Apple iMac overview

  • 1Description

Apple weds high-res 5K visuals into its sleek, 5mm thin, mid 2017 27" iMac with Retina 5K Display. With a 5120 x 2880 screen resolution, this iMac provides 1 billion colors and 500 nits of brightness, which is 43% brighter than the previous model. The Retina 5K display also features a wider color gamut. Using a P3-based color gamut, the Retina 5K display provides a larger color space that more equally represents red, green, and blue, as compared to standard sRGB displays. And with more available colors, the images will appear more vivid and reveal greater detail, with more balance and precision.

The iMac's processor has been upgraded and now houses a 7th-gen Kaby Lake 4.2 GHz Intel Core i7 Quad-Core processor that can be overclocked up to 4.5 GHz, as well as 8GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 RAM. Visuals are powered by a dedicated AMD Radeon Pro 580 graphics card with 8GB of vRAM, and for storage, there is a 512GB SSD.

Outfitted with 802.11ac Wi-Fi and backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n for speedy hook-ups to your home network, this iMac is also configured with Bluetooth 4.2, as well as a UHS-II SDXC card slot, two 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports, four 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 Type-A ports, a Gigabit Ethernet jack, and a FaceTime HD camera. It also has a Kensington lock slot for added security.

Apple's 27" iMac with Retina 5K Display (Mid 2017) operates using 100-240 VAC at 50-60 Hz and includes an Apple Magic Keyboard, an Apple Magic Mouse 2, a Lightning to USB cable, and a power cord. The installed operating system is macOS High Sierra, and protection is provided by a limited 1-year warranty, which can be extended using AppleCare.

Please note that this Mac may come with an earlier version of macOS. You can upgrade to the latest version through the Mac App Store app.

General Features

27" Retina 5K IPS Display
Whether your iMac is in your studio, living room, or kitchen, the display is the focal point. With a 5120 x 2880 screen resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio, you'll be able to playback 5K content natively. The IPS panel allows for wider viewing angles so more people can enjoy the display without having to crowd around it. With a dedicated AMD Radeon Pro 580 graphics card and 8GB of vRAM, the iMac delivers visual effects and 3D graphics, as well as video editing capabilities that can tackle multicam projects in Final Cut Pro X with up to five streams of full-res 4K video, as well as the ability to edit 360° video and create 3D VR content.
7th-Gen Kaby Lake Quad-Core Intel Core Performance
The iMac houses a 7th-Gen Kaby Lake Intel Core i7 Quad-Core processor that can reach a stock speed of 4.2 GHz. It can also be overclocked up to 4.5 GHz, thanks to Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. The 7th-gen Kaby Lake Intel processor uses low voltage for better energy efficiency while still providing fast performance needed to run processor-intensive applications such as Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro. Combined with 8GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 RAM, the iMac allows you to multitask quickly and efficiently.
External Displays
The iMac simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and either one 5120 x 2880 (5K) external display at 60 Hz with support for 1 billion colors, two 3840 x 2160 (4K UHD) external displays at 60 Hz with support for 1 billion colors, or two 4096 x 2304 (4K) external displays at 60 Hz with support for millions of colors.
Thin Design
The iMac maintains its 5mm profile, which is up to 40% less volume than the 2011 iMac. Its display panel is 1.4mm thin.
802.11ac Wi-Fi & Bluetooth 4.2
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, you're instantly connected to all your favorite content. Bluetooth 4.2 wireless technology is also built in, so you can connect accessories such as a wireless keyboard and mouse.
Gigabit Ethernet
For a more reliable network connection, take advantage of wired Gigabit Ethernet technology.
Thunderbolt 3
Two Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports come standard on all iMac models, each delivering up data transfer speeds of up to 40 Gb/s external drives and cameras, plus twice the bandwidth for video and display connectivity. Thunderbolt 3 also supports 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 and DisplayPort 1.2. Thunderbolt 2, HDMI, DVI, and VGA output is also supported using adapters (sold separately).
USB 3.0
With USB 3.0, you can transfer large files in seconds instead of minutes. Every iMac comes with four 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 Type-A ports - with speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 - and you can connect all your USB-compatible devices, including your iPhone, iPad, iPod or digital camera.
Up to 64GB RAM
While the current 8GB memory configuration is made up of two 4GB modules, the memory can be upgraded to a maximum of 64GB, using a 16GB chip in each of the four 260-pin SO-DIMM sockets.
FaceTime HD Camera
A built-in FaceTime HD camera allows users to use apps such as FaceTime and Skype for video calls.

