Excellent value; well made

I'm really impressed with this kit, which allows me to build a nearly 10ft dolly track that still fits easily in the back of the hatchback. I will caution that it doesn't work well out of the box with the Kessler shuttle dolly. Something about the wheel compound perhaps, but the rail seams result in a footage-visible bump. Mike with Dana Dolly was awesome to communicate with and was upfront that while the Dana Dolly had no such issues with the seams, he'd had other Kessler users have the same issue I found. I was able to resolve my issues with some fine-grit sanding of the seam edges, and I'm really happy with the kit now. If you're using the Kessler shuttle dolly and money isn't a factor, consider paying more (a lot more) for the equivalent Kessler Kwik Rail kit. It'll probably work better out of the box.

Threaded joints are not smooth

Overall this should be a great solution. Am using these rods with a Kessler shuttle dolly. However, the lip between the rods when threaded together is quite noticeable and the bump when moving the dolly across the joints can easily be seen in my test footage. I'm going to check with the manufacturer and see what they suggest. If I come with a solution, I may update this review.

These pictures do not do this kit justice. These things are massively built and solid. Definitely worth the price.

expensive but worth it

As someone who travels a lot for work, these portable rails are totally worth the price because you have everything you need in one place and you don't have to worry about sourcing speed rail at your location.

How long is each pipe? What is the total maximum length of the assembled track?
Asked by: Terry
This kit comes with six 39" lengths of schedule 80 aluminum pipe. That would give you 117 inches for each side of the dolly track, which is just a bit under 10 feet of length.

Does this tubing kit work with the Dana Dolly ...

Does this tubing kit work with the Dana Dolly Universal System? My question is because in the specifications of this kit of tubes it says that it has a diameter of 1.25 "/ 3.17 cm and for the Dana Dolly Universal System to work they recommend tubes of Outside Diameter: 1.5 to 1.9 "(3.8 to 4.8 cm). Can someone explain to me if they have used it and if it is correct what I explain? I would not like to buy it and that it is not tight and loose.

Dana Dolly make two types of track ends, the “Original” which only works with 1.25” speedrail (pipe has an O.D. of 1.66”, I don’t know where they get the 1.25” BTW) and the “Universal” which works with any size pipe from 1.25” to 1.5” (again, the pipe size does not correlate to the actual size of the pipe for some reason). The pipe kit is made from schedule 80 aluminum pipe that is 1.25” (the 1.66” O.D.) and it works with both track ends. It is a little confusing because of the fact that the actual measurements don’t correlate with what the pipe is named, but we’ve found on the West Coast people generally use the 1.25” speedrail or aluminum pipe for grip trucks, and on the East Coast the 1.5” pipe is the most common size. The Universal track ends are also the ones anyone outside of the USA will want to use. Hard to find the proper size in say, Romania.

question

Are the threads etched on to the outside of the pipe or does this come with threaded connectors?
Asked by: Christian
the pipes have a thread cut inside, then they machined nipples with 2 male threads on them to join the tubes. you keep the nipple mounted on one side, and there is a protective rubber cap for when not in use.they are awesome for when you need to be moving around location, rather than dragging long pipe around.the threads are a little fine, be careful getting them started so you don't strip them.

question

How many lengths can be used with out a middle support?
Asked by: Christian
You can get away with using 3 lengths depending on the weight of the camera. When we use our red helium in light weight mode with a small lens and no accessories it's very usable.Fully kitted up with a cinema lens matte box wireless units etc, it definitely needs a centre support, sometimes even for two lengths. One tip definitely buy the newer quick release ends. The originals have scratched up the track big time.
