Vanguard ALTA GH-300T overview

  • 1Description

The ALTA GH-300T Pistol Grip Ball Head from Vanguard is designed for action photography. By squeezing the ergonomic handle, it releases the hold on the ball, and you can position your camera angle. Once you release the handle it automatically locks into place.

The magnesium ball head features two panning axes, which are located at the base of the head and the other just under the quick release plate. The panning base, with its separate panning lock, rotates a full 360°, and moves freely to follow a fast-paced subject. The second base has 72-click points with 5° intervals, which allows a camera to create panoramic photographs. Moreover, the ball has a lateral tilt of -32 to 90° and a frontal tilt of -8 to 90°.

The pistol grip itself can also rotate 360° vertically to 8 pre-set positions. Of course, this is to make the position of the grip comfortable during shooting, and with a load capacity of 17.6 lb and its tension control you can rest assured that the camera will not creep or move anywhere. Additionally, the Arca-type head is compatible with most Arca-type plates on the market, and a safety pin located inside the clamp prevents the plate from accidentally falling out if the clamp was partially open. Included with the head are two universal 2.5mm DC jack cables, which are the TC1 and the TN1 for select Canon and Nikon cameras.

    Vanguard ALTA GH-300T reviews

ALTA GH-300T Pistol Grip Ball Head is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Maneuverable and Innovative Ball Head This pistol grip ball head has a lot of versatile and innovative adjustment features. It grips firmly when locked, (though the rubber friction pad did come off the first day, and I had to glue it back on). Still, it has a very ergonomic design and is comfortable to hold. My only criticism would be that the quick release safety stops can't be disengaged. This limit's the use of other arca-swiss style QR plates. My solution was to permanently attach a macro focusing rail to the included plate. For my purposes for this particular tripod, that enhances it's usefulness in macro flower photography anyway, and bypasses the QR plate interface.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Helps with heavy lens I found that I always had the wrong tension with my ball joint head when using a heavy lens (e.g., Tamron 150-600). Either too sticky to smoothly pan or too loose with sudden drooping of camera. The Vanguard pistol grip is either fully mobile for aiming or locked in position with a simple flip of a thumb lever. The camera attachment for the pistol grip exposure trigger was easily accomplished with included cable (to Canon EOS 5D Mk IV) and gave the two-stage focus-shoot as smoothly as the camera's own button. Minus the 5th star: the "Arca-compatible" clamp is narrower than other Arca-type mounting clamps. It takes extra effort to squeeze Arca-type camera mounting plates into the clamp when fully open. The supplied plate locked into the Vanguard clamp but was too narrow to get firmly locked into other Arca-type clamps. So maybe Arca-lite.
