Gitzo GSF38S Reviews

Perfect if the length work for you

The spikes are made from stainless steel, and the quality is top notch, as is expected from so expensive accessories, and are very easy to clean after use. These short spikes weights only 10g each, have hollow stem, and have longer threads than long Gitzo spikes or RRS ones. They also have round hole in its stem to simplify screwing/unscrewing, but of smaller diameter than RRS. They work fine in soft ground, but are not as good on grass (they are just too short and may pop up from soil if the load is small, the grass is very dense and the soil is soft). The rubber feet are interchangeable between all Gitzo spikes, short and long. Rubber feet sit tight, and will not fall off. I would use 30mm feet with Traveler, and 38mm - with Systematic. It would be nice if these short spikes were supplied with at least one spacer - the spacers provided with long spikes fit them nicely (but their main idea is to reduce weight as much as possible I guess). I uploaded images of the spike, including those where it is mounted on Gitzo GM4552L monopod.

important addition to a Gitzo carbon fiber tripod

This should prove very useful to have when shooting landscapes in terrain needing a wider footplate and/or secured with a spike. Haven't yet flown with it in my checked luggage, but I suspect their image on x-ray will lead to hands-on inspection before being placed in the luggage compartment. I plan on placing them in a transparent bag to facilitate any security searches.

What size do I need for my Gitzo GIGT2545T Traveler Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripod?
Asked by: John
I’m not 100% sure without double checking, but off the top of my head I recall that they’re all standard size threads (uniform and sized the same) for the majority of replacement feet. I did purchase them for my Gitzo Systemic Series (they were properly threaded) and decided to return them and replace them with Really Right Stuff rock claws, which seem to have a bit more surface area (similar to a snowshoe), to prevent digging in -and now I see that there are quite a few other companies that are making similar products that don’t cost $33 apiece. The one caveat: this type of foot has very sharp edges and will cut through your tripod bag if you do not remove them before travel. This may be a consideration since the small Gitzo feet come with protective rubber covers that can be used when the ground is dry. [TA-3-FRC Pod Foot Rock Claw]

Unfortunately, the GT1545T cannot accept these feet, as the replacement feet use a 1/4-20" thread.

The spikes fits 3/8"-16 threaded, but the spike hole on Gitzo 1545T is 1/4"-20 so it won't fit.
