Losmandy GM811GHD Overview

Ideal for long-exposure astrophotography and imaging, Losmandy's GM811G Equatorial GoTo Mount provides users with a highly portable platform built to support and move optical tube assemblies (OTAs) and gear with precision. With a total payload capacity of 50 pounds, excluding counterweights, the mount can precisely track the more than 40,000 objects in its database for extended periods of time with little vibration.

All hardware is made of stainless steel to handle the weight as well as resist wear over years of use, while a dual dovetail saddle will accept the common Vixen-style plates and the larger Losmandy D-style plates. Its dual-axis DC servo motors are smoother and more precise than the more common stepper-type motors and are reversible for use in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This version of the GM811G comes with a heavy-duty adjustable-height tripod that is made of machined aluminum with a black anodized finish that matches the mount head. It has a height range from 33 to 52 inches, and weighs a hefty 35 pounds for stability and superior vibration reduction.

The brain of the G11GT system is Losmandy's Gemini 2 computer hand controller. Equipped with a 40,000+ object database and updatable via the Internet, it sports a full-color display, an intuitive user interface, and an Ethernet 10/100 port for remote PC control. It features Periodic Error Correction (PEC) and declination-axis backlash correction to improve tracking accuracy and precision, with smooth tracking over long periods of time. Alignment assistance is available by selecting at least two bright stars, with the option of aligning to more stars for improved GoTo and tracking accuracy as desired. Multiple guide, slew, and tracking rates allow it to be easily aligned and manually controlled and to accurately track near- and deep-sky objects. A non-volatile memory and real-time clock preserve settings, including backlash correction and PEC, when the system is turned off and power disconnected.

Losmandy GM811GHD Reviews

Solid, well-made

Not much to say - the mount and the HD tripod that I bought with it are very solid and well-made. When set up, it's vibration-free and very suitable for viewing the sky with larger telescopes, along with astrophotography (which I'm just starting to dabble with) which requires very precise tracking. My larger telescope weighs between 23 and 26 pounds depending on what apparatus I have attached - this mount easily handles that. Losmandy is quite conservative in their capacity ratings, unlike some companies.
