MXL AC-404 Overview

The white MXL AC-404 is a USB boundary microphone with a low-profile, desktop design and a durable metal construction. Three built-in mic capsules provide a wide 180° pickup pattern and capture sound within a 25' radius.

Multiple participants can be heard clearly, enabling natural conversations for productive group meetings conducted over the internet using the platform or service of your choice (Teams, Zoom, and more).

The AC-404's 3.5mm connector can be used as a headphone jack to monitor or record your calls. The included USB cable provides plug-and-play connectivity to Mac/Windows computers.

So far this seems to be a good product. I have little experience with USB mics but this one seems to work well.

We are using this mic to zoom from a group meeting. It picks up voices from the back of our 30 foot room if we place it 10 feet from the opposite wall. If it had a longer cord we could center it in a larger room

I put this on the podium to record audio for a presentation to put over video of the slides. After setting input levels, it worked great. Worked with USB extension cord as well.

We have been buying and using these for several years now, installing them in classrooms for lecture capture recordings. They work well, BUT as they are plug and play, a PC also thinks that the device is a speaker (the built-in headphone output). You will need to disable the playback choice on a PC.

We use this mic for video conferencing in the classroom. Have had no issues with remote guests hearing. My only concern is the mini USB connector. So far, no problems, but a full-sized USB would make me more confident.

Yes! The AC-404 works well with iPads. In order to connect to the actual lighting connector you will need a lightning to USB A adapter.

Can you use a longer cable than 6 foot? How long of a cable can be used before mic will not work?

Not sure how long you have to go to break it, but I've used it with a 30' usb extension cable. Must use the correct kind of cable though. I believe they're called 'active' or 'repeater' cables.

You can take audio out from the headphone output, but it is line level. Also, this mic must be connected to a computer for power and to control the volume level to the headphone out.

What is the difference between MXL AC-404 and the MXL AC-404Z?

The mics themselves are identical. The Z is meant to be part of a Zoom conferencing system. The Z ships with mounting tape, a right angle USB cable and also sports a blue LED to match the Zoom color. The non Z does not sport an LED light. If you have a Zoom system, consider the Z version, otherwise the non Z is fine.

Can I power the mic thru the USB port with a portable battery pack?

This mic is designed to send audio via USB connection, as well as power back to the mic. Theoretically, since it is bus powered, you could use an external battery to power the mic through the USB, but you would not have control over the headphone audio line level output. This is all done on the computer.

I am interested in microphones like this one, but I am interested in chaining up to 4 of them together. Can you recommend an alternative product?

I suggest looking into software to submix. We use a platform called voicemeeter. The other option would be using a USB audio interface with 4 preamps and connect the MXL FR401M. The 401M is essentially a XLR version of the 404. From there you can connect that interface to whatever platform you are using.
