Apple iMac overview

  • 1Description

Apple weds high-res 4K visuals into its sleek, 5mm thin, mid 2017 21.5" iMac with Retina 4K Display. With a 4096 x 2304 screen resolution, this iMac provides 1 billion colors and 500 nits of brightness, which is 43% brighter than the previous model. The Retina 4K display also features a wider color gamut. Using a P3-based color gamut, the Retina 4K display provides a larger color space that more equally represents red, green, and blue, as compared to standard sRGB displays. And with more available colors, the images will appear more vivid and reveal greater detail, with more balance and precision.

The iMac's processor has been upgraded and now houses a 7th-gen Kaby Lake 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5 Quad-Core processor that can be overclocked up to 3.8 GHz, as well as 8GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 RAM. Visuals are powered by a dedicated AMD Radeon Pro 560 graphics card with 4GB of vRAM, and for storage, there is a 1TB Fusion Drive.

Outfitted with 802.11ac Wi-Fi and backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n for speedy hook-ups to your home network, this iMac is also configured with Bluetooth 4.2, as well as a UHS-II SDXC card slot, two 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports, four 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 Type-A ports, a Gigabit Ethernet jack, and a FaceTime HD camera. It also has a Kensington lock slot for added security.

Apple's 21.5" iMac with Retina 4K Display (Mid 2017) operates using 100-240 VAC at 50-60 Hz and includes an Apple Magic Keyboard, an Apple Magic Mouse 2, a Lightning to USB cable, and a power cord. The installed operating system is macOS High Sierra, and protection is provided by a limited 1-year warranty, which can be extended using AppleCare.

Please note that this Mac may come with an earlier version of macOS. You can upgrade to the latest version through the Mac App Store app.

General Features

21.5" Retina 4K IPS Display
Whether your iMac is in your studio, living room, or kitchen, the display is the focal point. With a 4096 x 2304 screen resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio, you'll be able to playback 4K content natively. The IPS panel allows for wider viewing angles so more people can enjoy the display without having to crowd around it. With a dedicated AMD Radeon Pro 560 graphics card and 4GB of vRAM, the iMac delivers 4K visual effects and 3D graphics, as well as video editing capabilities that can tackle multicam projects in Final Cut Pro X with up to five streams of full-res 4K video, as well as the ability to edit 360° video and create 3D VR content.
7th-Gen Kaby Lake Quad-Core Intel Core Performance
The iMac houses a 7th-Gen Kaby Lake Intel Core i5 Quad-Core processor that can reach a stock speed of 3.4 GHz. It can also be overclocked up to 3.8 GHz, thanks to Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. The 7th-gen Kaby Lake Intel processor uses low voltage for better energy efficiency while still providing fast performance needed to run processor-intensive applications such as Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro. Combined with 8GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 onboard RAM, the iMac allows you to multitask quickly and efficiently.
External Displays
The iMac simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and either one 5120 x 2880 (5K) external display at 60 Hz with support for 1 billion colors, two 3840 x 2160 (4K UHD) external displays at 60 Hz with support for 1 billion colors, or two 4096 x 2304 (4K) external displays at 60 Hz with support for millions of colors.
Thin Design
The iMac maintains its 5mm profile, which is up to 40% less volume than the 2011 iMac. Its display panel is 1.4mm thin.
802.11ac Wi-Fi & Bluetooth 4.2
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, you're instantly connected to all your favorite content. Bluetooth 4.2 wireless technology is also built in, so you can connect accessories such as a wireless keyboard and mouse.
Gigabit Ethernet
For a more reliable network connection, take advantage of wired Gigabit Ethernet technology.
Thunderbolt 3
Two Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports come standard on all iMac models, each delivering up data transfer speeds of up to 40 Gb/s external drives and cameras, plus twice the bandwidth for video and display connectivity. Thunderbolt 3 also supports 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 and DisplayPort 1.2. Thunderbolt 2, HDMI, DVI, and VGA output is also supported using adapters (sold separately).
USB 3.0
With USB 3.0, you can transfer large files in seconds instead of minutes. Every iMac comes with four 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 Type-A ports - with speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 - and you can connect all your USB-compatible devices, including your iPhone, iPad, iPod or digital camera.
FaceTime HD Camera
A built-in FaceTime HD camera allows users to use apps such as FaceTime and Skype for video calls.

