Apple iMac overview

  • 1Description

Apple weds high-res 5K visuals into its sleek, 5mm thin, mid 2017 27" iMac with Retina 5K Display. With a 5120 x 2880 screen resolution, this iMac provides 1 billion colors and 500 nits of brightness, which is 43% brighter than the previous model. The Retina 5K display also features a wider color gamut. Using a P3-based color gamut, the Retina 5K display provides a larger color space that more equally represents red, green, and blue, as compared to standard sRGB displays. And with more available colors, the images will appear more vivid and reveal greater detail, with more balance and precision.

The iMac's processor has been upgraded and now houses a 7th-gen Kaby Lake 3.8 GHz Intel Core i5 Quad-Core processor that can be overclocked up to 4.2 GHz, as well as 8GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 RAM. Visuals are powered by a dedicated AMD Radeon Pro 580 graphics card with 8GB of vRAM, and for storage, there is a 2TB Fusion Drive.

Outfitted with 802.11ac Wi-Fi and backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n for speedy hook-ups to your home network, this iMac is also configured with Bluetooth 4.2, as well as a UHS-II SDXC card slot, two 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports, four 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 Type-A ports, a Gigabit Ethernet jack, and a FaceTime HD camera. It also has a Kensington lock slot for added security.

Apple's 27" iMac with Retina 5K Display (Mid 2017) operates using 100-240 VAC at 50-60 Hz and includes an Apple Magic Keyboard, an Apple Magic Mouse 2, a Lightning to USB cable, and a power cord. The installed operating system is macOS High Sierra, and protection is provided by a limited 1-year warranty, which can be extended using AppleCare.

Please note that this Mac may come with an earlier version of macOS. You can upgrade to the latest version through the Mac App Store app.

General Features

27" Retina 5K IPS Display
Whether your iMac is in your studio, living room, or kitchen, the display is the focal point. With a 5120 x 2880 screen resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio, you'll be able to playback 5K content natively. The IPS panel allows for wider viewing angles so more people can enjoy the display without having to crowd around it. With a dedicated AMD Radeon Pro 580 graphics card and 8GB of vRAM, the iMac delivers visual effects and 3D graphics, as well as video editing capabilities that can tackle multicam projects in Final Cut Pro X with up to five streams of full-res 4K video, as well as the ability to edit 360° video and create 3D VR content.
7th-Gen Kaby Lake Quad-Core Intel Core Performance
The iMac houses a 7th-Gen Kaby Lake Intel Core i5 Quad-Core processor that can reach a stock speed of 3.8 GHz. It can also be overclocked up to 4.2 GHz, thanks to Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. The 7th-gen Kaby Lake Intel processor uses low voltage for better energy efficiency while still providing fast performance needed to run processor-intensive applications such as Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro. Combined with 8GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 RAM, the iMac allows you to multitask quickly and efficiently.
External Displays
The iMac simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and either one 5120 x 2880 (5K) external display at 60 Hz with support for 1 billion colors, two 3840 x 2160 (4K UHD) external displays at 60 Hz with support for 1 billion colors, or two 4096 x 2304 (4K) external displays at 60 Hz with support for millions of colors.
Thin Design
The iMac maintains its 5mm profile, which is up to 40% less volume than the 2011 iMac. Its display panel is 1.4mm thin.
802.11ac Wi-Fi & Bluetooth 4.2
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, you're instantly connected to all your favorite content. Bluetooth 4.2 wireless technology is also built in, so you can connect accessories such as a wireless keyboard and mouse.
Gigabit Ethernet
For a more reliable network connection, take advantage of wired Gigabit Ethernet technology.
Thunderbolt 3
Two Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports come standard on all iMac models, each delivering up data transfer speeds of up to 40 Gb/s external drives and cameras, plus twice the bandwidth for video and display connectivity. Thunderbolt 3 also supports 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 and DisplayPort 1.2. Thunderbolt 2, HDMI, DVI, and VGA output is also supported using adapters (sold separately).
USB 3.0
With USB 3.0, you can transfer large files in seconds instead of minutes. Every iMac comes with four 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 Type-A ports - with speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 - and you can connect all your USB-compatible devices, including your iPhone, iPad, iPod or digital camera.
Up to 64GB RAM
While the current 8GB memory configuration is made up of two 4GB modules, the memory can be upgraded to a maximum of 64GB, using a 16GB chip in each of the four 260-pin SO-DIMM sockets.
FaceTime HD Camera
A built-in FaceTime HD camera allows users to use apps such as FaceTime and Skype for video calls.

