Sony FE 12-24mm f/4 G Overview

Portable Design, Broad Versatility
Ultra-wide and versatile, the Sony FE 12-24mm f/4 G is a flexible, everyday wide zoom characterized by its nimble design and well-rounded performance that makes it ideal for architectural, interior, and landscape subjects. And, as a G Lens, priority has been given to the optical design, which specifically helps to reduce distortion and achieve high sharpness across the frame for accurate rendering and high resolution.
Sophisticated G Optics
  • Four aspherical elements are featured in the optical design to control spherical aberrations in order to produce a high degree of sharpness while also limiting distortion.
  • One Super ED and three ED elements are used to suppress chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.
  • Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
  • Constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range.
Intuitive Handling and Sleek Design
  • Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor AF system and internal focus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance that is suitable for both stills and video use.
  • Customizable focus hold button on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
  • Integrated lens hood helps reduce flaring and also provides some physical protection to the front lens element.

Sony FE 12-24mm f/4 G Reviews

Great lens

Great lens. Super wide. At 24mm FL, perfectly rectilinear and with even lighting. At 12mm FL, a little fisheye distortion and lighter in the center of the photo, but still very useable. Defects could be easily corrected with photoshop or equivalent photo editing program. I now have 3 lenses for my 61MPix Sony a7RV camera - this 12~24mm; a Sony FE 4/24-105 G OSS; a SONY FE4.5-5.6 100-400 GM OSS; plus a 2x teleconverter. With the 400mm plus 2x teleconverter I can take detailed pictures of the moon clearly showing small details of every crater (using a heavy tripod)

Good & Bad

I purchased this lens with very high hopes as I wanted a wide angle zoom lens with a pretty broad range for landscape photography. I had seen in several videos that the newer lenses for today's mirrorless cameras are crazy sharp. I'll start with the positives: - Very well constructed, heavy lens - Great wide angle focal range - Very fast zoom Negatives: - No manual focus switch. It does have a focus ring but I couldn't tell that it was doing anything when I rotated it. - Images look good at 25% on screen in Photoshop and Lightroom but when zoomed in to 100% very soft focus and not much detail. I sent this lens back and opted for a 14mm f/1.8 fixed focal length for my wide angle shots. I really wanted this to be a great all-around lens but in the end, like the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Sony's marketing department for sure knows where to draw the dividing line and it clearly shows in image quality. If you're doing any kind of professional work and want tack sharp images you have to pony up the extra cash and get the G line of lenses with f/2.8 or better.

How weather sealed is this lens?

How weather sealed is this lens?
Asked by: Stanley
The front element or elements of the lens move when the zoom ring is turned, so my presumption is that water could get in between that moving assembly and the stationary outer barrel (and hood) of the lens. I don't KNOW that that's the case, but it seems wisest to assume the worst and behave cautiously.

How does the optical performance of this lens at f8 or f11 compare to the more expensive f/2.8 model?
Asked by: Joel
The Sony FE 12-24mm f/4 G Lens has better center sharpness at all apertures than the f2.8 version. The f2.8 lens exceeds with edge sharpness by outperforming the f4 version especially at f4, 5.6, 16 and 22. At f8 and f11, the f4 version has better center sharpness but the edge sharpness is nearly identical in both lenses.

question

Who used it with Sony a7sII for shooting video? What about auto focus? I want to use it with Zhiyun stabiliser and auto focus with face detect is very important for me. I can't choose between this lens and Zeiss 16-35 F/4.0.
Asked by: Alexandr
Both lenses will AF during video but the Zeiss 16-35mm will be faster.

Is there a way to use a circular polariser with this lens without buying an expensive filter holder? What is recommended?
Asked by: Jane
No, there isn't. But I would point out that a circular polarizer is not good to use with UWA lenses. It creates banding in the sky.