    Apple iMac reviews

21.5" iMac with Retina 4K Display (Mid 2017) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 35.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast. Sexy. Upgradeable (sort of) 2009 iMac 27 (2.66 i5 quad core) had its hard drive fail. I didn't wan to spend $ to fix an 8 year old machine. Having seen the 2017 iMacs recently updated, I decided on the 21.5 4K with the 3.4 Core i5 with the Radeon Pro 560. Kept the standard 8 GB RAM and 1 TB Fusion Drive since I can *technically* updgrade both in a few years. I went with the smaller iMac this time to save some $$$ and I like the performance of the hardware in this 21.5 4K. Been using it for a few weeks now and love it. Obviously it is several orders of magnitude faster than my old iMac. But I really like how brilliant the screen is. The keyboard is easy to type on and I like both the keyboard and mouse have built in rechargeable batteries. Overall, this is a great value vs performance IMO and I love B&H pricing, no tax, no shipping!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New iMac Outshines the Old It was time to upgrade my mid-2011 21.5" iMac since the upcoming Mojave update wouldn't work on it. And it was becoming increasingly slow as websites use more and more computing power. Ordering from B&H was quick and easy. I was even able to split the purchase since I had a gift card I wanted to use towards part of the purchase. It arrived as stated and was well packaged as are all Apple products. I have to admit that I had my doubts about the process of transferring all of my apps and data from the old to the new, but no worries. The transition with Migration Assistant was virtually seamless. I was really impressed. Love my new iMac and the purchase experience from B&H. Saves sales tax (at least for now).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect All In One If your looking for a new iMac this is the one to get if you need it for just basic computing and extra kick when you need it, it has it. The 3.4ghz is quick and that with the fusion drive it fires up very quickly, 21.5 inches is perfect for having more than a couple windows open all at the same time, great all in one. Apple hit the spot with this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Machine. Fast enough for day to day use. This iMac replaced my old late 2013 iMac that died recently due to the problem with its backlight. Thanks to the latest CPU, dedicated graphic card and 1TB fusion drive, this new iMac performs very well. Retina display gives me crispy sharp images and texts. Hope this new iMac won't die in 4 years this time. Very fast shipping and competitive price. That's what I always get from B&H. Thanks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wife's Christmas Present I bought this iMac as my wife's Christmas present. B&H had the best price and expedited delivery. Setup of Apple products is always easy and integrates with our other Apple products seamlessly. Only took a few minutes and notes, photos, contacts, email, etc was completed. Eat your heart out Microsoft, as your efforts are always clunky, cumbersome, and lacking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Computer I used an iMac at work some years ago and really liked it, but never owned one. I have become thoroughly disgusted with Windows PCs (I had an HP laptop, 17" screen, Windows 8.1) and IE. I am on my third iPhone and have loved them all, so I decided to switch to iMac. I thought about the MacBook, but my old HP laptop rarely ever left my desk, so I opted for the iMac with larger screen, etc. for a better price than the MacBooks. Compared to my old HP, It is so much faster and has the best screen, such sharp, crisp images and bright colors, and it's so intuitive as Apple products always seem to be. I love the cordless keyboard and mouse (no wires on my desk). I was initially concerned about not having Word and Excel, but the Apple versions work just fine. You can save documents in Word or Excel formats if you want to send them out to anyone. Setting it up is easy. Everything from my iCloud account from my iPhone loaded to the iMac, contacts, music, calendars, etc. I basically just had to load my data files. I don't think I will ever use anything other than Apple products again. You may pay a little more, but you get what you pay for. And B&H has the best prices with no tax and fast, free shipping.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blazing Speed! My previous Mac was a 2007 and I loved it. My son mention all the sales for the holidays and I should look into updating my computer... which I did and was totally shocked at the speed. The screen is so bright sun-glasses could be worn. The only non function was in transferring data from the 2007 which it did for but one thing. None of my bookmarks made it to my 2017.. Apple Care said it was simply to old! So glad I took my sons advice
