Canon Rebel SL2 overview

  • 1Description

With a compact and lightweight body, the black Canon EOS Rebel SL2 DSLR Camera provides users with a fully-featured system that won't weigh them down. Packed into the tiny body is a capable 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and a DIGIC 7 Image Processor, both of which work together to create sharp, vivid images at native sensitivities up to ISO 25600 and extended sensitivities up to ISO 51200. Video shooting has received a boost with Full HD 1080p recording possible at up to 60 fps. The SL2 also manages some significant body upgrades, with the main addition being a 3.0" vari-angle touchscreen LCD for intuitive operation and the ability to work at odd angles with relative ease.

As a DSLR, the SL2 obviously retains the optical viewfinder for fast, natural composition of your images and it can shoot continuously at speeds up to 5 fps. This setup also features a 9-point AF system for capturing tack sharp images. If you are working in Live View or shooting video, the SL2 does offer Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, providing fast, accurate focusing in these modes and with intuitive control via the touchscreen. Additionally, the SL2 has a microphone input for higher quality audio recording during movie shooting.

For those inclined to share their journeys, the SL2 features built-in Wi-Fi with NFC and Bluetooth, making connecting to a smart device fast and simple. This setup permits wireless control over camera settings as well as the ability to transfer files to your phone. The SL2 also offers a Feature Assistant to help new shooters learn how to use the camera and its functions.

Included with the camera is the EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens, a compact mid-range zoom with an equivalent range of 28.8-88mm. The lens is designed to be small, a perfect match for the SL2, and incorporates both image stabilization and STM autofocus for ensuring your photos and videos are of the highest quality.

24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 7 Image Processor
Both a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 7 image processor are used to deliver high sensitivity and fast camera performance to suit both stills and video applications. A flexible native ISO 100-25600 range, which can be extended to ISO 51200, suits working in a variety of lighting conditions, and the processing capabilities minimize noise for notable clarity. The processor also contributes to a fast 6 fps continuous shooting rate for photographing fast-moving subjects.
9-Point AF System and Dual Pixel CMOS AF
Benefitting stills shooting with the optical viewfinder, a 9-point phase-detection autofocus system provides quick and precise focusing in difficult lighting conditions. The center point is also a cross-type for enhanced accuracy and speed. When recording video, or shooting in live view, a Dual Pixel CMOS AF system is employed that offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. This system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery.
Full HD 1080p Video Recording
In addition to stills recording, the SL2 also supports Full HD 1080p video recording at up to 60 fps in the MP4 format. Video recording is benefitted by the inclusion of Dual Pixel CMOS AF and the Movie Servo AF focusing functions, as well as the touchscreen design of the LCD monitor for intuitive control. Additionally, an external microphone jack is incorporated in the body design for greater control over your recorded sound.
Body Design and Other Features
  • Large 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD provides an intuitive method for controlling focusing points, navigating menus, and reviewing imagery. This screen also features a vari-angle design to better enable working from high and low angles.
  • Optical pentamirror viewfinder serves a clear means for eye-level shooting.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows for easy wireless sharing of both photos and movies to a linked mobile device.
  • Bluetooth permits linking a smartphone or tablet for quick image sharing between devices as well as remote control capabilities.
  • Included LP-E17 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 820 shots per charge.
  • A Feature Assistant user interface is available to highlight and guide use of specific camera modes and features.

Canon Rebel SL2 reviews

EOS Rebel SL2 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good buy. I have been a Canon owner for 29 years. I believe the SL2 is a good buy. It has essentially the same 24MP processing system as the 77D, the 80D and my own 7DII.and M5. I just made a 13x19 print taken on a sunny day that has color and sharpness that matches any that I have printed. The 95 per cent view finder is adequate/ Canon has infused a lot of beginner assists so that one does not have to know a lot to begin taking pictures with it..Howeve, it allows an experienced photographer to nuance photos. In comparison with the M5 I own, I think the SL2 is more friendly in my hands. That's probably because it is more familiar in operation to my other Canon gear. I am tired of carrying big heavy cameras. The SL2 and M5 allow me some relief. .

