Apple MacBook Pro overview

  • 1Description

Experience the innovative interface of the Touch Bar in the mid 2017 silver Apple 15.4" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar.

The Touch Bar places controls right at your fingertips and adapts to different apps to provide useful functions without having to navigate complex menus or memorize keyboard shortcuts. Replacing the function keys in the top row of the keyboard, the Touch Bar features a Retina-quality display and supports multi-touch input.

The power button has been upgraded with a Touch ID sensor, so you can quickly log into your MacBook Pro using your fingerprint. You can also use Touch ID to make purchases over the web, thanks to Apple Pay. Touch ID enables a quick, accurate reading of your fingerprint and uses sophisticated algorithms to recognize and match it with the Secure Enclave in the Apple T1 chip.

The system features a 7th Gen Kaby Lake 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, 16GB of 2133 MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory, a 512GB PCIe-based SSD, four Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports, a Force Touch trackpad, a keyboard with a 2nd-gen butterfly mechanism, stereo speakers with double the dynamic range of its predecessor as well as improved bass, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 wireless technology, and even a 3.5mm headphone jack. macOS High Sierra is the installed operating system.

Please note that this Mac may come with an earlier version of macOS. You can upgrade to the latest version through the Mac App Store app.

Touch Bar
The Touch Bar replaces the function keys that have long occupied the top of your keyboard with something much more versatile and capable. The multi-touch, Retina-quality display changes automatically based on what you're doing, from showing traditional system controls, such as volume and brightness, to more directly interacting with or browsing through content. Intelligent typing features like emoji and predictive text improve the typing experience, and you'll be able to customize the Touch Bar to fit your needs. The Touch Bar can also adapt to apps, such as Mail, Safari, Messages, and even third-party apps like Adobe Photoshop, so you'll have access to useful functions previously hidden in menus.
Touch ID
A Touch ID sensor has been integrated into the power button, so you can quickly log into your account, even when another user is logged in. You can also use it with Apple Pay to securely purchase things over the web, thanks to macOS Sierra.
Retina Display
The 15.4" Retina Display has a 2880 x 1800 resolution and features brighter LED backlighting than its predecessor as well as an increased contrast ratio, delivering deeper blacks and brighter whites. Its larger pixel aperture and variable refresh rate make it more power efficient than previous generations. It also supports the P3 color gamut, which allows for more vibrant colors. This ensures true-to-life pictures with realistically vivid details, which are essential for graphic design, color grading, and editing.
Force Touch Trackpad
The Force Touch trackpad on the 15.4" MacBook Pro takes all the capabilities of multi-touch and adds force sensors that detect subtle differences in the amount of downward pressure you apply. This lets you have a deeper connection to your content, bringing more functionality right to your fingertip. It also introduces haptic feedback to MacBook Pro — allowing you not just to see what's happening on the screen, but to feel it. With multi-touch, you can use realistic gestures like swiping or pinching to switch between apps, navigate your content, and get the most out of your desktop space.
Thinner & Lighter
The 15.4" MacBook Pro features a redesigned enclosure design and all-metal unibody construction that creates a rigid and dense notebook that is also thin and light. At just 15.5 mm thin, the 15.4" MacBook Pro weighs just four pounds.
Audio
The speakers have been totally redesigned to provide as much as twice the dynamic range and up to 58 percent more volume, with two-and-a-half-times louder bass for maximum boom. Plus, they're connected directly to system power, enabling up to three times more peak power.
macOS Sierra
The 15.4" MacBook Pro runs macOS Sierra, which features Siri integration, Universal Clipboard, Apple Pay on the web, and memories in Photos.
Thunderbolt 3
Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes the reversible USB Type-C connector. Doubling the speed of its predecessor, Thunderbolt 3 features a maximum throughput of 40 Gb/s when used with compatible devices. The connector also transmits data via USB 3.1 at up to 10 Gb/s, and dual-bandwidth DisplayPort 1.2 allows you to connect up to two 4K displays simultaneously or one multi-panel 5K display. The Macbook Pro has four ports, with each pair using a dedicated bus.