    Apple iMac reviews

27" iMac with Retina 5K Display (Mid 2017) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from First iMac, second Apple product Hi - I have built PC's since the 1980's. I still work on them extensively. I just switched to the iMac after my last home built PC failed. The high quality of the engineering of this machine just floors me. The quality of the display, the fast boot up time, the OS, ... well I'm amazed. My only concerns are that when I had problems with PC's, I could generally fix them on my own, This will not be possible with this machine so I am relying on its durability. The only other thing I would like to see is a back lit keyboard like on their laptops. Nonetheless, I feel I have a very solid computer that will run trouble free for many many years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Holy Cow!!! Second iMac. This computer is unbelievably fast, and there are no constant pinwheels, which require rebooting to fix. I purchased the 3.8 iMac with 2t HD and 8 gigs of ram. I was going to add ram but I don't think I need to. Photoshop and Bridge Creative Cloud work very well and start much faster than before. I am impressed, this is what my FIRST iMac should have been. The upgrade in computers was amazingly easy and quite quick, thanks to Apple's Migration App.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Is Amazing I just replaced my 2007 iMac with 24 screen with this beauty. When viewing photos on my old iMac, I thought that maybe I should sell all of my photo gear back to B&H. Well, to make a long story short, it wasn't the photos, it was the monitor. My photographs look amazing on the 5K display. Of course the new iMac is faster, etc, etc, but it's the monitor!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really quick editing computer with FCPX. Extremely fast editing computer with FCPX, very happy with Resolve performance but a little less impressive with Adobe. I feel like this is the model to get for video on a normal budget... the fusion drive opens apps instantly and all our media is on fast external RAIDS so no need for the more expensive SSD models. Solid improvement over the 3.4 i5/AMD 570 version but honestly with FCPX the lower end one is still plenty fast and if your budget is tight I would get the lower model and spend the difference on a fast storage solution like the OWC Thunderbay RAIDS. FYI With FCPX and Resolve I did not notice much (if any) speed improvement going from 8gig of RAM to 16... 4 out of 5 stars because it really should have another Thunderbolt port + 4k HDMI output....SD card slot, one Thunderbolt, and a USB really need to be on the side or bottom even if it means it has to be a few mm thicker. 5k is great but overkill on a 27 inch screen, would love to see a larger version at some point For the price I think this is hard to beat for photo and video work

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Fabulous ! This replaces my first Apple, a 2011, 27” iMac. As former PC user since day one, I’m continuously in awe by the brilliant video display and lightning performance that’s an Apple hallmark. The 5k video display is simply fabulous. Colors are so rich and vibrant, there’s almost a 3D quality to my photographs. Even at half the maximum brightness, the 500 nit display is gorgeous and light years ahead of the competition. I added 32 Gb of Crucial Memory (B&H#CR32KD4192SM) to the 8 gigs supplied and the iMac screams through photo and video editing. I opted for the slight upgrade to the 3.8 GHz i5 processor, which is more than adequate for my needs. The 2 Tb Fusion drive is solid and super quiet. Data migration from old to new was a snap using Migration Assistant with a Thunderbolt cable. B&H did their usual great job from order through delivery. I was a bit skeptical about shipping this beauty vs. purchasing at retail, but it was packed so securely it could have safely traveled around the world. No hesitation to buy something of this value and size from B&H. Try one, I doubt you’ll be disappointed. Another Mac convert.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for lite photo editing and everyday use! Awesome Displ Our first apple computer, purchased primarily for lite photo editing and daily use. For photo editing it is great the apple native "photos" lets you do some editing quickly which is what 95% of our photos need. Apple's photos, can read the Canon 7D RAW images making the iMac and awesome a quick tool to review and touch up our pics. For daily use, we use a variety of kids education and fun apps and its nice to have them link up with the iPad's purchased apps. We highly recommend this iMac for anyone that needs a good quality computer with midrange+ performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Performer I selected this computer from among four narrowed-down choices. My sales rep at B&H was Sherman, a well-informed individual who knew exactly what every aspect of this computer would do relative to my photographic needs. The machine works exceptionally fast (I self-loaded an additional 16GB of RAM to the computer. That was super easy as Sherman said it would be. I am exceptionally pleased with its performance, its quick-processing and with the expertise of my salesperson.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great price for a great computer The thing I like about Mac's is that they just WORK. No driver issues, no worrying about antivirus garbage, and no sudden unexplainable errors that just happen that require a techie guy/gal to come and fix. They JUST WORK :). This one is no exception. Powerful graphics (yes, I game on it), and a great processor with an AWESOME 5k display make this a bargain powerhouse computer for just about anyone.