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Perfect starter camera! This camera was one of the best purchases I have made. The camera itself is probably the best out there to start with. The touch screen is great and its swiveling hinge is an extra bonus. The EF-compatible mount lets you invest in full frame lenses possibly for your next camera. The only problem I have is with the included lens. Its focus ring has a very rough and strange feel to it. I don't believe this is just mine either, I looked it up and found many other people reporting the same problem. It wasn't too much of a deal for me though because I typically just use the autofocus, which makes up for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent I use this as a casual walk around camera to compliment my full frame pro system. The SL2 is an excellent update. Everything is better. I love the new recessed mode dial on the top. I'm using this camera body with an EF-S 55-250 STM and an EF 28 f/2.8 IS. Exceptional clean image quality at 11 MP (M medium resolution). The pixel density at 11 MP is perfect on APS-C. Especially for hand held use. I couldn't be happier with this camera. I suspect Canon will do very well with this new model.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All the Camera Most People "Need" I had three SL-1 bodies, the earliest (introduction month) of which developed some shutter issues in old age (123,000 shutter count). I run a business based on imaging to sell stuff. When the SL-2 was announced I got one of the first released. The Digic 7 processor and the higher buffer and write speeds are great. It is much better for moving objects, but not as good as the D7 Mark II with dual Digic 7's I also have in the office, but its smaller and far lighter. The SL-2 pivoting screen (at last) means I can get rid of my 90 degree finder for flowers. The Low light sharpness on the SL-2 is much improved in our bread and butter process equipment factory pictures. I don't know how many SL-1 bodies Canon sold, but I predict a greater number of SL-2 will be sold. The need to get a new remote release is a small thing. BTW, I don't use the wireless stuff, a solid corded connection can't be beat. Canon hits solid base hits and doesn't swing for the fences. They are losing the mirrorless war so far. But, they are bullet-proof in their home turf. Sony look out. The SL-2 is a must have in my opinion and has no competition. Oh, did I mention the SL-2 body still fits into a sport jacket pocket?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent YouTube Creator DSLR! I bought this camera for my YouTube videos on my YouTube Channel. I got a recommendation from Sean Cannell with Think Media on YouTube. He said it was an excellent YouTube and VLOG camera, and I have to agree wholeheartedly! And, it is a great straight photography camera as well! I have been a photographer for over 40 years, and it works perfectly for my needs!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this so much!!!!! I was going to buy this at its website (canon). It was $650 with $50 discount. Then, my brother in law introduced me to this website. B&H not only discounted same exact amount as their website but also added memory card and a bag, which I had to buy seperately!! There was no tax and shipping fee as well. At a canon’s website, the tax came out to be around $50-60 so had to pay around $700. I added a MC UV filter and all of them came out to be $665! What a deal :) The shipping came as their suggested time and the product is super! I checked outer parts + pixels, no problem at all (I was somewhat anxious that they will be sending me demaged or used product because their deals are that good!) I highly recommend this dslr and also this website! Will use it again to buy my computer?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent DSLR at a Bargain Price I own two other, more expensive cameras for studio work, and one for travel. But the traveling camera lacks a mic input and fully articulating screen. The SL2 has them. Based on landscape photographer Thomas Heaton’s Review, I evaluated the camera, then purchased it from Dodd Camera. The fast and accurate autofocus outperforms any other camera I have ever experienced! The grip, balance and location/operation of controls convinced me immediately! Finally, the JPEG color quality and sharpness is amazing. I take it with me everywhere. I am now exploring other Canon cameras and lenses to purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent camera in a tiny package I bought SL2 as a backup for my Canon 6D. The JPEG colors produced by this camera are exceptionally good. The camera is very easy to use even for a newbie. 9-point AF system is simple and sufficient for most families shooting pictures of their family events. DPAF provides excellent control for shooting video and taking pictures in Live View. Live View is so easy that one wouldn't find the 9-point AF as a limiting factor anymore. A note for vloggers: this is the cheapest DPAF-enabled camera with external mic input, as of today in the market. Electronic Image Stabilization that was introduced in T7i is missing in SL2; however, it was missing from the much costlier vlogger-favorite 80D too. Honestly, I am picking up my SL2 more often than my 6D for shorter trips and that's definitely because of the size & weight factor. I would definitely recommend this camera, especially for it being so light weight, ease of use, great Canon colors and excellent video auto-focus.