    Apple MacBook Pro reviews

15.4" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (Mid 2017, Silver) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 47.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A dazzeling machine with a few flaws! I had to replace a failed mid-2011 MBP 17 that I adored! Failed two months AFTER Apple stopped fixing it for free. I am disappointed that I now need multiple adapters to continue using my external Thunderbird backup hard drive, wireless mouse, and the connection to the television to display movies. The 'touch bar' is more gimmick than functional, although it may simply take time to adjust to its use. The display IS spectacular despite the smaller screen dimensions. The flash hard drive is amazingly responsive and boots quickly. B&H's website is awesome and their provided service is stellar! ! I would recommend B&H to friends who want any of the products they stock.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best MackBook Pro Ever The new MacBook Pro 2017 it is the future. It is very attractive, extremely powerful, portable and impressive slim. I gave five stars for: the Kaby Lake processors (2.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i7), the stunning Retina Display (2880x1800) and the Trackpad (159x99mm). It is great: the new color Space Gray, the Touch Bar (!!) and the Touch ID fingerprint. I found excellent the quality of: the 6GB RAM, the SSD disk and butterfly keys with backlit. With Parallels Desktop (virtual machine) you can work indifferently with Mac OS Sierra (the best OS) or Windows. Really I can't work without the friendly Spaces of Mac OS. When I use a PC is a job, when I use the MacBook is a pleasure.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent laptop, just overpriced I've had this MBP for 1 month now. I love the build, the screen, and the native Unix environment. However, the battery performance is not as awesome as they have advertised. I often use an external monitor and open up a lot of browser tabs and I would say on average the battery lasts around 4-5 hours. Not bad, just not meeting the expectation. Not to mention that the laptop sometimes has problem waking up from sleep when connected to the external monitor. Sometimes it just freezes and I would have to manually restart it. Overall, it is a great product but really not living up to its price tag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Had concerns but no longer Like many, hearing about the new MBP's just made upgrading seem to be a pain. My 2013 13" MBP Retina was still going strong but for awhile now I have wanted a bigger screen but the new MBP's annoyed me with the lack of ports I need (e.g. HDMI, SD, USB). I finally made the plunge and went with a 2017 15.4" MBP and I am loving it. The new keyboard? I actually really like it, it is super fast and feels great. After a day typing on it, I picked up my old 2013 MBP and the keyboard felt so fluffy and funny. The keyboard was a potential issue and thats why I decided on the 2017 vs the 2016 model (heard there were issues). I have purchased two adapters and now have all the ports I need which is great because I had two adapters with my 2013 MBP as well (Ethernet, VGA).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DOA After about one hour of use, my new MacBook Pro screen went black and would not restart, even after following all published reset methods. The laptop got so hot I was literally worried it might catch on fire. The Apple Genius Bar was utterly unhelpful, offering to send the brand new laptop with AppleCare+ in for refurbishment, speculating the main board was bad. Maybe I just found the needle in the haystack or maybe Apple quality control has really slipped.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful piece of machinery As an educator, designer, and game developer that uses maya, unity, and unreal, I have no regrets with this purchase. I typically would prefer a windows machine, but I was more interested in game development for the iOS. Portability was also a deciding factor. It really depends on what you need it for. I would sill prefer if the MacBook Pro came with an 8gb graphics card vs the 32gb of ram, but 16gb of ram and a 4gb graphics card is enough power for me and most people. You can?t beat the educator price with no tax from B&H!!! Best deal on the market for this Mac. Absolutely gorgeous computer. The touch bar will take a minute to get use to, but nothing to worry about. If Apple wanted to dominate the market, they should include the touch screen for designers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value from a Great Store Got this MacBook Pro on sale and saved much over local and other pricing. I have been a loyal B&H purchaser since the middle 1980s. I am always pleased at the quality, selection, and pricing of their merchandise. Some users have complained about the quality of the keyboard on these new Macs. I have not experienced any issues. Other users have also complained about the Touch Bar. I find I have used it more than I had previously thought that I would. a As for speed, I am very impressed with the performance of this machine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Upgrade, USB-C is awesome I upgraded from a late 2013 rMBP 15 with all the bells and whistles as the battery swelled up had to find a worthy upgrade. Initially the USB-C was a deterrent after reading everyone moan online, but after using it, USB-c is actually more convenient than all the other ports, so long as you have the proper hub. I was using my former rMBP as a desktop replacement docked with external monitors, and the newer switch to USB-C has actually cleaned up most of my dock experience. Performance wise, its similar to the older 2013 rMBP 15 maxed out w Nvidia GPU. Ive found the newer machine to do faster disk writes, and maybe 10-20% increase in bulk photography and video editing, so not a huge jump. The Touch Bar is a nice addition, but not necessary. I prefer all the old school keys, as I usually run this docked, but at times, the slide bar is really convenient, esp when editing. The keyboard feel, is much more improved over the 2014 MacBook 12's slim butterfly keys, but I still miss the old push keys of the 2013 Mac's. However, I found I can actually type faster and with less errors on the new machine with butterfly switches, as the key stroke physically depresses or doesn't, rather than slightly wobble, which the older 2013 keyboard keys had. I found if takes a little more force to type than the older keys, but overall more accurate. Trackpad is HUGE. I thought it would be an issue, but so far its been nothing but an amazing experience; the palm rejection is clever and has never skipped a beat. Battery life I've been seeing around 6-9 hours depending on load. I wish they kept the magsafe magnetic breakaway connector, as well as the LED apple logo. Love the new space gray, and chiseled form factor, reminds me of the iPhone 5s, my favorite phone design of all time.
