I purchased the cellular version of the tablet do I have to establish service before I’m able to use? Or will it operate the same as a WiFi only model should I choose not to establish service immediately ?

Yes the tablet will operate normally immediately to your WiFi as soon as you search for your router name and enter your password just like your phone. You will have to get with your cellular provider for the non WiFi part if you are away from WiFi.
