for video on my A6500. But if you're looking for the best wide-angle lens out there, this may be it. I highly recommend this lens.
