Sony 12-24mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

Ultra wide and versatile, the FE 12-24mm f/4 G Lens from Sony is a flexible zoom lens for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, characterized by its constant f/4 maximum aperture. Benefitting the wide field of view is a sophisticated optical design that incorporates aspherical and low dispersion glass elements to control both spherical and chromatic aberrations for improved sharpness and clarity. A Nano AR Coating has also been applied to individual elements to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in bright, backlit situations.

In addition to the optical attributes, this lens is also distinguished by a Direct Drive SSM autofocus system, which benefits both stills and video application with its quick, quiet, and precise performance. The lens also sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design to support shooting in inclement conditions and a dedicated focus hold button and AF/MF switch.

Ultra wide-angle zoom designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras, this lens is also compatible with APS-C models where it provides an 18-36mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range.
Four aspherical elements are featured in the optical design to control spherical aberrations in order to produce a high degree of sharpness while also limiting distortion.
One Super ED and three ED elements are used to suppress chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.
A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
A Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor AF system and internal focus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and also contributes to more natural, intuitive manual focus control.
A dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.

Sony 12-24mm f/4.0 reviews

FE 12-24mm f/4 G Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW!!!! SUPERB!!! Light!!! I put it on my A7RM2 and is AWESOME handheld or on tripod. No softness at sides or vignetting even in dim to dark light like a sunset or city night shot. I have been using the SEL1018 in full frame mode for two years (great lens but some corrections in post are needed) and this lens is a great buy and native and lighter than any other. It allows for a two lens bag SEL1224G and SEL24240 to keep it light and small. I did a full moon shot (HDR type) @ 24mm over a beach and stars across the frame were also sharp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this lens! I've been a fan of wide angle lenses for years, ever since 40 years ago, I put a cheap 21mm on a Pentax. I shot film for years and loved the Rodenstock 35mm and 45mm Grandagons for 6x9cm format. This lens is just as good. Some reviewers have complained about flare but it's to be expected with the front element curvature required for short focal lengths. I also own a 10mm Voigtlander but the Sony 12-24mm is on my camera most of the time. I tried to put up a couple of photos but the upload timed out three times.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The performance is fantastic edge to edge! I did a comparison review vs the Canon 11-24mm and Tamron 15-30 and was blown away at how impressive this small lens is with edge to edge sharpness that was superior to either of the other lenses tested. The size and weight alongside this level of performance makes it a fantastic package! Sure you need to get an adapter for filters but that goes for many super wide lenses so no big deal. Sony could have called this a GM lens easily based on its performance! Here is a comparison review:

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Wide Angle Lens I went on a trip recently and discovered when I got home how much I needed a good wide angle option for my Sony A7R II. This lens was announced and I had to pre-order it because I didn't want to miss another great photo due to not having a wide angle option. I couldn't be happier with the results. The lens is a quality build with great results in the photos.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sharp but not flare resistant For its size, weight and sharpness, it is an amazing value. However it doesn't handle flare all that well. But if you want a compact, ultra-wide zoom in an E Mount, this is the one. It is very sharp corner to corner. Distortion is well corrected in Adobe lens profiles for Lightroom. This lens requires the more expensive 150mm filters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just about perfect for my needs I shoot architectural photography. I need wide angle. My previous cameras were Canon and Nikon but switched to Sony about 2 years ago. Now that I'm almost 80, I needed something light weight and the A7RII fit the bill. My first lens was the 16-35 F4. It was an acceptable zoom but the sharpness at times was just a little off and bothered me. I sold the lens and went with the wonderful Zeiss Batis 18mm F2.8. FABULOUS...but I needed more flexibility than 18mm. When shooting the exterior of a condo it was difficult to capture the entire building. I also needed wider when trying to capture small rooms. I ordered the 12-24 hoping this would be the answer to my problem. Yep. Sure was. Sharp, lightweight and wide when I need WIDE! However, the first few times I used it, It was so easy to get carried away with 12mm. Lots of distortion and difficult to correct with cropping. Thankfully, the A7RII allows it without losing a lot of resolution. I now find myself being more careful and shooting mostly between 14 and 16mm. But am very grateful to have 12mm when trying to capture those 30 story condos on Wilshire Corridor. I also thought I would miss the F/2.8 for shooting exterior twilights in windy conditions but the F/4 works just fine with a little ISO boost. I would highly recommend this lens to anyone who needs a wide zoom flexibility.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for real estate / architecture! Let me first get out of the way my only complaint: light flares.... Closer to my 10-18 Sony than my Zeiss Loxia 21. If this lens handled light flares like my Loxia, it would be a 5+ star lens. That aside this lens is in every way a huge upgrade over my Sony 10-18 f4. I've used that lens for my wide angle real estate work and it's done fine, but I wasn't truly happy. This lens is a huge step up. In fact, I probably won't take it off my A6300 at all and expect that it will handle all of my real estate and architecture work for a long time to come. It's sharper, has less distortion, and things just look better. I wish I had this lens for real estate from the beginning :-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mostly great. This lens is sharp at virtually all apertures. It is light and feels well made. My only complaints is that lens flare is rather bad (in my hands anyway) and that it cannot take screw-on filters. I may invest in a Nisi 150mm filter holder, but it is not available at B&H to date and I'm not entirely comfortable buying from other vendors. I may have been happier with the 16-35 F2.8 GM, but this lens complements my 24-70 2.8 GM quite well.
