Canon 85mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

Distinguished by its fast design and IS capabilities, the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM from Canon is a short telephoto prime well-suited to portraiture applications. As an L-series lens, it is characterized by a sophisticated optical layout that includes one glass-molded aspherical element to greatly reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and clarity. Individual elements also feature an Air Sphere coating (ASC) to suppress lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity in backlit situations.

Complementing the optical attributes, this lens also incorporates a four stop-effective optical image stabilization system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) also affords quick and accurate autofocus performance, along with full-time manual focus override for fine-tuned control. Additionally, as with all L-series lenses, this 85mm f/1.4 has a dust- and weather-resistant construction, as well as a fluorine coating on exposed elements, to benefit its use in harsh environmental conditions.

Portrait-length prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 136mm equivalent focal length.
Notably fast f/1.4 maximum aperture offers extensive control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques. This bright design also benefits working in low-light conditions.
One glass-molded aspherical element helps to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness and clarity.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Optical image stabilization minimizes the effects of camera shake by compensating for up to four stops of shutter speed.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Fluorine-coating on exposed elements affords protection to the optical system, resists smudging and fingerprints, and is easier to clean.

Canon 85mm f/1.4 reviews

EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 40.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome lens! I received mine yesterday after preordering more than a month ago. I was worried that it might be too heavy at 2 pounds but the balance is perfect. Shot a few pix last night in a very dark club and am very pleased with the results. Having used and loved the f1.8 model for many years this is a great upgrade just to have the IS if nothing else. Looking forward to using it on my 7D body and having a 135mm f1.4 IS lens! It seems to be really well built with a huge chunk of a front element. The included lens hood is perfect. Not too long at about 1.5 inches. The hood for the 1.8 is longer and I rarely use it. Loving it so far. This one is surely a keeper!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A portrait lens that excels at basketball (yes, really) I bought this lens for natural light portraits (some people, some dogs) AND because I've been shooting a lot of basketball at the local high school. In other words, shooting in not great light! I've been using my 5Diii with my EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM and have had success keeping ISO below 10K. I wondered if the new 1.4 would have fast enough IS to work in that fast-paced setting. Also, how the depth of field would work out at 1.4 versus 2.8. The proof is in the images. Tack sharp. Fast IS (seems to be as fast as the 70-200). Nicer bokeh (less DOF). And 85mm is perfect for portraits. It's a winner!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Greatest! CANON EF 85mm f/1.4 IS USM Lens The CANON 85mm f/1.4 IS USM is a very good lens. The autofocus is very fast and accurate. This lens features image stabilization, which is nice to have. I also own a ZEISS Milvus 85mm f/1.4 lens which provides fantastic color and sharpness. However, this is a manual focus lens. I missed the autofocus feature, so when the CANON came out with this model I decided to buy one. I'm glad I did. The CANON Lens is compact, easy to handle, and is smaller than the ZEISS Milvus 85mm, which makes it easier to carry around. Don't hesitate to buy this lens. You will really like it a lot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Traded in my beloved 1.2 I primarily do portrait and wedding work. What I was looking for was faster focus, image stabilization and better chromatic aberration control. I got it in this lens. I lost a little bit of bokeh (not much!) and 1/3 stop of light but the benefits far out weigh what I gave up. I’ve shot about 2-3000 photos with this already. The 1.2 is a magical lens when it hits but you will get way more keepers with this lens. My 1.2 was terrible with CA control. Even with post processing, I’d have a difficult time controlling it without losing my colors in backlit scenarios. From the business side of things, getting more keepers alone makes this a no brainer decision. After all, it’s about deliverable images to our clients. It’s a much easier lens to use in a busy work flow and the difference in the “magic” is negligible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from f/1.4 Excellence I traded my 85mm f/1.2 for this lens. It was a good decision. The 1.2 was always slow, lacked IS and had compromised quality in my view at 1.2 ~1.4. The new 85mm f/1.4 exhibits none of those problems. For faster paced senior shooting it is fabulous, especially with the IS. I can hand hold it down to 1/10th of a second and get sharp results which I could never do with the 1.2. If you use a tripod and shoot a lot of fairly stationary subjects the 1.2 does have more light gathering capabilities and is a good choice for that. The 85mm f/1.4 is in my experience a far better choice for a broader range of photographic possibilities. A pix of my Doberman at about 1 meter showing that you can get nose to eyes sharpness at that distance at 1.4. Bokeh is really good. Do note plane of sharpness since I was higher than the dog.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent addition to my Canon lenses arsenal I have the 85mm 1.8 which I very much like. I have used the 85 1.2 which I loved but found difficult t use in "live" situations. When Canon announced the 1.4, I patiently waited and read everything that had been published about it: reviews, a couple of comparisons (Sigma Art, etc.). Well, I finally received my copy about 10 days ago and I really like it. The focusing is fast, the color accurate. Some reviewers believe the Sigma Art is sharper, has less CA, etc. The fact is that I find the differences negligible even at close inspection. The decisive addition of the IS makes this Canon the leader of the pack. This lens focuses quickly even with limited lighting. I am astounded by how quickly and sharply this lens responds. Great lens, great addition. It will displace my 135 1.2 and even the 70-200mm 2.8 in many situations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect portrait lens I've put this lens on my 5D-IV when I received it, and have yet to take it off. My main subjects are people and this lens is fantastic. Bokeh is creamy, fall-off is great, and the IS is a killer for me (shaky hands). Servo mode is not good: after initial lock, it starts to hunt, leaving only ~80% in-focus. However, one-shot mode is fine even for little kids running around as the first move to focus is fast enough for that purpose and spot-on, so this does not limit me. The CA that I was dreading only shows up when focusing closely, at which point it is as bad as several reviewers have pointed out, but I don't use it for close-ups. Size is similar to the 24-105, albeit it with more girth on the mount side. Balances great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The 85mm Lens I've Been Dreamin of! Finally, an image-stabilized, weather-sealed 85mm! Fast and accurate focusing (much faster than the 1.2), sharp images, dreamy bokeh with that 3-D pop, and simply more versatility than the 1.2 makes this a winner. This does show a moderate amount of vignette at 1.4, but it's very gradual, and clears up by 2.8. Almost as fat, but longer than the 1.2, it is balanced better. This is the 85mm I've been dreaming of, and now it's mine!