    Apple iMac reviews

27" iMac with Retina 5K Display (Mid 2017) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic! My first iMac but not my first apple product. I have to say that the computer is great. I use it for video editing and photo editing and I couldn’t be happier. One thing I would HIGHLY recommend is that if you were to buy one of these with 8GB of ram, wait for it to turn up and then order more RAM for it. Mine now has 24GB and has made it a lot faster and since the RAM has been upgraded it really opens up the iMac and allows it to breath. Overall I would highly recommend buying one of these if your looking for a long lasted iMac. Just upgrade the RAM to open up the performance possibilities.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great iMac for video and photo editing I upgraded from a MacBook Pro late 2013 model. I upgraded to a SSD and that helped stretch the life of it. However, the laptop showed it’s age whenever I tried any video editing in Final Cut Pro X. Lightroom and Photoshop performance were acceptable. I’m not a pro in the slightest. However, when I buy a Mac I buy more computer than I need since I can’t upgrade anything (besides the RAM). The iMac is awesome and I don’t miss the portability of the laptop. I have an old Cinema Display attached to it too. Having all the real estate to work with is worth loss of portability. It slices through FCP X, LR and PS. It’s a lot of money for this computer but it performs well. This is my third Mac since 2008 and they’ve all been rock solid.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great performance, noticeable fan noise. This is my first iMac. I had been hobbling along with a 2010 Mac Pro for 7 years prior. This isn't actually that much faster than that because I made a lot of upgrades including a GPU that great improved my video editing performance. But in all other regards this Mac just works unlike my old Mac which was prone to issues. The only complaint I have is that the fan spins up a little more than I expected while doing CPU/GPU intensive tasks which I often do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Pleased I was previously using a top of the line 2013 mbp to edit videos. I was tempted to wait for the iMac Pro, but decided that a lot more work could be done between now and whenever the iMac Pro would actually ship so I got this 2017 27 4.2ghz i7 iMac. I added 16GB of Ram myself. I am very happy with my purchase. I used to have to edit proxy files on my mbp to get work done, but in my experience this iMac chews through the full size files at the same rate or faster than my proxy files on my laptop. I was just working on a project that was shot in 4k on the a6500 and a7SII and then down sampled to 1080 w/ green screen and film grain applied. The final video was 20 minutes long. Towards the end of the project I tried to switch over to my laptop to do some edits on the road and it was just too slow. I tried to export the project h.264 from my laptop while I went on a break and I got back 2.5 hours later and it was only 56% completed. On the iMac it exported the project in 20-30 minutes. Its not just about export and render times though... it is the ability to play back and skim through clips with little to now stuttering even while things haven't been fully rendered out. Not to mention the screen size made things so much more manageable. If you are coming from a laptop and going to this machine you are going to be very thankful you did. If the iMac pro comes out and blows this machine out of the water I may consider putting it up for sale, but if the performance difference is negligible for FCP X then I will keep this computer at half the price. My only temptation or regret was that perhaps I should have invested in the 1tb ssd. I decided that if I do keep it that I would invest in a samsung T5 if I find I need more space. I also know that soon apple will probably change the form factor and get rid of the bezels, but thats ok. Great Monitor. Good speed. Good price. No tax w/ BH. I had a little trouble with UPS, but other than that I am VERY PLEASED.

    Rated 3 out of 5 by from buy if you need it It is fast machine but .... - no way to upgrade internal HDD and external thunderbolt 3 enclosure keep disconnecting; - I wish it would come without new Apple keyboard and mouse, new full size arrow keys mess up with my muscle memory so I keep stock of previous keyboards with half sized keys; - I use trackpad and mouse is useless for me, so those just apple tax;

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected I finally decided to get rid of my old PC that kept requiring repair every 6-12 months. This is so easy to set up and use it's ridiculous. Love the purchase and worth every penny! It's super fast and the display is incredible. Thanks B&H for having the best price on the net!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quite a bit faster than my 2014 MacBook Pro So far no complaints other than the default keyboard is a bit light and cheesy. But I already had a nice mechanical which I prefer over Apple's default wireless keyboards. But the speed of the machine and the screen quality are both really nice.
