SLR Magic 35mm 1.33x Anamorphot-CINE Lens (PL Mount)

Building upon their experience with anamorphic adapters, SLR Magic produced this 35mm 1.33x Anamorphot-CINE Lens that delivers a complete, one piece, anamorphic lens with a maximum aperture of T2.4. The lens provides a 2.35:1 aspect ratio to your image when used with your 16:9 sensor. Suitable for use with cameras with a S35 sensor, the anamorphic lens allows you record an image with a wider aspect ratio than your sensor's native aspect ratio without cropping your image, which maximizes the resolution of your image.

The lens incorporates a mask that exaggerates the anamorphic lens flare effect to simulate the look of a 2x anamorphic element. The lens features a 3.5' minimum focus distance and has geared focus and iris rings. It is worth pointing out that the front of the lens rotates as you focus, which may affect your choice of matte box. The 82mm front filter thread allows you to screw in filters, such as diopters to shorten the 3.5' minimum focus distance.

This 35mm lens produces a 2.35:1 aspect ratio on 16:9 sensors. This allows you to get a greater widescreen effect while maximizing your sensors resolution.
The internal mask produces an anamorphic effect on flares closer to a 2x anamorphic without affecting the 1.33x optical anamorphic effect.
Geared focus and iris rings allow use follow focus units or lens motors to pull your focus or iris.
SLR Magic PL to EF-Mount Adapter

Use the PL to EF-Mount Adapter from SLR Magic to mount PL lenses on your EF-Mount–DSLR or camcorder. This adapter enables you to expand your lens choices to include cine-style PL-mount lenses, whether vintage or new. Made from aluminum and titanium, the PL to EF-Mount Adapter features a positive-lock ring.

Works well but not intuitive

The lens has amazing flares and works well after using the in-body anamorphic de-squeeze on my blackmagic 6k EF. As known from reading reviews online, the lens does have a lot of distortion on the edges and is soft when used with larger aperture settings. Even then, it's not as sharp/clean looking as a regular budget priced 35mm (such as the sigma ART). However, you buy this lens for the anamorphic look and it is by far cheaper than the next-cheapest option; in that sense, it delivers. The PL to EF adapter unit is surprisingly not intuitive in how it attaches. There were no instructions anywhere in the box or online, and it actually took me a long time to figure out which part of the adapter unscrews (and in which direction) in order to attach it to the lens. It sort of rotates within itself in a way that was unexpected. You also have to remove the ring from the back of the lens itself which also wasn't indicated. It sounds silly but as someone with a PhD in engineering, unable to figure it out for at least an hour or two with lots of struggling and even using grips and a lot of strength trying to attach the wrong way, I feel like they should have at least provided some basic diagram showing a quick overview of needing to remove the ring from the back of the lens and how to twist the adapter. If you attach it to your camera tightly and then forget which way it unscrews, you will struggle to also remove it, because it's tight either way and you don't know whether it's going the right direction and you have to twist harder, vs. going the wrong way and continue tightening it. The adapter is well-built though and allows use of the PL mount anamorphic lens with my blackmagic 6k in EF mount. I do think the added price for the adapter is pretty high; you can get an okay lens for the price of the adapter, but then again, buying this plus the anamorphot lens together is still a lot cheaper than any other anamorphic for EF mount.
